Frequent Flyer Miles

Created By: Mia Perrin

Situation
Let’s say you are a Frequent Flyer Member, and you travel often to earn points.
Once you earn 45,000 points, you receive a free flight! You earn 2 points for every
mile you travel, plus 100 free points for every trip that you book.
Linear Equation
I created a linear equation to represent the points you earn for every mile you
travel.

y=2x+100
City Distance in Miles (x) Linear Equation Points Earned (y) Ordered Pairs (x,y)

Boston -> Liberia 2,360 miles y=2(2,360)+100 4,820 points 2360,4820

Liberia -> Brasilia 3,154 miles y=2(3,154)+100 6,408 points 3154,6408

Brasilia -> Paris 5,431 miles y=2(5,431)+100 10,962 points 5431,10962

Paris -> Rome 688 miles y=2(688)+100 1,476 points 688,1476

Rome -> Cairo 1,327 miles y=2(1,327)+100 2,754 points 1327,2754

Cairo -> Pretoria 3,864 miles y=2(3,864)+100 7,828 points 3864,7828

Pretoria -> Melbourne 6,439 miles y=2(6,439)+100 12,978 points 6439,12978

Melbourne -> Tokyo 5,095 miles y=2(5,095)+100 10,290 points 5095,10290

Tokyo -> Vancouver 4,698 miles y=2(4,698)+100 9,496 points 4698,9496

Vancouver -> LA 1,083 miles y=2(1,083)+100 2,266 points 1083,2266

LA -> Boston 2,594 miles y=2(2,594)+100 5,288 points 2594,5288

Questions
1.) Determine if this relationship is a function and explain your answer.

This relationship is a function because there is only one input for each output.

2.) Identify the slope and what it represents.

The slope is 2, and it represents that you earn 2 points per mile of travel.

3.) Describe the relationship between the distance in miles and points earned.

You earn 2 points per mile of travel, and 100 extra points per flight.

4.) What is the y-intercept of this equation? Explain what the y-intercept means.

The y-intercept of this equation is 100, and it represents that you earn 100 free points for every trip that you book.

5.) Did you earn a free flight? If so, in which city did you earn the free flight?

You did earn a free flight. You earned it during your trip from Pretoria to Melbourne
