Lesson Plan

Soomi Park

Objective: Students will develop a deeper understanding of the story’s plot, theme, and
symbols. They will also identify literary devices used in the chapter.

Materials: Book (The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies), reading packet, Pencil, Device (with
Word document copy of the reading packet)

Introduction - 10 minutes – Students meet in their literature circles with the teacher. Teacher
calls on random students to help summarize what has happened so far in the book. Students
discuss how the characters change as the story progresses, what themes they are noticing in
the book, and any symbolism they recognize.

Body - 30 minutes – Students popcorn read the chapter (Chapter 8 – pg. 101-121) as teacher
stops periodically to ask questions about what is happening in the chapter. Students are called
on at random to help answer questions about the current chapter. Students will also be called
on to make connections from this chapter to chapters in the past.

Closure - 10 minutes – Teacher and students summarize what happened in the chapter, what
the “big picture” was, and how it affects the characters in the book. Students also discuss any
new ideas or storylines that were introduced and how it affects the overall plot of the book. At
the end of the literature circle, students can volunteer to suggest what might happen in the
book in the weeks ahead.

Summative Assessment - 15 minutes – Students work independently or in pairs either with

paper and pencil or on their devices to answer reading comprehension questions. Assessment
will include questions about today’s reading, symbolism, the story’s overall storyline and plot,
and the theme of the book. After students have had a chance to answer the questions, class will
have a discussion about each of the questions to further discuss the details of the chapter.
Teacher will collect reading packets to review each students’ response and to grade their
packets.
