fluidyn - AVNOISE

Simulation of noise pollution due to airplanes

Aircraft Representation by fluidyn - AVNOISE

fluidyn - AVNOISE has been developed in collaboration with the Research and Development Team
of the CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research) Lab at Ecole Centrale Paris and with the
financial aid of ADEME (Ministry of Environment and Energy). The validation has been done in
collaboration with SNECMA Motors.

fluidyn - AVNOISE considers the aircraft as a source of anisotropic radiation whose amplitude
depends on the direction (anisotropic sources). In fact, the software currently in use like INM
consider the airplane as a point source emitting the same radiation in all directions. However, the
noise emissions from the front, side and rear of the airplane are different and depend on the motor
elements and the reflecting surfaces of the cockpit. The airplane front receives the radiation from
the blowers and the compressors while the rear receives the radiation from the turbines and air jets.
In fact, many complex components are involved in the generation of airplane noise.

fluidyn – AVNOISE uses the acoustic radiation

measurements of a motor done on a test bench. These are
then used to create a virtual source representing a radiation
(frequencies, amplitudes, favorable directions) identical to
the radiation emitted by a real motor. An equivalent source
will be generated for each type of motor and these sources
are integrated in the aircraft (twin engine aircraft, four-
engined aircraft).

The unit thus created (motor and reflecting surfaces, wings and cockpit) is modeled by
the acoustic finite elements method to create an equivalent source with the acoustic simulation
software fluidyn – dB. The aircraft can be placed near an airport platform to calculate its noise
impact by the ray emission or integration function method.

The design of the airplane form is done by simplifying the external surfaces obtained from CAD
files. The noise propagation software fluidyn - dB models the topography in 3 dimensions. It uses
either the DXF files obtained from a GIS software or directly from a map representing topographical
curves and from a site plan with building heights data. The simulation results are also represented on
the site plan.

The technology used in fluidyn - AVNOISE for

noise propagation is similar to the one used in
dB. However the most important innovation is
the 3D numerical modeling of the airplane. The
trajectory of the airplane can be determined with
respect to its directional sound impact. This
method however does not annul the knowledge
available in the current available software and the
validation of the measurements but reinforces the
point and non - averaged impact with respect to
time.
