Adverbs: Adjective + ly

A formação da maioria
dos advérbios é feita acrescentando
-ly a um adjetivo.

Some spelling rules:

“-le” changes to “-ly” ➞ gentle gently
“-y” changes to “-ily” ➞ easy easily
“-ic” add “-ally” ➞ automatic automatically
“-ue” changes to “-uly” ➞ true truly
“-ll” just add “-y” ➞ full fully

Adverbs of frequency

Adverb of frequency Frequency Example

always 100% I always go to bed before 11pm.

usually 90% I usually have cereal for breakfast.
often / frequently 70% I often surf the Internet.
sometimes 50% I sometimes forget my wife's birthday.
never / ever 0% I never swim in the sea.

Nota: Utiliza-se o advérbio never com o verbo na forma afirmativa para veicular
a ideia de negação.
e.g. “I never go to school on foot.”
Quando pretendemos ser mais específicos acerca da frequência de algum
acontecimento utilizamos as seguintes expressões de frequência:
* every day – once a month – twice a year – four times a day – every other week
Os advérbios colocam-se:
antes do verbo principal: I always go to school on foot.
depois do verbo to be: I’m never late for school.

Adverbs of time

Os advérbios de tempo dizem-nos quando algo aconteceu.

Eles situam um determinado acontecimento no tempo.

Para nos referirmos ao passado (past): yesterday, the day before, ago, last week / month / year /
when
Para nos referirmos ao presente (present) : today, now, still, yet, while, when
Para nos referirmos ao futuro (future): soon, next week/month/year, in 2 days,
tomorrow, the day after tomorrow
