SIMATIC S7-PCT

Security information:

Siemens provides products and solutions with industrial security functions that support the secure
operation of plants, solutions, machines, equipment and/or networks. They are important components in a
holistic industrial security concept. With this in mind, Siemens’ products and solutions undergo continuous
development. Siemens recommends strongly that you regularly check for product updates.

For the secure operation of Siemens products and solutions, it is necessary to take suitable preventive
action (e.g. cell protection concept) and integrate each component into a holistic, state-of-the-art industrial
security concept. Third-party products that may be in use should also be considered.

Devices connected to an enterprise network or directly to the internet must be appropriately protected
against unauthorized access, e.g. by use of firewalls and network segmentation.

2.3 Additional installation notes

To ensure that all users of a computer running Microsoft Windows 7 as operating system can work with
SIMATIC S7-PCT, the catalog SIMATIC S7-PCT is installed in path %ProgramData%\Siemens\S7-PCT.
The setup of SIMATIC S7-PCT sets the user permissions of the catalog directory so that all users of the
computer have read and write permissions for this directory. On computers running Microsoft Windows
XP as operating system, the catalog is installed in the path % ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application
Data\Siemens\S7-PCT.
Notes on Usage (Release Notes)

• S7-PCT has not been integrated in the access control and change log mechanisms of STEP
7 yet.

• Communication with IO-Link master modules in PLCs like IM151-7 and IM151-8 is only
possible in the operating mode "STEP 7" (integrated).

• Any IO-Link master modules installed in PLCs like IM151-7 and IM151-8 have to be uploaded
individually.

• To configure IO-Link components which are configured via GSD use the menu item "Edit>
Start Device Tool> S7-PCT" from HWConfig. In this case only IO-Link master modules
configured via GSD will be displayed in S7-PCT.

• To configure IO-Link components which are configured via HSP use the menu item "Edit>
Configure IO-Link" from HWConfig. In this case only IO-Link master modules configured via
HSP will be displayed in S7-PCT.

• Use a TCP/IP direct connection to communicate with IO link master modules in PROFINET
IO devices.

• IO-Link master modules in a PROFIBUS-DP station can be reached from S7-PCT even if the
PC with S7-PCT on it is connected via Ethernet/PROFINET. In this case it is required that S7-
CPU or S7-CP/CM module supports the "dataset routing" function. For the list of components
with this function, see the following link:

http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/de/7000978

This function is not available in the standalone mode of S7-PCT.

• Project files generated with S7-PCT V1.0 cannot be processed by S7-PCT V3.4 incl. HF2 and
later. You can continue processing the configurations created with S7-PCT V1.0 in the S7-
PCT V3.4 incl. HF2 by uploading the configuration data from the hardware.

• Projects created with S7-PCT V2.X can be processed with V3.4 incl. HF2. The projects will be
converted into the new format and cannot subsequently be edited with V2.X.

• During the load to device operation in S7-PCT, only the editable parameters of an IO-Link
Device are loaded to devices. The read-only parameters are not loaded.

• Integrated and TCI S7-PCT projects are subject to the project administration and archiving
mechanisms of STEP 7 only if you save them in the recommended default directory within the
STEP 7 project.

• In STEP 7, S7-PCT configurations are not included when copying stations or during station
import/export.

• For project consistency you should not use HW Config to change the settings made with S7-
PCT regarding width of the I/O address range.
• SIMATIC S7-PCT V3.4 incl. HF2 supports IODD V1.0, IODD V1.0.1 and IODDV1.1. Thus you
can import IODDs with version V1.0, V1.0.1 and V1.1.

• At a CP which is directly inserted in a SIMATIC PC Station an IO-Link Master module can be

configured, but S7-PCT cannot be started.

• S7-PCT V3.4 incl. HF2 supports the IO-Link master "CM 4xIO-Link V2.0". This IO-Link master
has the new "Timebased IO" function. But this function is only enabled in S7-PCT when it is
started from TIA Portal V13 or later versions.

• The "firmware update" function in S7-PCT works only in standalone mode. In TCI and
integrated modes this function results in a communication error.

• The "firmware update" function in S7-PCT does not have the dataset routing capability.
Notes on using Communication Cards in PCs/ PGs

CP 5611/ CP 5611 onboard (SIMATIC NET PROFIBUS interface via PCI Bus)

In order to use the CP 5611 card you require a PC or a programming device with PCI bus. You can then
address SIMATIC stations via MPI or PROFIBUS (9.6 Kbps to 12 Mbps).

If you install STEP 7 after the CP has been inserted in the computer, the Plug and Play mechanism enters
the CP 5611 in the Device Manager of the Control Panel\System in "Other Devices". Therefore, the CP is
sometimes not recognized when installing STEP 7.

In such cases, remove the CP 5611 in the Device Manager after installing STEP 7 and reboot your
computer.

Observe the notes in the online help under "Setting the PG/PC Interface."

CP 5512 (SIMATIC NET PROFIBUS interface via PC card)

A PC or a programming device with PC card slot is required to use the CP 5512. You can then address
SIMATIC stations via MPI or PROFIBUS (9.6 Kbps to 12 Mbps).

CP 5711 (SIMATIC NET PROFIBUS interface via USB 2.0)

A PC or a programming device with USB port is required to use the CP 5711. You can then use this port
to address the SIMATIC stations via MPI or PROFIBUS (9.6 Kbps to 12 Mbps).
