Topic: Diversidad sexual y discriminación

Introduction

• Read the following situations and answer “always, usually, often, hardly ever,
or never”. After that, discuss with your friends about it and make a list of the
things that caught your attention.

• Definitions:

Discrimination implies a behavior of contempt towards a person or group,


sustained by prejudice and social stereotypes.
Prejudices are previous judgments; consist in criticizing a person or group
positively or negatively without having enough elements to do it.
Stereotypes are social characteristics that are attributed to a whole group of
people. They are built from the simplification and generalization of an aspect

• We reflect on discrimination based on sexual orientation based on
testimonies
After the general reading of the testimonies, we propose that the groups read them
following this analysis criteria:

a. The different ways in which discrimination based on sexual orientation can be


expressed.
b. The different feelings associated with the different ways of living sexuality.
c. The different attitudes that appear when a person makes explicit that he lives an
orientation which is not Heterosexual.
d. The role of colleagues, friends, families, teachers facing situations of discrimination for
sexual orientation.

Extra activities:

Make different questions about sexual discrimination, and then ask different
students and teachers from your schoo, and then elaborate the following chart:
• Think about alternatives to fight against sexual prejudice and discrimination,
and bring them for the “feria de ciencias”.
• Read the following biography, and reflect about how times have changed
since Alan Turing’s period.
Alan Turing: True to Himself
Alan Turing (1912-1954) was an accomplished British
mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst, philosopher,
physicist, and biologist. He is often referred to as the
father of the modern day computer and is credited
with breaking the Nazi Enigma Code. WWII British
cryptographer Captain Jerry Roberts is quoted as
saying, “Without him – we would have lost the war.”
Soon after the end of the war, the British government awarded Turing with the
Order of the British Empire for his contributions.
Turing was also openly gay and in the early 1950s was arrested and punished
for his sexual orientation by the same government he served.
From his earliest days in school to his enduring legacy, Turing faced many
challenges, yet, stayed true to himself by pursing his love of science and
living an open, honest life.
True to Himself provides secondary educators with student handouts,
suggested discussion questions, extension ideas and additional resources to
help students learn more about this extraordinary man and the context in
which he lived.
