Causes deforestation Indonesia

Deforestation is a permanent destruction of forests. Deforestation activity is a deforestation activity

in an area where the forest land is converted to non-forest area. For examples of deforestation
include conversion of forests to farms or for development purposes.

Among the causes of deforestation in Indonesia is for agricultural purposes. Deforestation

activities are undertaken to facilitate the development of a large-scale agricultural industry
(Braithwaite, 1996). This is true to cover the production of several major commodities such as
palm oil for marketing purposes internationally. As we know, Indonesia is the world's largest palm
oil exporter. The forest area in Indonesia is explored for the purpose of oil palm plantation. Palm
trees can produce fruit for more than 30 years, and thus provide employment opportunities to poor
rural communities. The production of palm oil is very lucrative, largely due to the fact that this
tropical tree produces more oil per hectare than any other major oil seeds (Block, n.d.). Because
of this, many deforestation has occurred to open more oil palm estates especially in rural areas.

Another cause of deforestation is that logging is illegal or not (Solinge, 2014)Forest

logging activities are carried out to obtain timber to meet the demand of timber as raw materials
for highly-demand paper or wood products. Additionally, the timber industry that promises a
lucrative return makes this matter more serious. Lack of law enforcement from authorities makes
illegal logging more rampant and extreme. Illegal logging using clean logging and illegal logging
causes many adverse effects on ecosystems. Not only that, logging also destroyed the bottom of
the tree and the construction of rats to transport logs also left the impact of forest.

Dealing also applies to developmental factors. The population growth that occurs every
year causes infrastructure facilities to be provided to accommodate the increase. Existing urban
areas are too crowded and forest areas need to be built to create roads, housing and new urban
planning. The highway that provides land transportation to facilitate and shorten the journey is
built on the reduced forest area (Nasa Earth Observatory, n.d.). Government policies aiming to
encourage more foreign tourists to come to Indonesia cause forest areas to be converted into resorts
or resorts as well as airport constructions that require extensive space.
