Perry credits the prayers
of friends, family and
neighbors with his contin-
ued recovery.
“So many people have
reached out to us and
have done things that
have been unbelievable,”
he said. “Everybody has
been so wonderful.”
The fight still isn’t over,
however. Perry started
six weeks of radiation on
Tuesday.
“They tell me that I’m
disease free and cancer
free at the moment,” Per-
ry said. “I’m just trusting
that God will heal me com-
pletely and keep that can-
cer away.
The road ahead will not
be easy.
“I’ll take eight chemo
pills a day, and that will
work alongside the radia-
tion,” Perry said. “I’m go-
ing to battle as hard as I
can.”
As for now, Perry’s at-
tention is on the gridiron,
where the jackets have
a shot at another state
championship.
“Being back on the foot-
ball field is the greatest
medicine there is,” Perry
said. “I’m like everybody
else—I don’t want it to
end. I want to keep this
thing going for a few more
weeks.”
Perry said this team has
what it takes to win it all.
“Fans have no idea what
goes into winning it all,”
Perry said. “I’m talking
about the year-round
work, the ball bouncing
your way here or there,
getting a call here or there,
and most importantly,
keeping guys healthy.
Winning a championship
takes a lot, but our kids
and their attitudes—this
is probably one of the
greatest groups I’ve been
around.
“I’ve been coaching for
a long time and I’ve been
blessed to coach many
good teams at Greer High.
I’ve been a part of a couple
of state championships
and won one. I’ve got a
feeling for what it takes to
do it, and this team is spe-
cial. This team is capable
of it.”

stead of the signatures.
“We’re looking at modi-
fying the password regula-
tions that we have,” Ridg-
ill said. “We’ve upgraded
our network switches
citywide. We’ve done the
phishing training. One
rule of thumb that I tell ev-
eryone is that if you have
a question or any piece of
doubt in your mind if this
is legit or not, it can’t be
legit.”
The city has also been
doing the KnowBe4 train-
ing.
“We have to be very care-
ful about what we down-
load, what we click on,
what’s coming in,” he said.
“When in doubt, delete it.”
“There’s more training
that’s coming,” Ridgill
said. “The more layers you
put in there, the better.”
Rigdill said cyber de-
fense has changed through
the years.
“There’s a lot of efforts
going on right now to de-
fend against a lot of the
attacks that are happening
in the world of comput-
ers,” Ridgill said. “It is no
longer just an adult hack-
er; it’s now children. Ten
years old and older can
now create these viruses,
programs that can get into
your system and create all
kinds of havoc.”
Viruses also ontinue to
grow more complex.
“Gone are those fun
days of the early viruses,
such as the cookie virus
that would pop up on your
screen and ask for a cook-
ie,” Ridgill said. “You had
to select finally the one it
wanted; then, it would dis-
appear, and you continue
right on. Nothing else hap-
pened.
“Nowadays, of course,
as we know, you can lose
all computer information;
things get completely de-
leted; it gets encrypted,”
he said. “You may get ran-
somware, where it asks for
any denomination of mon-
ey to get a key that might
work and it might not
work. You might get a key;
you might not get a key.
It’s really progressed into
a really ugly scenario.”
CYBER ATTACK METHODS
Phishing: the fraudulent practice of sending
emails purporting to be from reputable com-
panies in order to induce individuals to reveal
personal information, such as passwords and
credit card numbers
Spear phishing: the fraudulent practice of
sending emails ostensibly from a known or
trusted sender in order to induce targeted
individuals to reveal confidential information
Vishing: the act of using the telephone in an
attempt to scam the user into surrendering pri-
vate information that will be used for identity
theft
Smishing: the act of using text messages in an
attempt to scam the user into surrendering pri-
vate information that will be used for identity

ow, I know what Tannerite is.
But to be honest, for years I didn’t.
Residents in my neighborhood enjoy
target shooting, particularly around deer
season, and even the horses have be-
come accustomed to what often sounds
like rapid, semi automatic discharges
(should you want to blow the deer into
‘fun size’ bites) to the point where they
barely flinch.
That’s particularly helpful should one
actually be on a horse.
Then, suddenly, came enormous
booms that rattled windows, not to men-
tion nerves.
“What the hell was that?” I asked at the
feed store after Paul assured me it was a
cannon. “It sounded like a bazooka!”
“Tannerite,” replied the cashier, chew-
ing gum, “They use it when they shoot
stuff.”
Only she didn’t say, “stuff.”
“To blow stuff up?” I asked, but I
didn’t say “stuff.”

Time to replace aging
voting machines in SC
If your smartphone battery dies, it’s frustrat-
ing, but you can find a land line somewhere.
Or if your car’s backup camera goes down, you
can always turn around and look out of the
rear window — the way it was done in the early
2000s. But if the vintage 2004 voting machine
on which you cast your vote goes haywire or,
worse, records your vote wrong, your options
are much more limited, especially in South Car-
olina where electronic votes are not backed up
by a paper trail. And with foreign powers eager
to interfere with our elections and some U.S.
politicians casting doubts on the integrity of our
elections, South Carolina must not put off any
longer replacing its aging, trouble-prone voting
machines with new ones that use the most so-
phisticated security capabilities and efficiency
available. The machines used in South Carolina
have a life expectancy of 15 years. That means
it would be irresponsible to count on them for
voting in 2020. Indeed, state election officials
have been asking legislators for six years to
find the money for 13,000 new touchscreen ma-
chines – the kind that produce paper records.
Lawmakers have set aside $5 million, but that’s
only a small step toward the $65 million price
tag. House Ways and Means Committee Chair-
man Brian White, R-Anderson, has said he ex-
pects the money will be allocated from $177
million left over from the 2017-18 fiscal year.
And, he said, new voting machines should be
up and running for the general election in 2020.
His colleagues would make a big mistake if they
fail to back him up.
Election officials insist that the midterm votes
were recorded accurately, if not always efficient-
ly. Batteries died and had to be replaced, and
fraying electrical cords needed to be bandaged.
In addition to causing longer waits for voters,
the repairs and maintenance are expensive.
Particularly troubling to voters and officials
are problems with calibration, which are becom-
ing more common. If a screen’s display is out of
alignment, a voter’s touch may select the wrong
candidate. Voters can catch the error right away
or as they review their votes before confirming
them. But even with these protections, voters

last Tuesday, council
unanimously approved a
request to purchase play-
ground equipment from
Landscape Structures
through HGAC, a Nation-
wide, Government Pro-
curement Service.
“Our project team se-
lected a playground offer
by Landscape Structures
that can be purchased
through HGAC, which is
a nationwide, government
purchasing cooperative,”
said Red Watson, Assis-
tant Director of Parks
and Recreation. “By going
through HGAC, we’ll have
the opportunity to save
about $18,000 on this par-
ticular playground.
“Our contractor, of
course, has occupied the
building,” he said. “Maybe
75 percent of the demo
inside of the building has
been performed, so, now,
we’re working through
some of the RFIs (Request
For Information), moving
forward with the interior
construction.”

Russell Scott Foxhall,

gineer, patient coach,
master story teller, devot-
ed husband, and unsur-
passed father died Thurs-
day, November 15th, at his
home in Greer, SC. Born
on April 11th, 1943, in
La Jolla, California, Rusty
graduated from Auburn
University in 1967, be-
fore living and working in
eight cities during the first
three years of marriage
to his college sweetheart,
Helen Likis, and starting
his 38-year tenure as a Re-
search and Development
engineer at the Polyester
Film plant on Hood Road.
In Greer, he made a
home for his beloved wife,
who he always wanted to
spoil and his three sons,
who he actively educat-
ed, gently toughened, and
relentlessly supported.
He attended every sin-
gle sporting event and
milestone while quietly
building an accomplished
career that garnered mul-
tiple patents and lifelong
friendships.
Upon retirement in 2007,
Rusty served St. George
Greek Orthodox Cathe-
dral as a parish council
member and stewardship
chairman. He tailgated
in orange and blue–with
brown concoctions. He ar-
the hallowed beaches of
Normandy. He appreciat-
ed simple pleasures and
finer things alike but was
a sworn enemy of snob-
bery and condescension.
He laughed with abandon.
He will be missed by
countless friends who
enjoyed his intelligent
conversations and quick
wit. But most of all, Rusty
will be remembered as a
true gentleman with the
kindest heart, who treat-
ed all with the dignity and
respect that he believed
everyone deserved. He
parked a million cars at
the annual Greek Festival.
Rusty would open doors
for ladies, hold the hands
of children, and shuttle
anyone who needed extra
help to and from the park-
ing lots. These events were
his element—a way to
serve his community and
church while also engag-
ing and enjoying the com-
pany of a diverse group of
people.
Rusty is preceded in
death by his parents Verne
and Geraldine of Thomas-
ton, Alabama. He is sur-
vived by his wife, Helen;
his three sons, Scott (Lau-
ra) of Starkville, Mississip-
pi, Chris (Liz) of Cumming,
Georgia, Joey (Amy) of
Folly Beach, SC; his grand-
children, Kade, Kennedy,
Ryan, Clay, Luke, Lainey,
and Jennings; his brother
Roger (Susan) of San Anto-
nio, Texas; and numerous
nieces, nephews, family,
and friends that he long
considered family.
Visitation was Sunday,
November 18, from 6-8
p.m. at Mackey Funeral
Home at Woodlawn Memo-

sa Brooke Stead of Greer;
a brother, Raymond Mark

grandson, Tristler Tatum

held 11 a.m. Saturday, No-
vember 17, 2018 at Hill-
crest Memory Gardens,
conducted by Rev. Keith
Kelly.

until about mid-march
before we would have a

approved, if they started
today,” McCormick said.
“As such, we want to be
able to review plans and
issue foundation permits
and the like before that.”
Council unanimously
approved the First Read-
ing of Ordinance 37-2018
to amend the City of Greer
zoning code of ordinance
by adding to article 5 dis-
trict regulations to incor-
porate hotels within the
City of Greer’s (C-1) Cen-
tral Business District.
GRACE CHURCH
Part of the new Grace
Church building will be
added to the historic over-
lay district map, following
a council decision.
The new map will in-
clude a warehouse build-
ing on Poinsett Street, but
not the old Mutual Home
building.
“The primary purpose is
for the protection of his-
toric properties,” Driggers
said of the historic overlay
district.
“Because there’s intent
to protect historic prop-
erties, there then became
a tie-in for credits relative
to those because it’s typi-
cally extremely expensive
to restore to the historical
character of property, and
so those credits are typi-
cally available so that they
do not fall into disrepair
and ultimately abolished,”
he said.
Tax credits are available
for properties in the his-
toric district.
“The only thing it does
is give you money if you
want to rehabilitate that to
a historic standard,” said
Kelli McCormick, Planning
Manager. “The federal gov-
ernment does not require
you to keep the structure,
paint the structure a cer-
tain color, do anything to
it. They don’t care what
you do to it. They don’t
care if you tear it down.”
“Of course, they’re his-
torians,” she said. “They
want you to keep it, but
all of the teeth in historic
preservation come in our
local ordinance. What we
enforce and what the BAR
enforces is where those
regulations are strongest.”
In the case of the Grace
Church building, BAR con-
sidered the character of
that structure, which was
part of the old D&D build-
ing.
“They felt that it was a
contributing factor, and
when we removed the Tire
Exchange, it was kind of
like an equal amount of
swap,” McCormick said.
“We want to keep the same
amount of building con-
tributing to the district.”
Council Member Jay
Arrowood expressed con-
cerns about having two
zonings for one parcel.
“In a zoning environ-
ment, you are absolutely
correct that it would be
by the parcel number,”
said City Administrator
Ed Driggers. “For historic
designation, it is specific
to a structure.”
“The purpose of the tax
map identification is sim-
ply as an identifier, but for
historic purposes, it is not
specific to the entire tax
map number,” he said.

for Greenville-Spartan-
burg International Airport
(GSP) during its meeting
on Monday, Nov. 19.
The GSP Master Plan,
which recommends

Two more arrests have
been made in connection
with a robbery and kid-
napping that took place at
a local W.E. Willis conve-
nience store in September.
Ronald Edmond, 20, and
Kenyatta Foster, 42, were
apprehended by police
last week after investiga-

evidence from a Nov. 7
search warrant on Wood-
vine Way that implicated
them as “accessories after
the fact.”

before pulling away to a
63-40 triumph at Dooley
Field in the second round
of the Class AAAA play-
offs.
“It’s been a long time
since we played a team
as good as York, but we
knew that going into the
game,” said Greer Coach
Will Young after the Yel-
low Jackets had improved
to 11-1 punched their tick-
et to a third round match
with Ridge View.
“And we knew it would
be a very physical game,”
Byrnes mounts comeback to top Sumter

The Rebels took a few
punches last Friday at
Sumter, but a late-game
rally sparked by Jalen Mill-
er’s pick-six gave Byrnes a
33-23 victory in round two
of the Class AAAAA Upper
State playoffs.
Reggie Shaw’s team fell
into a hole early, trailing
23-7 at halftime.
“We challenged every-
body to stay calm and not
flinch,” Shaw said. “We
saw some things that we
felt like we could do better
at halftime and our guys
stepped up.”
The Rebels did stay calm
and quarterback Lawrence
Scott connected with Bray-
lin Johnson for a score in
the third to narrow the
deficit to 23-13.
In the fourth quarter,
Byrnes began chipping
away at defense that had
been stout all night. Scott
found Johnson once again
with 10 minutes remain-
ing to bring the score to
within a field goal.
“They have a really good
defense. You have to give
credit to Sumter,” Shaw
said. “They were ready
to play and they’re a very
good football team.”

Young continued. “We told
the kids this is a tough-
ness deal. No one ques-
tions our talent, but you
are not going to win the
state on talent alone. You
have to be tough to do it,
and our kids showed some
toughness tonight.”
Greer’s defense was
sputtering like a junk yard
clunker, a far cry from any
of the previous 11 games.
York put up the most
points of any Greer foe
this season, but the Yellow
Jackets offense, running
like a well-oiled machine,
made the difference by
gashing the Cougars for
nine touchdowns.
“Our offense played well,
although we missed a few
throws,” Young said after
Greer failed to complete
a pass in the second half.
“But overall, I thought our
line played well, Huff had
a good game and made
some big plays, and Edwin
Jalen Miller changed the
game for his team, inter-
cepting a pass and taking
it in for a score, putting
Byrnes on top 26-23.
“Jalen came up big for
us and flipped the game,”
Shaw said. “Getting that
sort of momentum was
crucial for us.”
The Rebels added the
exclamation point a few
minutes later when Scott
found Kris Byrd in the
end zone for the team’s
final score, completing the
comeback.
“We’ve been in those sit-
uations before and we’ve
proven that we can win,
so there was a little bit of
confidence there,” Shaw
said. “We just needed
somebody to make a big
play and several of our
guys did.”
WILL PLAY GAFFNEY
After a close road win,
Byrnes will return home
Friday night to face a fa-
miliar opponent: Gaffney.
The Rebels defeated the
Indians 34-14 in Septem-
ber, but Shaw expects a
different matchup this
time around.
“We’ve got several play-
ers back this time around,
so that’s exciting,” Shaw

“They’ve made some
changes on both sides
of the ball. They’ve got
some different personnel
and I’m sure they’ve got a
good game plan,” he said.
“We know they’ll do some
things differently, so we’ll
have to be ready.”
As the playoff field nar-
rows, three of the teams in
Byrnes’ region remain con-
tenders.
“It’s exactly what we
expected. Region II is the
toughest region in the
state, and it will prepare
you for the postseason if
you can survive it,” Shaw
said. “These kids are battle
tested and they’re ready.”
Shaw’s team will hit the
field again this week, get-
ting prepared for anoth-
er playoff game at Nixon
Field.
“It’s always the goal, and
it’s a blessing to be prac-
ticing on Thanksgiving,”
Shaw said.

night when the Yellow
Jackets will host Ridge
View at 7:30 p.m. at Dool-
ey Field.
“Ridge View is a lot like
some of the teams we
played earlier,” says Greer
Coach Will Young, refer-
ring to the series of 5-A
teams the Yellow Jackets
battled in August and Sep-
tember.
“The playoff games get
tougher every week from
now on,” Young said. The
winner of this game will
advance to play either
Daniel or Wren for the up-
per state title.
Ridge View, a Columbia
area high school estab-
lished in 1995, brings a
9-3 record into the con-
test, having battled from
behind to defeat West-
wood, 34-31 last week.
Greer is coming off a 63-
40 slugfest with York in
which the Yellow Jackets
defense gave up the most
points this year.
The teams have played
two common opponents.
The Blazers lost to York
24-23 during the regu-
lar season, and bombed
Travelers Rest 76-0 in the
playoff opener. Greer (11-
1 overall) smashed Trav-
elers Rest 58-6 during the
regular season.
“We spent a lot of time
looking at film of their
games with York, West-
wood and South Pointe
over the weekend,” Young
said. What the coaching
staff observed was “Ridge
View’s offense is compara-
ble to Byrnes, and maybe
somewhat like Greenville.
Their MO is throwing the
ball.” The Blazers are av-
eraging 254 yards pass-
ing per game. That is bad
news for the Yellow Jacket
secondary that York rid-

’ve got a fun challenge
for you.
Next time you go to
Dooley Field (you should
go this Friday!), park your
car at the BB&T behind
McDonalds about two
minutes before kickoff,
take the short walk to
Dooley, and see if you can
make it inside the stadi-
um before Dre Williams
scores his first touch-
down.
I’ve played this game a
couple of times this year
and it hasn’t gotten old
yet. Friday night, I’d just
walked onto the field
when Dre Williams broke
loose from 74 yards away.
What’s funny is watch-
ing the Greer sideline.
Every single coach and
player is yelling “Go! Go!
Go!” knowing full well
that nobody has a chance
of catching Dre once he
gets in stride.
Dre’s five touchdowns
and 300+ rushing yards
weren’t a first for the
back this season. He gets
those kind of numbers
quite often, actually.
What was truly impres-
sive was that he was bat-
tling the flu Friday night!
After each 70-yard run
he’d go back to the side-
line, catch his breath and
cover up in an electric
blanket. He also had a
hairdryer on hand to help
him battle the elements.
Early in the first quar-
ter, York had answered
his first big run with a
touchdown of their own
when Williams found the
end zone yet again.
A bit excited as he ex-
ited the field, Dre turned
around to make sure the
defense on the field heard
him…
“It’s going to be like this
all night,” he said.
And it was.
Led by Williams and
quarterback Matthew
Huff, Greer’s absolutely
relentless running game
wore York down.
What looked like a
shootout for a while be-
came a bit more lopsided
as Greer’s defense put
together a few stops late.
York is a good football
team. So are a lot of the
teams Greer has played
this year.
But they don’t have Dre
Williams. And that’s why
Greer is the team to beat
in 4A this season.
I learned long ago not
to predict any amount of
success for high school
football teams. The
season is long and the
injuries pile up. Anything
could happen and any-
body can win. We’ve seen
that throughout the 2018
playoffs (Hi, BHP and
South Pointe!).
Greer’s going to be a
tough out, though.
These players, especial-
ly Williams, have put in
the work and now they’re
reaping the benefits.

ly good lineman who also
fills in on the defensive
line. Their leading rusher
is Cori Davis, a 5-10, 175
pound senior who had 573
yards through 11 games.
“Their quarterback has
nearly that many yards,”
Coach Young noted.
Defensively, the Blaz-
ers present a normal line
of big bodies featuring
Jayln Dunbar and his twin
brother, Jurnee Dunbar,
5-10, 290 pounds. “Deaun-
dre Brown, a defensive
end, is their big sack guy,
and the other defensive
end Patrick Jenkins, also a
very good player,” Young
said.
“Ridge View’s lineback-
ers are small but fast, and
so is the secondary. We
saw them in 7-on-7 compe-
tition during the summer,
and all their kids can run.
They are very athletic,”
Young said. “One of their
linebackers, Terry Carson,
is their leading tackler and
probably will be the fast-
est player on the field. We
will have a problem with
him,” Young fears. Carson
leads Ridge View in tack-
les with 76 through the
first 11 games.
Greer did not suffer any
new injuries last week,
and had the good fortune
of welcoming back wide
receiver Braxton Collins
who had been sidelined
with eight weeks with a
broken collar bone. “Brax-
ton played well, and I ex-
pect him to make some
good catches for us this
week, Young said.
The Yellow Jackets are
in the midst of a reg-
ular week of practices
through Wednesday after-
noon. They will do a walk
through early Thanksgiv-
ing morning at Dooley
Field, followed by a team
breakfast. Young plans
another walk through on
Friday morning in the gym
prior to the pre-game meal
at 3 o’clock.

Late charge gives Logano first cup win

and Me” — with the “Me”
being Joey Logano waging
vehicular war against the
three most prolific win-
ners in the Monster Energy
NASCAR Cup Series.
Now “Me” is a champion.
In a thrilling finish that
featured all four Champi-
onship 4 drivers battling
for the race victory and the
title—and finishing 1-2-
3-4 in the Ford EcoBoost
400—Logano charged past
defending series cham-
pion Martin Truex Jr. on
Lap 256 of 267 and pulled
away to win his first cham-
pionship.
“Oh, my God, yes!” Loga-
no screamed on his radio
as his No. 22 Team Penske
Ford flashed across the
finish line 1.725 seconds
ahead of Truex, estab-
lishing a handful of mile-
stones in the process.
“We did it! We won the
championship! I can’t be-
lieve it. I don’t know what
to say. This team, (owner)
Roger Penske, (crew chief)
Todd Gordon, the pit crew.
Oh, my God! They gave me
the car I needed at the
end to do my job. Put me
in position to do my job. I
couldn’t be more proud of
them. We won the champi-
onship! Oh, my God!”
The victory was Loga-
no’s third of the season,

Yellow Jackets to a quick
lead. But York rallied to
take a 14-7 lead by the end
of the first period. Greer
battled back to forge a 28-
21 halftime lead, and then
made it 35-21 on their first
possession of the second
half. From there, Greer
was able to maintain the
lead the rest of the way de-
spite giving up three more
touchdowns.
“Our defense kept fight-
ing and plugging,” Young
said. “But we had a lot of
mistakes and some miss
communication out there
tonight. The kids played
hard, but they have to play
in the right spot, and they
weren’t in places on York’s
slant passes. We will get
that cleaned up,” he prom-
ised.
“The main thing,” Young
added, “is we’re happy to
get the win, and we get to
play another week.”
GREER STRIKES FIRST
Greer went up 7-0 when
Williams shot through a
hole in the line, wove his
way through several de-
fenders in the secondary
and scampered the rest
of 74 yards to the house
on the Jackets’ first play.
Edwin Sales followed by
kicking his first of nine
straight extra points.
After that, Greer suf-
fered from poor field po-
sition on their next two
possessions. Backed up
at the three, the Jackets
punted out to their own 31
yard line, and York scored
in just three plays. Quar-
terback Tanner McKinney
hooked up with H-back
Kahlil Ellis on an 18-yard

his first at the 1.5-mile
career. With the win, he
sealed the first manufac-
turer’s championship for
Ford since 2002 and the
first driver’s champion-
ship for the car maker
since Kurt Busch won the
first Playoffs in 2004.
It was the first title for
the Ford Fusion. It was
the last title for the Ford
Fusion, which will be re-
placed by the Mustang in
the Cup series next sea-
son. It was the second
championship for Penske,
who got his first in 2012
when Brad Keselowski
beat Clint Bowyer and Jim-
mie Johnson for the top
prize in stock car racing.
Keselowski figured
prominently in Sunday’s
outcome, but not as a con-
tender. With 21 laps left,
Truex passed Logano for
third place and took off in
pursuit of eventual third-
place finisher Kevin Har-
vick, who was running sec-
ond at the time, with Kyle
Busch holding the lead on
old tires, hoping for a cau-
tion.
On Lap 247, Busch’s
prayer was answered.
Contact from Keselowski’s
Ford sent the Toyota of
Daniel Suarez spinning to
cause the fifth caution of
the race. That yellow flag
changed everything. Busch
got the caution he needed
to get back into conten-
tion, and Logano got the
chance he needed to win
touchdown pass, and Max
Haynes kicked the extra
point to even the score.
The Yellow Jackets came
right back, however, driv-
ing 70 yards to score in
nine plays. The big play
was a 17-yard pass from
Huff to Austin Green.
Huff rambled into the end
zone from five yards out.
But the Cougars matched
that with a 70-yard scor-
ing drive, capped by a
12-yard touchdown pass
from McKinney to Ethan
Mitchell on a slant route to
make it 14-all starting the
second period.
Greer went nowhere af-
ter mishandling the en-
suing kickoff at the 13
yard line. The result was
a punt to midfield where
York took over and scored
in three plays. Stephen
Oglesby’s 41-yard run
down the sidelines gave
the visitors a 21-14 lead.
“When we got behind,
the kids answered the bell
and didn’t panic,” Coach
Young noted. The Yellow
Jackets regrouped and
mounted a 79-yard scor-
ing drive of 11 plays. Wil-
liams snagged a 22-yard
pass from Huff in the end
zone to knot the game at
21-all with 3:50 remaining
in the first half.
Four plays later, Greer
lineman Quack Cohen
blocked a York punt and
Jakayre Kerns recovered
the ball at the Cougars
34 yard line. Huff quick-
ly hooked up with Miller
DeArmond on a 29-yard
touchdown pass enabling
Greer to take a 28-21 half-
time lead.
Greer took command
of the game by taking the
second half kickoff and
marching 66 yards to the
end zone. Huff made the
key play in the drive, rum-
bling 10 yards on third-
and-five to pull the Yellow

Busch was first off pit
road and led the field to
green on Lap 253, but
Truex surged past him in
the first corner with Loga-
no following into second
place. Three laps later,
Logano made a breathtak-
ing charge into Turn 1 and
sped around Truex to the
outside. Game over.
“My car was really good
on entry all day,” Logano
said, in what may be the
Jackets out to midfield.

one-yard scoring dive as
Greer opened up a two
touchdown lead at 35-21.
“That score was huge,”
Coach Young said. “And
then the fact that we were
able to pretty much keep

YORK REFUSED TO FOLD
That was far from the fi-
nal score however as York
refused to fold. The Cou-
gars went to the air im-
mediately, connecting on
passes of 14 and 27 yards
to reach the red zone
where McKinney deliv-
ered a 15-yard touchdown
strike to Jorden Evans.
Greer answered be-
fore another minute had
elapsed after Cameron
Martin returned the en-
suing kickoff 47 yards to
the York 28-yard line. Two
plays later, Williams burst
through the middle to the
end zone 22 yards away.
That made it 42-28 with
7:16 still remaining in the
third quarter.
The Yellow Jackets be-
gan to salt the game away
with a 59 yard drive fol-
lowing a short York punt.
Williams again turned on
the jets, shooting upfield
on a 42 yard sprint to the
Cougars three yard line.
Huff scored from one yard
out two plays later as the
lead mounted to 49-28.
York regrouped once
more, however, after hav-
ing backed the Yellow
Jackets up inside their
own five yard line and
then returning a short
punt to the Greer 31 yard
line. McKinney scored on a
one-yard sneak to cap the
drive as the final quarter
began. York overcame a
10-yard-penalty with a 21-
Championship Weekend.
The victory was the cul-
mination of week in which
Logano had declared him-
self the favorite despite
his total of two victories
entering the race, com-
pared with eight each for
Harvick and Busch and
four for Truex.
“We were the favorite,
like I told you before the
race started,” Logano said
in Victory Lane. “I’m so
yard completion of a pass
that hit the ground and
bounced into the receiv-
er’s arms. But Greer’s Na-
jawuan Smith blocked the
Cougars extra point kick,
leaving the score at 49-34.
“That was another big play
which helped us maintain
a good lead,” Young noted.
Williams continued to
make his presence felt,
scoring on a 22-yard run
five minutes later to hike
the lead to 56-34.
York came back to add
another touchdown when
McKinney hooked up with
Ethan Mitchell on a 60-
yard, third down pass. The
Cougars scored five plays
later on a three-yard carry
by Oglesby. York attempt-
ed a two point conversion
with a pass that fell in-
complete.
A penalty against York
was assessed on the kick-
off. That was followed by
an onside kickoff attempt
that failed, handing Greer
the ball at the Cougar’s 38
yard line. Williams found
a huge hole in the line on
the next play and was in
the end zone a few sec-
onds later to make the fi-
nal tally 63-40.
The stats reflect the
high score. Greer piled
up 495 total yards for 22
first downs. The Yellow
Jackets ground game put
up 414 yards while Huff’s
passing, five of 14 with
one interception, added
81 yards.
York amassed 426 total
yards for 21 first downs.
The Cougars completed
17 of 31 passes for 243
air yards and added 183
yards on the ground.
Both teams were hit with
a bucket load of 14 penal-
ties apiece. Those walk
offs cost Greer an even
100 yards and York 135
yards.

taking the checkered flag,
Logano thought he had
pulled a muscle, but the
pain was well worth it.
“Man, I worked my whole
life to get here,” Logano
said. “To win a champion-
ship. We’ve been so close.
It has been 10 seasons of
fighting for this.”

Watson, who were both
first team All-Confer-
ence nominees while Di-
majiay Rooks earned the
program’s first offensive
nod with a second team
All-Conference appear-
ance.
Laughter, a four-year
starter for the Crusaders
at nose was a force in the
middle for North Green-
ville, anchoring a defense
that was ranked 23rd in
the country in third down
stops. Laughter was eighth
on the team in tackles
this season racking up 24
stops on the season in-
league. Watson finished
the year with 27.5 tackles
from his defensive back
position and also had a
tackle for a loss and a
pair of fumble recoveries.
He also forced a fumble.
Quarterbacks quickly be-
gan looking opposite of
Watson on the field as he
finished with eight break-
ups to go along with his
league-leading intercep-
tion total. He was ninth
in Division II football in
average interceptions per
contest.
Aaron Watson was also
one of NGU’s biggest re-
turn threats this season,
returning 11 kicks for 135
yards on the season.

munity Center (MTCC) cel-
ebrated the opening of its
new Senior Center with a
ribbon cutting last Friday.
“Allison Commons: A
Place for Active Adults”
is named after Rep. Rita
Allison and Ron Allison
for their longtime contri-
butions to seniors in the
area.
“We really want this
place to be a celebration
of the rich history of our
community as well as its
vibrant future,” said An-
drea Moore, MTCC Execu-
tive Director. “I think this
is just such an amazing
example of what happens
when public and private
and nonprofit all come
together to do something
great for their community.
“When we started
talking about an opportu-
nity to open a senior cen-
ter in this community, one
of the very early things we
talked about was the idea
of naming it in honor of
Ronnie and Rita Allison,”
Moore said. “They have
been such an inspiration
to me. Ronnie married Rita
when she was just barely
out of high school. For the
last 59 years and counting,
they have been partners
in contributing so much
to this community and to
this country as well as to
this little plot of land.”

the haze of Ma’s despair

through the woods and
back alleys of their town.
It’s all seen through the
eyes of the youngest
brother, Jonah (Evan Ro-
sado) -- on the cusp of 10,
with a sensitivity and cre-
ativity that both bind him
to his family and set him
apart. Gorgeously filmed
and lovingly cast.
“Kin” (PG-13) -- As near
as I can tell, “Kin,” by twin
directors Jonathon and
Josh Baker, is two movies
unceremoniously jammed
into one. Whatever bits
didn’t make it into the box
were the bits that would
have made the combina-
tion seamless. Alas, it’s a
miss. Myles Truitt plays
Eli, a boy who finds a
souped-up ray gun in an
abandoned warehouse.
His is a sci-fi adventure
film where he learns to
use the weapon and is
chased down by some
spaceman-type bad guys
who aim to retrieve it. The
other story is about his ad-
opted brother Jimmy (Jack
Reznor), fresh out of jail
and trying to do the right
thing by his little brother,
but getting caught up in a
beef with drug lord Taylor
(James Franco). The broth-
ers go on the lam together,
chased by everyone.

le, found at age 54, after
he’d had several strokes.
He had surgery to repair
it and has been well ever
since.
I would like to know
why a PFO isn’t often
mentioned or considered.
When I see an obituary
for a young person who
died suddenly, I wonder
if there was an undiag-
nosed hole in the person’s
heart. One in 6 people has
a hole in the heart; that is
a high percentage. I think
the public should be edu-
cated and made aware of
this congenital condition.

ANSWER: A patent fora-
men ovale (which literally
means “open oval-shaped
window”) is a remnant of
our embryology. The fora-
men ovale is a small open
flap that is necessary to
send oxygenated blood
from the placenta to the
body of the developing fe-
tus. In about 25 percent of
people (that’s 1 in 4, even
higher than you thought),
the “hole” doesn’t com-
pletely close. PFO is the
most common of the
“holes” in the heart (ven-
tricular septal defect and
atrial septal defects are
the other common ones).

it is that a “cryptogenic”
stroke (one with no ob-
vious cause) may be due
to a PFO. What is likely is
that a blood clot can pass
through the foramen ovale
and go to the brain’s blood
vessel, blocking off blood
supply to an area of the
brain, causing a stroke.
The absolute increase
in stroke risk is hard to
quantify. For people who
have never had a stroke,
it is generally not recom-
mended to close the PFO.
This surgery has risks, and
these risks probably out-
weigh the small potential
benefit. For people who
have had a stroke, the risk
of recurrent stroke from
PFO is higher. One group
has created a model (the
RoPE score) to help predict
the likelihood of recurrent
stroke. This can help the
clinician examine the ben-
efits of surgical repair of
the PFO. Surgery is most
likely to benefit younger
people without traditional
risk factors for stroke.

ANSWER: I often get
asked whether apple cider
vinegar cures arthritis (it
doesn’t) or can help re-
lieve symptoms (it might,
but there is no good ev-
idence that it does), but I
have never heard anyone
ask about vinegar touch-
ing the skin causing in-
ternal problems. Vinegar
is a mild acid (most are
about 5 percent acetic
acid), which normally isn’t
particularly irritating to
the skin, and shouldn’t be
absorbed. Even if it were,
acetic acid is found in the
body (it’s an important
molecule in several meta-
bolic pathways), and your
body can use it as an ener-
gy source. There is no rea-
son to be concerned about
being exposed to house-
hold vinegar.
