Calibration and test

Before delivery of the unit all of the transducers were
calibrated by ANDROMEDA.
In order to achieve maximum accuracy, the trans-
ducers can be recalibrated. Linear transducers are
calibrated with two known physical values. HELIX
stores the corresponding values for internal conver-
sion. The more accurate the calibration, the more
exact the measurement results. Transducers with
linear working range include pressure transducers,
uroflow transducers and volume transducers.

selection item Calibration.

Mark Vura with the slider on the

right-hand side of the screen.

Define a zero point with the funnel

empty and press the symbol 0 ml.

Fill the funnel with a weight (1000

ml in this example). Calibrate the
value by pressing on the symbol
1000 ml.

A message appears on the screen: Calibration

OK!
Fig. 5: Calibrate Vura
If the message Calibration unsuccessful!
Appears, check that the plugs are all correctly fitted.
Repeat the calibration steps from the zero point setting.
If the fault message continues to appear, the device is defective. Please contact Techni-
cal Support.
Note: It is also possible to achieve accurate results using media other than water (e.g. contrast
medium). In this case carry out the calibration with 1000 ml of the infusion medium you
wish to use.

Test
Start an uroflow measurement.

Set the channels, if necessary,

with the funnel empty, to zero.

Fill the funnel with a weight (1000

ml in this example).

The display must indicate 1000 ml. The error should be less than 1 %.
In order to measure the linearity, repeat the test procedure (from zero setting) with
500 g or 500 ml.
The deviation should be less than 1 %.
Note: ANDROMEDA states a relative error of less than 1 %. A properly calibrated device,
however, offers much greater accuracy (rel. error less than 0.2 %).

HELIX – Service Manual Calibration and test

Test
Start a cystometry measurement.
Set Vinf at zero with a load of 1 kg or 1000 ml.
Remove the 1 kg weight.
The error should be less than 1 % (at 1000 ml ±10 ml).
To measure the linearity, repeat the test procedure (from zero setting) with 3 kg or
3000 ml.
The error should be less than 1 % (at 3000 ml less than ±30 ml).
Note: ANDROMEDA states a relative error of less than 1 %. A properly calibrated device,
however, offers much greater accuracy (rel. error less than 0.2 %).

Pump

Calibrating the pump

The pump can be calibrated either automatically, using a previously calibrated volume
transducer, or using the fixed conveyance quantities in a measuring beaker of 100 or
200 ml.

Configuration
HELIX
A bottle or a bag with water connected to a pump tube set.
A measurement beaker; for calibration without a volume transducer the beaker should
have very accurate level marks.

Calibration with volume transducer (recommended)

Select the H2O pump with the slider.
Set the most-used infusion rate.
Ventilate the pump tube.
Start the pump from the calibration menu and allow it to
run for 2 minutes.
Stop the pump from the calibration menu.
A message appears on the screen: Calibration OK!
If the message Calibration unsuccessful! appears, check
that the plugs are all correctly fitted and repeat the cali-
bration steps from the start of pumping.
If the fault message continues to appear, the device is
defective. Please contact Technical Support.
Note: You will achieve the greatest accuracy for the infusion rate Fig. 9: Calibrate the pump

if you
1. calibrate with the most-used infusion rate,
2. calibrate using the same water bottle (or bag) that you always use.

Calibration without volume transducer

Press Setup, then the selection item Calibration.
Select pump.
Set the most-used infusion rate.
Ventilate the pump tube.
Start the pump from the calibration menu and allow it to run until 200 ml has
collected in the measurement beaker.
Stop the pump from the calibration menu.
A message appears on the screen: Calibration OK!
If the message Calibration unsuccessful! appears, check that the plugs are all cor-
rectly fitted and repeat the calibration steps from the start of pumping.
If the fault message continues to appear, the device is defective. Please contact
Technical Support

Note: You will achieve the greatest accuracy for the infusion rate if you
1. calibrate with the most-used infusion rate,
2. calibrate using the same water bottle (or bag) that you always use and
3. if the markings on the measurement beaker are very precise.

72 03.11.2016 ANDROMEDA
HELIX – Service Manual Calibration and test

Test
Start a cystometry measurement.
Set Vinf at zero with the bottle or bag attached.
Set the infusion rate at 100 ml.
Start the pump and let it run for 2 minutes. Then stop the pump.
Check the Vinf- value in the display.
The relative error should be less than 5 % (200 ml ±10 ml).
Note: ANDROMEDA states a relative error of less than 5 %. A properly calibrated device,
however, offers much greater accuracy (rel. error less than 0.2 %).

Pressure transducer

Configuration
HELIX
A bottle or bag with water, connected to a transducer tube set
A pressure transducer connected to the transducer tube set
A pressure transmission tube connected to the pressure transducer
A ruler (20 cm) to measure the height of the water column

Fig. 10: Configuration for the calibration of the pressure transducers

ANDROMEDA 03.11.2016 73
HELIX – Service Manual Calibration and test

Calibration
The calibration procedure is shown for one pressure channel (Pves). All of the other
pressure channels are calibrated in the same way. The following pressure channels are
allocated to the measurement channels in the calibration menu:

Open the calibration menu

and select Pves.

Fill the pressure transducer

with water. The water-filled
tube must not have any air
bubbles.

Place the water level of the

tube at the height 0 cm and
calibrate at 0 cmH2O.

Place the water level of the

tube at the height 20 cm
and calibrate at 20 cmH2O.

A message appears: Calibration OK!

If the error message Calibration unsuccessful! appears, Fig. 11: Calibrate pressure channels
check that the plugs are fitted correctly.
Repeat the calibration steps from the start of pumping.
If the error message continues to appear, the device is defective. Please consult
Technical Support.
Repeat the calibration steps as of water level 0 cm.
If the error message continues to appear, the device is defective. Please contact
Technical Support.
Now: The calibration using a water column is very exact
1. if the measurement tube does not contain any air bubbles,
2. if the water column is very precisely aligned with the ruler.
For even greater accuracy, HELIX also offers the option of calibrating with water columns
of 50 or 100 cmH2O. Calibration with 20 cm is somewhat simpler, however.

74 03.11.2016 ANDROMEDA
HELIX – Service Manual Calibration and test

Test
An example of the test procedure is given here for one channel (Pves). The other pres-
sure channels are tested in the same way. The following table shows which pressure
channels are used in which measurement programs.

Start a cystometry measurement.

Position the water column at 0 cm

ruler height and set the pressure
channel Pves at zero.

Position the water column at 20 cm The relative error is

ruler height and check the value for less than 1%,
Pves in the display. 20 cmH2O ±0,2 cm
Position the water column at 100 cm 100 cmH2O ±1 cm
ruler height and check the value for
Pves in the display.

Note: ANDROMEDA states a relative error of less than 1 %. A properly calibrated device,
however, offers much greater accuracy (rel. error less than 0.2 %).

Calibration and test measurement

Please refer to detailed calibration guide in chapter “Calibration and test” on page 68
Uroflow transducer (optional):

• Test measurement - if the actual value is more than 500g inaccurate the trans-
ducer might be defective and must be serviced.

• Calibrate using 1 kg for most accurate result.

• Test measurement - if the actual value is more than 2g inaccurate the transducer
might be defective and must be serviced.
Infused Volume transducer:

• Test measurement using 3kg - if the actual value is more than 1000g inaccurate
the transducer might be defective and must be serviced.

• Calibrate using 1 kg for an accurate result or 3kg for an even better.

ANDROMEDA 03.11.2016 77
HELIX – Service Manual Maintenance Work Specification

• Test measurement using 3kg - if the actual value is more than 10g inaccurate the
transducer might be defective and must be serviced.
Filling Pump:
Attention! To test the pump, use always a new pump tube.

• Test output pressure using a pump tube connected to a manometer. If the pres-
sure is higher than 2.5 bars or lower than 1.5 bar then the pump mechanics might
be defective.

• Adjust pump output pressure to 2 bars +/-0.3 bar.

• Test measurement – let the pump run for 2 minutes at 50 ml/min. If the actual
value is more 40ml inaccurate the pump mechanics might be defective and must
be serviced.

• Calibrate letting the pump run for 2 minutes and the “Vinf automatic” function for
most accurate result.

• Test measurement - if the actual value is more than 5ml inaccurate the pump
mechanics might be defective and must be serviced.
Pressures:
Attention! To test the pressures, use always new pressure transducers.

• Test measurement - if the actual value is more than 10 cm/H2O inaccurate the
device might be defective and must be serviced.

• Calibrate using 20cm water column for accurate result or 100cm for even better.

• Test measurement - if the actual value is more than 3 cm/H2O inaccurate the de-
vice might be defective and must be serviced.
EMG pre-amplifier (optional):

• Short-cut all three electrode inputs – if the ground noise is higher than 5µV the
pre-amplifier might be defective and must be serviced.

• Generate test signal using the hand - if the signal peak is less than 100µV the
pre-amplifier might be defective and must be serviced.

Catheter Puller (optional):

• Test measurement – let the puller run for 1 minute at 1 mm/sec. If the actual
value is more 10mm inaccurate the pump mechanics might be defective and
must be serviced.

• Calibrate by letting the puller run at a speed of 1mm/sec. for 100mm for most ac-
curate result.

• Test measurement - if the actual value is more than 10mm inaccurate the puller
mechanics might be defective and must be serviced.

Electrical Safety Test

Needed tools
• Insulation pad (only EMG test)
• ANDROMEDA – Test cable HKB30020
• ANDROMEDA – Test cable HKB30030
• Safety tester according to EN 62353

Preparation
EMG pre-amplifiers with serial numbers less than 08110401 must be opened before
testing.
In the case that the two red marked circuits are not present, then the pre-amplifier must
be modified. This is done by ANDROMEDA free of charge. Please continue the test
without EMG or suspend the test until the modified pre-amplifier is returned from
ANDROMEDA.

HELIX – Service Manual Electrical Safety Test

Test configuration
1. Attach the Helix mains power cable to the safety tester.

2. Attach the two test cables HKB30020 and HKB30030 to the safety tester. The
EMG pre-amplifier must during the entire test stay attached to the Helix. Attach
the test cable to the electrode inputs and the applied part connector of the safety
tester.

Attention:

• The EMG housing is applied to high voltage during the test!

• The EMG must during the test be placed on an insulation pad!

• Do not touch the EMG housing during the test.

3. Attach the test cable to the transducer inputs of the Helix and the applied part
connector of the safety tester.
