5E Lesson Plan

(Solving Systems of Linear Equations: Graphing Method)

Teacher: Stephanie M. Turner

Date: November 26 - November 28

Subject area/course/grade level: Algebra I, Grade 9

Materials:
❏ Graphing paper
❏ Colored pencils
❏ Rulers
❏ Chromebook or mobile device

Standards (State and ISTE Standards for Students):

20 ) Solve systems of linear equations exactly and approximately (e.g., with
graphs), focusing on pairs of linear equations in two variables. [A-REI6]
1c.) Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves
their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways. (ISTE)

Objectives:
❏Graph a system of linear equations in two variables with and without
technology to find the solution to the system.

❏Solve a system by graphing the system on the same coordinate grid and
determine the point(s) that satisfies all members of the system.

Differentiation Strategies:
❏ Students will work in small groups and receive one-to-one instruction
from the teacher.
❏ Students will be given worked examples on how to use methods to solve
problems.
❏ Students will use available graphing calculator to graph systems of
equations and linear equations.
❏ Students can use Flipgrid to provide a detailed explanation of each
process orally.
ENGAGEMENT:
Here is your chance to catch the student’s attention. To prepare the students for the
lesson play the short video and allow the students a few minutes to answer the
questions.

EXPLORATION:
Performance Task- Cell Phone Plan
Students will investigate a scenario involving two cell phone plans that will introduce
them to the concept of solving systems of equations. They will use estimation
techniques to decide which plan is best. Students will model the cost for two cell
phone plans using linear functions, graph the functions, and find the intersection of
the two functions.

Assessment: Rubric is included in the performance task.

EXPLANATION:
In this presentation, we will explore graphing systems of equations without
technology. Each student will use a e-chart graphic organizer for note taking as they
follow the presentation.

ELABORATION:
Individual Assignment
Students will use Adobe Spark to create a poster about their knowledge of systems of
equations. The poster should include any vocabulary learned throughout the lesson
as well as the process to graphing and finding solutions to a system of equations.

EVALUATION:

Each student will complete the performance task to assess their understanding and
evaluate how close they have come to meeting the objectives of the lesson.

Students will play a quick five question Kahoot for an assessment. The Kahoot is in
the survey style so that students will maintain autonomy and you can discuss their
answer choices.
