7 Complicated Mawsoof Sifah

We will now approach the ‫ م ْوص ْوف ِصفة‬fragment and study more complicated versions.
ُ َ َ
Remember that fundamentally, the ‫ م ْوص ْوف‬and ‫ ِصفة‬must match in all four properties of status,
number, gender, and type.

ٌَْ َ ٌَْ
For example, ‘long beard’ is ‫ِلية ط ِويلة‬.
ِ Notice a few things:

ْ ُ َْ َ
a. The thing being described (‫ )موصوف‬comes before the descriptive word (‫)صفة‬ ِ
ٌَْ ٌَْ َ
b. Both ‫ ِِلية‬and ‫ طوِيلة‬match in status (‫)رفع‬, number (singular), gender (feminine), and type
(common)

َ ُ َ
When studying complicated ‫’م ْوص ْوف ِصفة‬s, it helps to look at each fragment separately. We will
do this by using examples:

1. Long beard of my grandfather

َ َ
a. We can easily recognize that ‘my grandmother’ is an ‫ إِضافة‬fragment and will
ْ ِّ َ
therefore be written as ‫جدي‬.
َ َ
b. We then see that ‘beard of my grandfather’ is also an ‫ إِضافة‬fragment. This will be
ْ ِّ َ ُ َ ْ َ ُ
written as ‫ِلية جدي‬ ِ (remember: the ‫ مضاف‬must be light and have no ‫)ال‬.
َ ُ َُْ َ َ ُ
c. Lastly, ‘long’ is a descriptive word of ‘beard,’ but the ‫)ِلية( مضاف‬ ِ and ‫مضاف إ ِ َْله‬
ْ ِّ َ َ َ
(‫ )جدي‬cannot be separated. Thus, we will insert ‘long’ after the ‫ إِضافة‬fragment; it
ُ َ ْ َّ ْ ِّ َ ُ َ ْ
will then be ‫ِلية جدي الط ِويلة‬. ِ
َُْ ُ َ ْ َّ َ
i. Notice that ‫ ِِلية‬and ‫ الط ِويلة‬are both ‫رفع‬, singular, feminine, and proper.
َُْ
Notice also that ‫ِلية‬ ِ is proper even though it doesn’t have an ‫ال‬. All
َ ُ َ
‫’م ُوص ْوف ِصفة‬s must match in all four properties!
2. The kind messenger of Allah

a. We see that ‘messenger of Allah’ is an is an ‫ إِضافة‬fragment and will therefore be
ُ ُ َ
written as ِ‫رس ْول الل‬.

b. We then see that ‘kind’ is a descriptive word of ‘messenger,’ but the ‫)رس ْول( مضاف‬
َ َ ُ َ َ
and ‫ )اللِ( مضاف إ ِ َْله‬cannot be separated. Thus, we will insert ‘kind’ after the ‫إِضافة‬
ُ ُ َّ ُْ ُ َ
fragment; it will then be ‫الرؤ ْوف‬ ِ‫رسول الل‬.
ُ ُ ُ ُ َ
i. Notice that ‫ َرس ْول‬and ‫ ا َّلرؤ ْوف‬are both ‫رفع‬, singular, masculine, and proper.
3. The messenger of the kind Allah
َ َ
a. We see again that ‘messenger of Allah’ is an is an ‫ إِضافة‬fragment and will
ُ ُ َ
therefore be written as ِ‫رس ْول الل‬.
b. We then see that ‘kind’ is a descriptive word of the word ‘Allah,’ and we will
ُ َّ ُْ ُ
insert ‘kind’ after the word ‘Allah’: ‫الرؤ ْو ِف‬ ِ‫ َرسول الل‬.
ُ َ
i. Notice that the word ِ‫ الل‬and ‫ ا َّلرؤ ْو ِف‬are both ‫جر‬, singular, masculine, and
proper. Remember, because ‘kind’ is describing the word ‘Allah,’ it must
match in all four properties.

Note: Now we can see the importance of ending ‫ حراكت‬in Arabic. By changing a single ‫حركة‬, we

can we change a word from being a ‫ ِصفة‬of the messenger ‫ صىل الل عليه وسلم‬to the ‫ ِصفة‬of Allah
SWT.
