Lesson Title: Biomes of the World

1. Learning Target(s)/Objectives (PGES 1C): List the lesson learning target(s)/objective(s)

[connect each target/objective to the appropriate state curriculum/content area
standards]

R.3.5. – Use text features and search tools (e.g., key words, sidebars, hyperlinks) to locate
information relevant to the given topic efficiently.
I can efficiently gather information on the major biomes of the world by navigating a
given website.

3-ESS2-2. Obtain and combine information to describe climates in different regions of the
world.
I can obtain and combine information from The World’s Biomes Website, the
Multimedia Presentation, and the PowerPoint to describe the climate in different regions
of the world.

2. Pre-assessment (PGES 1F): Describe the pre-assessment(s) used to establish students’ baseline
knowledge and skills for this lesson.

Students use chrome books in their classrooms to find information, get on interactive education
programs, and to complete assignments or take assessments. We have recently been discussing the
climate and the different kinds there are.

3. Formative Assessment (PGES 1F): Describe the formative assessment(s) to be used to measure
student progress during this lesson.

Learning Target #1: I can efficiently gather information on the major biomes of the world by
navigating a given website.

- The formative assessment I will be using for this learning target is a five question quiz about the
biomes. The students will be given a word bank of 8 words to use to answer the questions.

Learning Target #2: I can obtain and combine information from The World’s Biomes Website, the
multimedia presentation, and the PowerPoint to describe the climate in different regions of the world.
- The formative assessment I will use for this learning target is to have each student make their
own mini-poster over a biome of their choice.
4. Resources (PGES 1D): Identify the resources including appropriate technology needed for the
lesson.

Materials:
- Device with internet access (Chromebook, IPad, Desktop, etc.)
- Knowledge of how to navigate any given website
- Intro to Biomes multimedia presentation
- The 5 Major Biomes of the World PowerPoint
- Biomes Worksheet
- Biomes Formative Assessment
- 8.5” x 11” printer paper
- Coloring utensil of your choice

5. Lesson Procedures (PGES 1E): Describe the sequence in which the differentiated
strategies/activities and/or assessments will be used to engage your students and facilitate
attainment of the lesson objective(s) and promote higher order thinking. (Use ordinal numbers,
with 1 being the hook, and the last number being the closing). Set it out like this:

Item Description (be specific; include actual questions and information) Time
#
1. Introduce the topic today by showing them the multimedia presentation 3 minutes
on biomes. This will allow them to get focused on what we will be
discussing. Have them make some notes about things they saw or read
during the presentation.

2. Once they have seen the presentation have them make some predications 5 minutes
about what they will be learning:
- What do you think a biome is?
- What do you think makes biomes different from one another?
- Based on what you saw in the multimedia presentation what are
some guesses about what some of the biomes are?

3. Now that they have made their predictions begin the lesson with the 10 minutes
PowerPoint presentation. Allow them to be interactive during the
presentation. Let them read the slides and describe what the pictures are
depicting.

4. Pass out the worksheet to them. Explain to them the directions and what 20 minutes
is expected of them. This can also be found in the document itself.
Have them begin by skimming over the document and making sure that
they don’t have any more questions about what they are doing. They will
be working in groups of five during this activity. Make sure to emphasize
to them that each group member needs to fill in one of the column for
one of the biomes and then share it with the rest of their group members.
This allows each student to be responsible for a specific part of the
worksheet and encourages participation and working together.

5. Formative Assessment #1: The formative assessment I will be using for 5 minutes
this learning target is a five question quiz about the biomes.

- Which biome is mostly icy and cold? What kinds of animals live
there?
- Which biome is dominated by grasses?
- Which biome is mostly hot and dry and has very few plants that
can grow there?
- I am in a biome with LOTS of trees and I see deer and bears.
What biome am I in?
- Humans cannot breathe in this biome. There are fish, sea turtles,
and whales. What biome is this?

The students will be given a word bank of 8 words to use to answer the
questions. This assessment will allow me to see which concepts they
were able to grasp better than others.

6. Brain Break Time!! 2 minutes

Allow students to get up, stretch, move around, dance, etc. This keeps
them from getting restless and helps them get all of that excess energy
out before we begin the next part of the lesson.

7. Creation Time/ Formative #2: 12 minutes

Students will be combining the information they learned from the
multimedia presentation, powerpoint, and worksheet to create a poster
about a biome of their choice. Their poster should include information
from all 3 of these sources and any images they would like to draw to
represent it. I will have a model to show them. These will be graded
based on a rubric making sure that all of the necessary requirements have
been included.

8. Closing: 3 minutes
This time will be for students to wrap up what they are doing and for us
to summarize what they learned today. It will also be time for them to
point of things they are still confused about or would like to know more
about.

Add as many numbers as necessary. Be VERY specific.

a. List whole class strategies.

- Lecture to students from PowerPoint but encourage interaction from them.
- Discussion during out opening and encourage throughout the lesson.
- Teacher demonstration of what their posters should look like and include.
- Providing direction for all tasks required of them throughout the lesson.
- Prompt students to ask questions and think critically.
b. List accommodations and modifications, (e.g. for IEP, Gifted, ELL, and other needs)

- For students who finish early I will encourage them to double check their work. Once
they have done that I will ask them to add more to it or allow them to help others who
are struggling (except on assessments/quizzes).
- For students who take a long time to do a task I will encourage them work at a faster
pace but will make sure to allow them all of the time that they need. I understand that
when students feel rushed that they are not able to do their best work. I will also try to
help them whatever they are struggling with or allow another student to do so.
- For the students who already know the content I would allow them time to share their
expertise with the class and possibly help teach it to other students. I would also
encourage them to help others in the learning process, especially students who are
struggling to grasp the concept.
- For students with disabilities or anything else that might hinder the learning process I
will allow them to work with others or myself or an aid will specifically sit down and
help them. I will also allow them to use any kinds of helpful technology to allow them
to learn to the best of their abilities.

6. Reflection: (I am not sure how to answer these since we did not teach the lesson)

1. What were the challenges associated with planning and teaching your lesson?
The challenges associated with planning and teaching my lesson were that I found the directions
to be very unclear and make it hard for me to know what was expected of me. There are always
little tweaks to be made after or during the lesson because you learn what is going to be most
beneficial for your students.
2. How did you overcome these challenges?
I did what I believed that the directions were describing to the best of my ability.
3. What did you learn from the feedback from the students? From the teacher?
N/A
4. If you were to teach this lesson again, what changes or augmentations might you make and
why?
N/A
