Start with the 10 seconds of music “Run by Leona Lewis” with the video of lights. Then it shows
the slide of the title of the video- interactive word walls.
Welcome everyone, you can call me Nicky, today, I am going to introduce you the idea of
interactive word walls. You may ask, we have word walls already, why we need to use this one?
Before I answer this question, I want to tell you what interactive word walls are.
Flash to the examples of traditional interactive word walls
The traditional word walls are like this and this, they are a list of vocabulary displayed
somewhere in a classroom. They don’t have any meanings, connections or explanations. Most
students and teachers will even forget this. So that is why we are having this new kind of word
walls-interactive word walls.
Flash to the examples of interactive word walls
As we can see from those two examples, there are huge differences between two kinds of word
walls. First, the interactive one organizes words and connect with each other. This connection
can help students understand each word and be able to use some of them in sentences. Second, it
has the visual artifacts. The interactive one includes the pictures or photographs next to each
word as visual examples. It can definitely help students connect real lives with words and
memorize them better.

So now, we know the difference between two kinds of walls, I will answer the question I
mentioned earlier- why should we use it? 1. During the lesson, students are able to look at the
wall, so they can participate in classroom activities. 2.Because they are able to practice, students
can analyze and interpret data for constructing explanations. 3. Especially for ELLs, It benefits
them most when vocabulary instruction is contextually rich and cognitively demanding. 4.With
illustrated connection and visual supports, students can gain the deeper understanding and
strengthened comprehension.

Now, the exciting part- we need to learn how to use it. There are several steps.
1. Look over the teaching materials to find possible words.
2. Have a team meeting with other teachers to decide the list of words.
3. Sketch the frame of the word walls
4. Find the visual examples, like images or photographs for each word.
5. Either teachers connect each word and picture together or students create one at the end
of a unit.
6. last, hang the word walls up in the classroom or in the hallway.

Now, I hope you understand the concept of interactive word walls better. Implementing this tool
in the classroom can help students most, especially ELLs. I suggest teachers have this on the list
of their planning considerations and search online for more examples. Thanks!
