Main Function of Leaves

 Photosynthesis the process producing food

- Leaf manufactures food material in the presence of sunlight and green pigment.
 Interchange of gases it takes place both in respiration and photosynthesis
 Evaporation of water water absorbed by the root hairs of the plants is evaporated from
the leaf surface during day time.
 Storage of food
 Vegetative Propagation leaves of some plants produce buds on them. These buds can
grow into a new plant.

Parts and Functions of the Leaf

 Blade the entire broad, flat area of the leaf

- Wide flattered area of leaf for concentrating sunlight on photosynthetic cells.
 Veins are the vascular tissue that support the leaf, made up of xylem and phloem,
transports food, water and nutrients to the plants.
 Petiole are the stem like part of the leaf that joins the blade to the stem.
 Stipules are two small flaps that grow at the base of the petiole of plants.
 Margin the outer edge of the blade.
 Midrib the main median rib that runs down the center of the leaf.

Types and Classification of Plants

 Palmate Leaf several veins extending from the place where the leaf stem attaches to the
leaf.
 Pinnate Leaf one large vein attaches the length of the leaf with smaller veins branching
off.
 Parallel Leaf many small veins running the length of the leaf.

Main Function of Stem

 Support for the evaluation of leaves, flowers and fruits

 Transport of fluids between the roots and the shoots in the xylem and phloem
 Storage of nutrients
 Production of new living tissue
 Serves as a means of asexual reproduction in many plant species

Parts and Functions of Stem

 Abscission Layer begin the process of abscission, or natural separation of the leaf from
the rest of the plant.
 Node hold one or more leaves as well as buds.
 Terminal Bud main area of growth in most plants.
 Internode distances of one node from another
 Lateral Bud or Axillary Bud capable of developing into a branch shoot or flower cluster,
 Petiole stalk of leaf, attaches the blade to the stem

Types and Classification of Stem

 Aerial stem
- Stems grow above the ground
- Also known as “above ground”
 Subterranean Stem
- Stems that grow below the ground
- No obvious stem above the ground
- Bear only leaves and flower stalks called stem
 Herbaceus Stem
- Have no permanent woody tissue with short life span and die soon after
flowering.
- example: taro or gabi family
 Suffrutescent Stem
- Less woody of half woody at the basa part
- Example: eggplant
 Woody Stem
- Permanent woody tissue which persist indefinitely and is made of secondary
xylem.
- Example: shrubs and trees.
Main Function of Roots

 Absorption of water
 Anchorage or anchoring the plant
 Storing of food

Parts and Functions of Roots

 Root Cap protects the roots apical meristem

- Paves the way for lengthening of the plant.
 Root Hair “absorbent hair”
- Collects water and minerals nutrients present in the soil.
 Lateral Roots serve to anchor the plant.
 Primary Root during its growth it branches from the secondary root.

Types and Classification of Roots

 Primary Root main branch; forst to emerge after seed generation.

 Secondary Root branching roots
