Self Introduction/ Philosophy of Education

My name is Emily Brunson and I am currently enrolled in the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers
College at ASU. I have my Associates of Arts which I obtained from Estrella Mountain
Community College. This will be my third year as a college student as I work on obtaining my
Bachelor's of Education in Secondary Education. I went to high school in the Buckeye area
where I found many influences on my career path I have chosen to pursue.
My main reason for becoming a teacher can be accredited to my high school English teacher,
Mrs. Doud. As my senior English dual enrollment teacher, Mrs. Doud brought a variety of
enthusiasm into her classroom every day. She never once looked at us as simply students in her
class that needed to be passed in order to go on with chasing their dreams, but she saw us all as
individuals worthy of investing time and effort into each and every day. Although I had always
been an honor student, I never had the feeling of being smart enough until I took her class and
she made me feel worthy of possessing the knowledge she so graciously gifted me. I am so
grateful for Mrs. Doud and the impact she had on my life.
My philosophy of education starts with the students that we encounter every day. I believe
that each child has the willingness to learn and grow, it just takes the right person to reach them.
We as teachers have the opportunity every day to change an entire life. Sometimes just by simply
showing up to our job every day. I believe that this type of influence should be worn proudly by
teachers, yet humble enough to never stop learning. My philosophy of education will change
over the years, that I am of certain of. But for now, I believe that we as teachers should respect
our students, always embrace change, and never stop learning for ourselves and our students.
With wanting to become a teacher, I believe the most important part of our job is working
with challenging students, as they are usually the ones who need us the most. Being able to
recognize a student who is acting out as a cry for attention and being there for that child is a huge
part of being a teacher. I have learned that it is so much more than the instruction we give our

2
children, but our attention is what is most needed for some students. Most of our challenging
students have families or live with people who could care less about them, therefore leaving
these students to question their own self-worth. This is where we are teachers step up and are
able to be a constant factor in that child's life. Showing we love, care, and want this child to
succeed can make a world of difference in a child's life. We as teachers have an amazing
opportunity to change someone's life, all it takes is teachers that truly care about their students to
completely change lives. Through the teaching of Dr. Lavoir, Madeline Hunter and Dr. Wong,
we are able to look at the many ways we can impact students lives.

Classroom Layout

Fred Jones once said, “Anything that you do not arrange to your advantage, somebody
else will arrange to their advantage, and it won't be your advantage.” While building my dream
classroom, I found many uses for this quote as I was plotting and placing my furniture and
technology. I found that there are many ways we as teachers are able to manipulate a classroom
to our advantage, as well as set up our students for success. The following list contains my
placement and reasons why as influenced by Fred Jones and Harry Wong.

● Classroom Materials/ Homework Station- My classroom materials will be located on my

homework station as soon as my students enter my classroom so they are able to drop off
their completed homework as soon as they enter my classroom, as well as grab needed
materials for the days' lesson. I have placed this station near my main entrance door to
minimize transition time as well as maximize the productivity of my students.

● Teachers Desk- I have chosen to place my personal desk in the back corner of my
classroom to increase proximity to my students as well as accessibility to their desks at
any given time. Having my desk in the back corner of my classroom also breaks the
barrier in the front of the room from my students and me, therefore allowing me to be
more engaged with them during my lessons.

● Teachers Locked Cabinet- In order to secure personal items as well as important tests and
my students' information, I chose to place my locked cabinet directly behind my desk. I
chose this location because my students will be taught to respect that space as my own,
therefore making it the most secure area to place my locked cabinet.

4
● Bookshelves- I have placed my bookshelves in the opposite back corner of my teacher
desk to hold my classroom set of book and personal collection of books that I will allow
my students to check out and read. I chose this corner so I was able to set up a book nook
in my classroom to encourage my students to read and have a safe place to relax (also
Pinterest had some amazing examples).

● Filing Cabinet- I chose to place my filing cabinet just to the right of my desk to ensure
that any paper I need or my students need I am able to get to quickly and efficiently.
Also, I placed them close to my desk so I am able to keep a close eye on them.

● White Boards- I chose to have two whiteboards in the front of my classroom flanking my
SmartBoard which will also be placed in the front of the room. I put these in the front
because The proximity to my students is more sensible as their desks and chairs are
facing the front. I also have more room for mobility in the front of the room, allowing me
to move and demonstrate during my lessons.

● Student Desks- My desks have been placed in rows of three, with five desks in each row.
Students will be sitting in duo’s, therefore allowing them to quickly partner up when
given group work. This desk arrangement also allows me to have maximum mobility and
proximity to my students at all times.

● Mounted Projector- I chose the middle of the room to place my mounted projector. It will
be fastened to the ceiling so it will not be in the way of my students. This piece of
equipment is very important to me because I want to be able to share my powerpoints,
notes, and images with my students to better involve them in their lessons.

● Trash Can/ Recycle Bin- I chose to place these objects close to my main entrance, as I
know how messy kids are and having these by my door as I stand and greet them will

5
allow them the proximity to toss their trash or gum in the trash can before entering my
classroom.

● Bulletin Board- My bulletin board will be on the left-hand side of my students' desk. I
chose to place it here and not in the front of my room because I want to have an exciting
and colorful bulletin board, which may be distracting for some students, so placing this
object off to the side minimizes this possibility. Having a bulletin board is important to
me because I want my students to be aware of all the resources offered to them, as well as
the happenings in their community.

● Computer Station- In my dream classroom, my new MacBooks will be located in the

back of the room next to my desk. These computers will be available to my students for
research, reports, and assignments. Having these computers is important to my classroom
because I understand that not all students have access to this technology, and I want to be
able to provide that for them as well as teach them how to use it properly.

● Reading Nook Couch- In my reading nook, I plan to have a very comfortable couch for
my students to relax and read on. I placed this next to my two bookshelves to promote
reading and relaxation in the classroom, as well as have the proximity to my desk, as we
all know, our students always need our supervision.

● Document Camera- My document camera will reside on my desk so I am able to take

notes along with my students. It is important for me to have the document camera on my
desk because I want to be able to take notes just as my students are so we are all going at
the same pace, and also to protect my camera from damage.

● SmartBoard- My SmartBoard will be located in the front of my classroom in between my

two whiteboards. I want this to be the main focus of attention in front of my room

6
because I think it is a wonderful tool to help enhance lessons and allow students to
participate.

● Handicap Accommodation- Next to my computer station I will have a table that will be
able to accommodate any handicapped student that enters my classroom. As well as the
large rows I will make with my desk for maximum mobility.

Classroom Procedures

● Beginning Class

○ I will be greeting students out front of the door entering the classroom every
morning. I plan to have a personalized handshake with each of my students at
least by mid-semester.
○ Students will enter the classroom in an orderly manner as they drop off their
homework in the homework station located in the front of the room, they will then
grab all materials needed for the class period in the material cabinet located
directly next to the homework station
○ Once homework is turned in, students will be verbally and visually assigned their
morning bellringer to begin class exactly on time to ensure consistency and
conscious use of instruction time.

● Ending Class
○ Students will be assigned a closer task as their “ticket out the door”
○ Prior to the exiting of the classroom by students, everyone will be held
accountable for the cleanliness of their area.
○ Dismissal will be signaled by me through the phrase, ”Class is dismissed.” Time
will be kept with a clock on my desk.
● Transitions Between Activities
○ Students desk will be placed in a fashion that allows them maximum proximity
and mobility when moving into group work.
○ Students will be placed in pairs per the seating chart, which will stagger students
based on content mastery levels.
● Collecting Homework

10
○ With my classroom setup, I took into consideration the fashion in which I want to
collect work from my students. As my students' desks are set in rows with one
main walkway between seats, I will have my students calmly pass their papers
into the middle row as I walk through and collect.
● Handing Back Student Work
○ I will hand my students back their timely and concisely graded work by passing
back their neatly stacked papers down the rows, the same way I collected them in
the first place.
● Materials for Lesson
○ I will have my materials cabinet placed by the door so that students are able to
grab needed material before taking their seats.
○ I will stand at the door and announce the days' needed materials, there will also be
a reminder on the projector for students to view.
● Student Absences
○ In the front of the classroom, there will be a station for late and missed work for
students to pick up when absent.
○ However many days the student is absent is the number of days allowed to finish
homework.
● Late Work
○ Students will be allowed until Thursday of each week to hand in any late
assignments.
○ My homework station will include a box for late work that will be placed in the
back before Friday morning.
● Communicating with Parents
○ I will obtain every parent's email at the beginning of the year and send weekly
email blasts about the class context and what we are covering in class, as well as
due dates of coursework.
○ I will readily have my work email as well as phone number available to parents
through my schools' website.

11
○ Conferences are always available per the parents' request.
● Consideration of Diverse Learners
○ For my students who are in need of an instructional assistant or learn in a different
way than my other students, I will provide many resources around my classroom
to assist their needs.
○ Written, verbal, and visual lessons will be offered to students if needed. Along
with the pairing system I will have for the seating chart, which will allow students
to have a built-in helper for understanding content.
○ I will also have a designated note taker, who will be able to share notes with
students if the lesson is moving too fast or if the student falls behind.
○ Diverse learners will have every opportunity needed to succeed in my classroom
through instructional support, student support, and accessibility.

● Grading and recording student work

○ As a future English teacher, I have made the personal decision to have all of my
future students turn their essays on Friday so I am able to have the weekend to
grade them and give them feedback.
○ I will use a point system that allows for me to give the students 3 points as soon
as they turn their work into me, which will work as a placeholder of their grade,
so parents are able to view their child's grade and see that it has been turned in.
○ I will set up a spreadsheet in Google Docs that I will use to record all of my
students work, allowing me to edit and share their records with their parents in an
up to date time.

Classroom Procedures Summary

In my classroom, I will teach my procedures to my students that I have come up with

under the influence of the teachings from Dr. Harry Wong and Dr. Fred Jones. My students and I
will hold each other accountable for our following of the classroom procedures. Using the steps
to explain, rehearse, and reinforce will allow my students plenty of opportunities to be successful
in following the classroom procedures.

Classroom Rules and Consequences

In order to maintain a well-managed classroom, there should be clear rules and

expectations stated so students are able to understand what behavior is expected of them in the
classroom. According to the teachings of Dr. Harry Wong, Dr. Richard Lavoie, along with
Madeline Hunter, the best way to ensure classroom management is to state five positively
worded and meaningful rules to be followed within the classroom. My five chosen rules will be
taught, not told, to my students on the first day of class along with the consequences to the rules.
A large part of my classroom environment will focus on respect and idea sharing, such as my
five rules and consequences will reflect.

Classroom Rules:
1. One person speaks at a time with school appropriate word choice.
2. Students will keep an open mind during discussions.
3. Students will respect the opinion of others.
4. Students will remain seated in assigned seats unless instructed otherwise.
5. Students will be dismissed by the teacher when they hear, “Class is dismissed.”

Classroom Consequences

13
Classroom consequences for the rules will follow due process when broken. These
consequences will be concise, easy to follow, and consistent. Classroom consequences will apply
directly to the rules they follow, as well as the district and school policies. These consequences
will take into consideration the needs of any diverse learner within the classroom.

Consequences:

1. First Offence- Warning/ after class conference

2. Second Offence- Phone call home
3. Third Offence- Detention
4. Fourth Offence- Administrative office referral

** Despite due process, the teacher reserves the right to skip steps due to the severity of
offense**

Summary

After researching and reviewing the work of Dr. Fred Jones, Dr. Harry Wong, Dr.
Richard Levoie, and Madeline Hunter, I have been able to construct an efficient and concise
classroom management plan that I will be able to utilize once I am in my own classroom.
Through my classroom layout, classroom procedures, rules and consequences I have set my
classroom and students up for success. My room is structured in a way that allows me to have
maximum proximity and mobility, this also allows students to easily collaborate with each other
during appropriate times. Giving my students the best opportunity to succeed in their academic
career is my main focus of this classroom management plan. By creating a safe and predictable
environment for my students will allow them to flourish, therefore allowing me to be a
successful teacher for these students.
