Faculty of Science and Mathematics

BACKGROUND

Fame That Transcended Three Generations

The Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) has played its own unique role in the educational history of this nation. At the beginning
of its inception, this University was a Teachers’ Training College before it was upgraded to what it is now. UPSI went through three
different eras, Sultan Idris Training College (SITC), 29 November 1922 - 1957, Sultan Idris Teachers’ Training College (MPSI),
1957 - 1987 and Sultan Idris Teachers Institute (IPSI), 21 February 1987 - April 1997. These three eras saw the institution producing
generations of teachers and educators that spanned 75 years. The university entered a new era in 1 May 1997 when the institute
was upgraded to a University. It was officially named Sultan Idris Education University (SIEU) under the Government gazette RU.
(A) 132 & 133 on 24 February 1997 under the Order of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (Corporation) and the Order of Universiti
Pendidikan Sultan Idris (Campus) 1997.

At the beginning of its establishment, there were only four faculties offering ten programs of studies. They were the
Faculty of Languages, the Faculty of Social Sciences and Arts, the Faculty of Science and Technology and the Faculty of Cognitive
Sciences and Humanities. The number of programs increased over the years. In 2002, two more faculties were established, namely
the Faculty of Business and Economics and the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication. By that time, there were
six faculties offering 19 programs of study at Bachelors level. This increase reflected the transformation carried out to cater to the
academic needs and the increasing number of students enrolling at this University. Later, the Faculty of Social Sciences and Arts
was renamed the Faculty of Arts and Music whereas the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Faculty of Sport
Sciences were established as new faculties.

The restructuring of all the faculties in UPSI was implemented in 1 June 2010 with the objective of increasing its
competitiveness. This objective is put in place in order to realise the university’s stated vision and mission of being a pioneer
institution in innovation and creativity, research, commersialisation, high-impact and creative inventions and producing a creative
workforce to further develop the nation. The existing faculties are as follows:

LIST OF FACULTIES

1. Faculty of Science and Mathematics;

2. Faculty of Human Development;

3. Faculty of Languages and Communication;

4. Faculty of Sport Sciences and Coaching;

5. Faculty of Human Science;

6. Faculty of Music and Performing Arts;

7. Faculty of Arts, Computing and Creative Industry;

8. Faculty of Management and Economics; and

9. Faculty of Technical and Vocational.

ACADEMIC ADVISORY SYSTEM

1. Introduction
The Academic Advisory System is the service given by the academic staffs to guide, advise and help students to
solve their academic problems. In the credited semester system, students are allowed to choose courses according
to their interests and abilities. Therefore, the students need to be advised by the Academic Advisor (AA) from time to
time so that the time spend in this university are well planned so that they can complete their studies at the university
successfully.

2. Academic Advisor Concepts

An academic advisor is a university staff (usually an academic staff of the faculty) assigned to guide students in their
studies. Under this system, an academic advisor is assigned to assist students in clarifying the objectives of the
program, help plan the academic courses to be taken and guide students to their full potential to meet all the
graduation requirements. Normally an academic advisor is assigned to the several students (10-15 students) to assist
and advise them from the first day of their university life until they completed their studies at the university.

3. The Objectives Academic Advisory System

3.1 Assist students to improve their academic potential;
3.2 Provide guidance to the students in planning their studies and other activities that could improve their
academic achievement and individual personality;
3.3 Assist in solving academic problems;
3.4 Strengthen the relationship between students and lecturers;
3.5 Provide advice on career opportunities to the students; and
3.6 Motivate students who are not performing well to maximize their ability to excel in the program.

4. Roles & Responsibilities of the Academic Advisor

The responsibilities of the Academic Advisory are as follows:

4.1 Advice students under their supervision in academic matters, such as the selection of the areas of
specialization, minor courses and the registration of courses with pre-requisite conditions and so on. The
Academic Advisor is expected to meet and discuss with their advisee at least three (3) times per semester;
4.2 Advice the students about the requirement of minor specialization, exemption of courses, elective courses,
and graduation requirements as a whole;
4.3 Review the progress of students under his care from time to time and advice the students about the
requirements that must be met in order to graduate;
4.4 Review the problems faced by the students in relation to their studies and make useful recommendations
to the Head of Department or lecturers concerned about the steps to be taken to assist these students such
as having special meeting or tutorial or advise students to drop these courses or other matters;
4.5 Explain to the students about the education system and its requirements creditworthy;
4.6 Refer students under his charge to the relevant department when students faced non-academic problems;
4.7 Advise students under his care about specific learning methods that can help them in their studies;
4.8 Explain students under the supervision about the career opportunities available to them;
4.9 Review the application for deferment of studies or leave with the permission of the students under his care;
4.10 Provide other advices that can help students in their studies.

5. Assignment of students to the Academic Advisor

Students will be placed under the Academic Advisor / lecturers in the Faculty / Department for the program. Being the
Academic Advisor is part of the job and responsibility of a lecturer.

6. Conclusion
In order to ensure the Academic Advisory System runs effectively, it requires the cooperation of both the lecturers
who are appointed as the Academic Advisors and the students as advisees. Both parties should play their role
effectively to gain the expected benefits. The Dean or Deputy Dean (Academic and Student Development) shall
monitor advisory process continuously to ensure that the academic advisor system worked well for the benefit of all.
