Science 9: Biology - Reproduction (Ch.

4-6)
Rationale: In this unit we will be looking at the life in its simplest form. Studying cells will help students understand how all organisms function. Cellular
structures work together to carry out life functions, which enable organisms to meet their basic needs. Learning about cells is important because
students need to develop a general understanding of cellular processes as it connects to concepts that affect our daily lives, such as; illness,
biotechnology, GMOs, genetics, medicine, growth, and reproduction.
Culminating tasks or events to celebrate or bring together the learning:
Projects, Chapter Tests, Unit Test

Big Ideas Important/essential questions
● Cells are derived from cells ● How do cells multiply?
U ● What are the advantages and disadvantages of sexual and asexual reproduction?
N ● What are the structures of cells and the functions they perform?
D ● What is the structure and function of DNA?
E ● How does the cell cycle work?
R ● What are the stages of mitosis and meiosis?
S ● What are mutagens, carcinogens, cancer and hereditary diseases?
T ● What are stem cells and why are they important?
A ● How does asexual reproduction happen and what are its various types?
N ● How does sexual reproduction in animals occur and what are the two types?
D ● What are GMOs and the pros/cons?
● What is cloning and its ethical implication?
● What is gene therapy and its ethical implications?
Curricular Competencies: (skills)
● Connect scientific explorations to careers in science
● Consider social, ethical, and environmental implications of the findings from their own and others’ investigations
D ● Consider the role of scientists in innovation
O ● Demonstrate a sustained intellectual curiosity about a scientific topic or problem of personal interest
● Evaluate the validity and limitations of a model or analogy in relation to the phenomenon modelled
● Demonstrate an awareness of assumptions, question information given, and identify bias in their own work and secondary sources
● Consider the changes in knowledge over time as tools and technologies have developed
Content (learning standards):
K ● mitosis: the process through which pre-existing cells make two identical copies of themselves
N ● different forms: different forms of asexual reproduction: fission, budding, cloning, spores, grafting
O ● meiosis: the process through which sex cells (eggs and sperm) are formed by the dividing of a parent cell twice, resulting in four
daughter cells
W ● human sexual reproduction: the result of humans having two parents is that offspring are not genetically identical to either parent

Formative Assessment (for learning):

● Quizzes, Textbook Questions, Field Trip
Summative Assessment (of learning):
● Chapter/Unit Test
