Lesson Idea Name: Life Cycle of a Chicken
Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 2nd

Content Standard Addressed: S2L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about
the life cycles of different living organisms.

1. Ask questions to determine the sequence of the life cycle of common animals in your area: a

mammal such as a cat, dog or classroom pet, a bird such as a chicken, an amphibian such as a

frog, and an insect such as a butterfly.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
By having a video that students can watch they will be able to stop and start it to go at their own pace. This
way students who need to hear or watch things multiply times can do that and do it at their own face.
Students can also fast forward if they miss something so they do not have to watch the whole video again.

Lesson idea implementation:
The teacher will play the video as the students to watch it. The video could even be introduced in centers or
small groups. The children will just watch it through the 1st time and just watch and listen. The second time
through they should take notes and then I could play it again and they draw an actual picture of the life cycle
and can write down things they have questions about. Student learning will be assessed throughout watching
all the videos and if they are participating in each activity and trying their best.

For students who need more time during the activity we can have them grab an iPad and watch it on their
own so they can stop and start it when they want and for kids who have mastered and need another
challenge we can ask them to think of a different animal or plant and create their own life cycle with pictures
and descriptions.

Importance of technology:
This project has to have technology because the video is the main source of what they are learning. This video
helps as an intro to the life cycle of a chicken and after we watch the video we can create our own life cycles
or dive deeper into the chickens. If we did not have the video, then we could not introduce the whole life
cycle in just a few minutes. We could always draw it but it is more visually appealing to the students and
changes their regular routine in the classroom.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:
An issue that could occur is if the students make a video and they want to share it to the internet then we as
teachers and adults have to make sure that it follows the schools and districts guidelines. We also have to
make sure that the parents approve of having their child’s content uploaded online. We must protect the
child and make sure we are taking the proper actions to insure we are following guidelines.
Reflective Practice:
I think that students will enjoy this since it is different than just sitting and learning but they actually get to
watch a video which is exciting to do at school. Students also get to make their own videos and that could be
an opportunity that they have not done before so its new and they want to be engaged in the activity. You
could add different things onto the video to like now the students have to create their own lesson to teach
the class or they have to make a story to read that goes a long with the video.
