10 Word stress game
Activity
Pairwork. Students play a word stress board game.

Focus
Pronunciation: changing word stress.

Preparation
Photocopy one worksheet for each pair of students. Each
student will need about ten counters of one kind, e.g.
coloured sweets, to place on the game board.

Procedure
• Divide the class into pairs. Hand out one worksheet to
each pair.
• Explain how to play the game. Player A aims to make
a continuous chain of their counters connecting any
hexagon on the left of the board to any one on the right.
Player B must do the same but from top to bottom of
the grid. The winner is the first person to complete their
chain. (N.B. Players should try to block the other player
by placing their counter in the way.) In the example game
below, the player using triangles has won because he/she
has made an unbroken line from top to bottom.

• Players take it in turns to choose any hexagon that

doesn’t have a counter on it yet. They must then make
a good sentence using the word from that hexagon with
the correct word stress. The word can have grammatical
changes (e.g. the verb insult could be insulted or
insulting) but must remain a noun or a verb (as indicated
by the shading of the hexagon). Sentences must be a
minimum of five words long.
• If their partner agrees that the sentence is good, the player
leaves their counter on this hexagon. If the partner points
out a mistake (e.g. with meaning, grammar or stress), the
player can’t place a counter on the hexagon. (They can try
again next turn if it is still free.)

Note
It’s probably a good idea to allow the use of dictionaries
in this activity so that students can check meaning and
pronunciation.
