Ranarr Weed: Theory of Medicinal Qualities of the
Ranarr Weed In its Use in “Defense Potions” and
“Prayer Potions”

Abstract—Ranarr Weed, henceforth referred to as Herba
ranarr, has experienced a rise in use over the last fifteen years.
In this paper, consumer use of Herba ranarr will be explored for
both potential medicinal use as well as its use in contemporary
brews knows as the “Defense Potion” and “Prayer Potion”. In
this document, a theory on “prayer” and its relation to Herba
ranarr will also be explored. Due to its ease of growth by even
minimally or informally educated botanists, the average quality
of Herba ranarr will be explored as well.
Our results highly suggest the likelihood of the existence of
essential oils in Herba ranarr. When compared to other herbs
with similar effects, we have decided to name these essential oils
“Tetranarrinol” and “Ranarrinol” due to the composition of these
oils. Different strains of Herba ranarr may be bred to favor the
higher concentration of Tetranarrinol oils resulting in potions
with stronger effects.
Due to similarities shared between Herba cadantine, such as
colors and medicinal effects on humans, it is believed that Herba
cadantine may in fact be a speciation of herba that descended
from Herba ranarr.
I. I NTRODUCTION
Initial examination of the history of Herba ranarr yielded
little results. All that was able to be found was that oral con-
sumption of Herba ranarr as a raw, fresh herb was unfavorable
and not recommended. Instead, it is recommended for Herba
ranarr to be distilled or brewed into various alchemical potions
known as the “Defense Potion” and the “Prayer Potion”.
This herb is classified as a weed due to its ability to readily
grow in multiple climates and environment, and is easily
cultivated by even unskilled botanists, farmers, and hobbyist
gardeners. It is believed that over the years, these cultivations
may have results in a mutation, resulting in Herba cadantine
due to similarities between the two herbs. Regardless, Herba
cadantine may not be classified as a weed at this time, as it
required special care and knowledge to successfully cultivate
it and grow it to maturity so that it may be harvested.
II. D EFENSE P OTIONS
After preliminary research yielded little results, our exam-
inations sent us towards the first potion we identified, the
“Defense Potion”. The reflex-enhancing effects of the Defense
Potion, allowing the imbiber to dodge physical attacks, are
well-documented, as are its moderate effects on the harmless
absorbtion of magical attacks made by magisters versed in
the arcane arts. What role, then, does Herba ranarr play in
bestowing the user with enhanced defensive capability?
The secondary ingredient used in Defense Potions, Cal-
licarpa dichotoma f. albifructa, is shared with its stronger
cousin, the Super Defense Potion. However, it should be noted
that Herba cadantine is used in this stronger brew, further
highlighting slimilarities between Herba ranarr and Herba
cadantine. Referencing the increase in magical resistance,
however slight, coupled with results that will be discussed
later, has led to the belief that Herba ranarr increases pain
tolerance when consumed after distilling or brewing.
III. P RAYER P OTIONS
While it is well-documented in religious and historical texts
that various deities once roamed the world of Gielinor, no
proof yet exists beyond these writings to support their claim.
Because of this, scholars and researchers have long wondered
about the nature of Prayer, and, subsequently, the true effects
of Prayer Potions.
Typically, individuals who pray to a deity will also be
consuming Prayer Potions. In many, though not all, cases,
these prayers will manifest as a means to protect the individual
from harm; it is known that these prayers are indeed effective.
Using the Gielinorian Pain Scale1 , these prayers have been
shown to yield an increase in pain tolerance of approximately
40%. Our experimental data features a maximum decrease in
pain of 35, or 47.94% increase in tolerance. In almost every
case, the use of these “Protection” prayers was accompanied
with the use of Prayer Potions.
IV. T ETRANARRINOL AND R ANARRINOL
In-house results suggest that the active ingredient in Prayer
Potions is in fact Herba ranarr, and not the secondary ingre-
dient Poaceae snape; specifically, hypothesized Tetranarrinol.
It is believed that Tetranarrinol induces both hallucinogenic
and depressant effects that result in the user experiencing
increased pain tolerance before succumbing to the pain and
damage of their wounds. The use of Poaceae snape suggests
that in the brewing process, the Poaceae snape draws out
the Tetranarrinol, increasing the concentration that enters the

bloodstream and resulting a stronger hallucinogenic and/or
depressant effect on the imbiber.
In addition to Tetranarrinol, it is hypothetisized that a
weaker oil, Ranarrinol, is found in Herba ranarr. It is believed
that this oil, or a similar such oil, is also found in Herba
cadantine, due to the similarities between the Defense Potion
and the Super Defense Potion. This hypothesis is supported by
the use of Callicarpa dichotoma f. albifructa in both potions,
which may act similarly for these potions as Poaceae snape
does for Prayer Potions.
An edge case involving Herba ranarr has us looking in
recent history. The Democracy of Gielinor had polled the
legalization of various herbs, including Herba ranarr, for use
in Cooking. Some accounts suggest that by combining high-
quality fish eggs with Herba ranarr, the consumer is able
to experience the hallucinogenic effects associated with the
Prayer Potion. While an Alchemist’s License was polled to still
be required for distribution, the resolution ultimately failed.
This has seemingly not curtailed accounts of uncivilized folk
using these techniques.
V. C ULTIVATION
Due to its powerful effects, the ease of growth of Herba
ranarrhas called for major reform in the growing industry.
Almost any layperson is able to successfully grow Herba
ranarr, which has led to large quantities of the herb circulating
the market. As such, a question is brought to the quality
of Herba ranarr. Research and reference of published data
of transactions involving Herba ranarr suggests that there is
minimal loss in quality or levels of Tetranarrinols and Ra-
narrinols in individual leaves. Instead, less successful growers
experience a lower yield of usable leaves when harvesting their
plants.
