Writing Prompt 5

Names are what make us unique, no one has the same full name. Yes, our first name

might match up with the person in one of our classes or our childhood best friend, but for the

most part our full name (first, middle, last) is different and it sets us apart from the rest of

society. I had never really heard the story of how I got my name until this assignment was

brought upon me. It made me very interested in my naming process and what it was that

sparked interest in the name “Lauren”.

After asking both my parents about my name, I found some similar aspects that they

both had told me. For one, my naming process was a joint effort between both of them, they felt

it was the right name for me and my personality. My full name, Lauren Marie McInerny, was

thought of on the spot by my parents. They did not have the name previously picked, it just

came to them once I was born. After asking my parents how they got my name and why they

picked it, they both stimatusouly said that they just thought it was a beautiful name. At the time

they had never really heard of it before, but now as I’ve gone through both middle and high

school I’ve met my fair share of Laurens. Sometimes, I would even have to go by my middle

name as well just to distinguish myself. I have only met one person in my life that has the name

Lauren Marie and I graduated high school with her. At the time, my parents probably thought

they were being unique but 1999 and 2000 must have been a popular time for the name Lauren.

I wish there was more of a story behind my name and how my parents chose it, but

when I asked there was not much of a story that my parents could tell. I guess it was meant to

be since both my parents fell in love with the name right away. I know of multiple people who

are named after someone in their family or their name is a part of their heritage. My name is not

passed down in the family at all, in fact I think the only one who has a passed down name in my

immediate family is my brother, and it's his middle name. My dad’s side of the family is Irish, so

my parents gave my sister an Irish name, but I don’t think they named her solely for that

purpose. After doing some interviews with my parents, I learned that they really didn’t have a

naming process for any of their kids, it was just based off of what they liked and what name they

were attached to right away.
