A REVIEW ON ASSESSMENT OF RAILWAY NOISE IN LUCKNOW

ABSTRACT
To assess the impact of noise pollution studies were conducted on railway station platforms.
The sound pressure level (SPL) was measured on kalupur railway station of Gujarat and
sampling of noise was done for 8 hours on ticket collection counter and it showed that SPL
on platforms exceeded the day time exposure limit. Further loud speakers and Horns
produced noise which was high pitched. Study of unconventional railway noises generated
from maneuvering, loading and unloading, braking, whistles was done in pisa, Italy along
with a survey of 119 people ranging between the age of 35 and 70 and the residents in the
area living for at least 5 years. The unconventional noise was measured because these types
of noises are generally neglected in the railway noise modeling. The various railway noise
modeling approaches i.e The interim railway noise modelling method (RMR) and Schall 03
which is a german national method that is widely used in croatian noise protection practice.
The traffic noise modelling in the vicinity of Ivanic Grad Railway station was done by using
the above two methods in Croatia. Studies revealed that the interim method does not meet the
local conditions of these countries and therefore results vary from the field measurements.
Furthermore two different scenarios were also considered for assessment of noise. In the first
scenario vehicle acceleration and deceleration were considered and in other it was neglected.
The results showed that the noise level determined by RMR method was lower than that of
field measurements and Schall 03 noise modeling provides more accurate results.
