Data Handling Answers

If you are having problems understanding how these answers were arrived at
you should attend the data handling workshop in Week 6.
(1) Calculate the final concentrations if;

(a) 5ml of 1M NaCl was made up to 80ml with water. (0.0625M HCL)
(b) 1μl of 4M HCL was diluted to 1dm3 with water. (0.004mM or 4.0x10-6M HCL)
(c) 50μl of a 30mM glucose solution was added to 0.95ml water. (1.5mM glucose)

(2) Explain how you would dilute the following;

(a) 50% (v/v) aqueous ethanol to 3% (v/v) aqueous ethanol.
(6 parts 50% ethanol + 94 parts water)
(b) 20 mg ml to 1μg cm . (0.005 parts 20 mg ml-1 plus 99.995 part water)
-1 -3

(3) If you dissolved 0.7g of NaOH (MW=40) in water to give a final volume of
160ml;

(a) What would the % concentration of NaOH be? (0.437% NaOH)

(b) What would the concentration of NaOH in mM be? (109.25mM NaOH)

(4) You have been asked to make up 0.3 litres of a 60 mM solution of glucose
(MW=180). What weight of glucose (in grams) would you require? (3.24g glucose)

(5) You have added 20 μl of a stock solution of glucose to a cuvette to give a final
volume of 1 ml. The concentration of glucose in the cuvette was found to be 2.5μmol
ml-1. What was the concentration of glucose (in mM) in the stock solution?
(125mM glucose)

6) 5 grams of sodium hydroxide (NaOH M.W. = 40) were dissolved in enough water
to give 200 ml of solution. Calculate the normality of the solution.
0.625 N (remember HCL  H+ + CL-, i.e, Molarity = Normality)

7) How many grams of calcium hydroxide, (Ca(OH)2 M.W = 74) are required to
prepare 150 ml of 0.15 N Ca(OH)2 solution?
(here Normality = 2 X Molarity. So need to make up a 0.075 M solution) i.e. 0.835g
