Q1 [10 Marks]

a) What is total energy? Identify the different forms of energy that

constitute the total energy.

b) What is a Newtonian fluid? Is water a Newtonian fluid?

c) What is the definition of a streakline? How do streaklines differ

from streamlines?

d) In the application of the momentum equation, explain why we can

usually disregard the atmospheric pressure and work with gage
pressures only.

The velocity field V  axi  byj , where a=b= 1 s-1, can be interpreted to represent
flow in a corner. Find an equation for the flow streamlines. Is there any stagnation point for
this flow field, if so where is it?

A gasoline line is connected to a pressure gage through a double-U

manometer, as shown in Fig. Q3. If the reading of the pressure gage is
370 kPa, determine the gage pressure of the gasoline line.

Q4 [20 Marks]

Consider fully developed axisymmetric Poiseuille flow—flow in a round pipe of radius R

(diameter D =2R), with a forced pressure gradient dP/dx driving the flow as illustrated in
Fig. Q4. (dP/dx is constant and negative.) The flow is steady, incompressible, and
axisymmetric about the x-axis. The velocity components are given by

where  is the fluid’s viscosity. Is this flow rotational or irrotational? If it is rotational,

calculate the vorticity component in the circumferential ( ) direction and discuss the sign
of the rotation.

Q5 [30 Marks]

Water flows steadily through the reducing elbow shown in Fig. Q5. The elbow is smooth
and short, and the flow accelerates, so the effect of friction is small. The volume flow rate
is Q= 1.27 L/s. the elbow is in a horizontal plane. a) Estimate the gage pressure at section
1. b) Select a suitable control volume for the problem and calculate the x-component of the
force exerted by reducing elbow on the supply pipe.
