EDEL 302 – Paint Assignment

Unit Topic: Weather & Climate Lesson Topic: The 5 Major Types of Biomes
KAS Standard:
3-ESS2-2. Obtain and combine information to describe climates in different regions of the world.
Learning Target: I can gather information on the major biomes of the world and create a
pictorial display of those regions.
Activity:
Students will be introduced to the different biomes around the world. They will be asked to use
the following website (http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/glossary/gloss5/biome/) to gather
information on each of the different biomes around the world. In this information they should
include any sub-divisions in the biome, any key features of the region, the temperature/climate of
the region, the annual amount of precipitation, and any other information that they felt was
important or interesting. While exploring this site they will have a guided worksheet (featured
below) to complete to help them organize their information about the biomes. This will be a very
handy tool for them to study from. Once they have completed to worksheet they will then be
asked to use paint to create their own pictures to display what each biome looks like.
Reflection:
I found this activity to be very fun and informational. Throughout this activity I am allowing my
students the opportunity to use technology to gather information and also to create a display of
each biome. By allowing the students to create a display of each biome they learned about, I am
letting them use their creativity to produce a piece that is completely individual even though they
all studied the exact same material. Some of the drawings may be similar but they will all reflect
the things that each student found important when they were reading about a particular biome. It
allows them to think about the small details that make up a specific biome and include them in
their display. This activity could be adapted to other grades and subject areas by sampling
changing the topic or finding more difficult concepts/materials. To adapt it to higher grades you
could continue with the science part of it just make it a concept that you have been covering in
class or want your students to learn about. To adapt it to different subject areas you would just
change the subject and material but use the same basic format.
