PROJECT SCOPE STATEMENT
PETRONAS TWIN TOWER 2

1. INTRODUCTION
The Project Scope Statement is a main document that serve for defining the
scope of the Petronas Twin Towers Project, in this project also must include the
deliverables work, this is necessary to ensure a common understanding of the
project.

Any change to the scope statement must be vetted in the original and approved
project, all the changes must be check before the implementation.

2. OBJECTIVES
Create a structure that would represent the growing success of his country, also
attract the tourists and the local people feel proud of their city.

3. SCOPE DESCRIPTION
The Petronas Twin Towers, is a project that has a development design of twin
skyscrapers, located in Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), built with a Postmodern
Architectural style that will be used as Commercial offices and tourist attraction;
the towers are connected by a bridge between them. The towers reach a height
of 451, 9 meters and a total 88 floors, and they will be the tallest buildings in the
world.

Project Name: The Petronas Towers

Project Sponsor: Petronas Oil Company
KLCC Holdings Sdn Bhd
Stakeholders: Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, KLCCB, Bovis Land
Design Project manager: Architect Cesar Pelli; (Pelli&Co)
Project manager: Bob Pratt (Tower 1)
Jon Dunsford (Tower 2)

Charlie Thornton (chief engineer)

Constructors: Hazama Corporation (Tower 1)
Samsung C&T and Kukdong Engineering &
Construction (Tower 2)
Time frame: 6 years

4. REQUIREMENTS
The main requirements in the Petronas Towers are:

 The design of the buildings should follow the same patterns of

construction.
 The towers are joined by an air bridge at the 41st floor that should has
58.4 meters long, and give solution in case of fire.
 Each tower has 88 flats.
 Each tower is 451, 9 meters high. (Pinnacle -73.6).
 Each tower has 5 subterranean levels to parking places
 The skybridge has a rotational pin directly over the arch crown to
permit the crown rise and fall as towers move due to the heavy-winds.
 Seventy-six elevators need to be located in the towers.
 29 of the elevators will be double deck
 the elevators will ascend and descend at a speed of 23 feet per second
 The spires or pinnacles found on the top of both towers are also a
notable feature of Islamic buildings.

5. PROJECT BOUNDARIES
The Petronas Towers project includes all planning, designing and building
associated work.

The Petronas Towers is project that embrace all type engineering and
planification, reports, meeting of work, lab, foundation, build, sky bridge, testing

material, manual and also a great human team, however into the project have
delimited thing as the height, the pinnacles, glasses and time restrains.

6. DELIVERABLES

Project Management
 Project Management documentation.
 Proposal
 Weekly work meetings
 Manuals
 Engineering report including updates on progress, schedule and
Budget
 Certifications
 Completed safety plan including both fire safety plan and Terrorism
safety plan.
Design and Engineering Plans
 Design drawings
 Design documents
 Structural:

Resist lateral wind forces up to 250 km/h.

(16) Cylindrical high-strenght concrete columns connected by a ring

beam at each level.

Concrete should be consistent between the perimeter columns and

range from 80 MPa at the base to 40 MPa at the top.

Support building in limestone site flooring and resist 300,000.00

metric tons weight.

Core structure in order to house the elevators.

Construction
 The tower should be complete the internal structure and finishes:

PROJECT SCOPE STATEMENT
PETRONAS TWIN TOWER 2

The final architecture must follow the design approved.

The final architecture interior and exterior should be delivered with
high light finishes.
The interior architecture as door, furniture, bathrooms etc., should
be high quality and luxurious.

 Utilities:

Working hot/cold water system for supply and movement of water.

Cool-down mechanical system composed by 12 feet diameter

wheels meant to rotate slowly to supply and exhaust air streams
and drop humidity of air supply from 90% to 70% and reduce fresh
air cooling by more than 50%.

The installation of electrical systems should meet international

safety standards and architectural plans.

The elevators should be high speed ones in order to make 58 lifts

to transport 10000 people.

7. ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA
 All services have passing the running test and are stable in its functions
and certificates are available and signed by competent and qualified
bodies.
 The construction of the Petronas Towers is made according to the
country and city legislation and regulations.
 Customer can to receive part of the works if that part is accord with the
plant and specification.
 Quality dossiers are handed over to customer at the time the Provisional.
 The towers once completed should match with the defined and signed off
Requirements.

PROJECT SCOPE STATEMENT
PETRONAS TWIN TOWER 2

 Cumplir con todos los entregables dentro del tiempo y el presupuesto

programados.

8. CONSTRAINTS

Time
The time frame is limited to 6 years, when a similar project would need
up to 8 years.

Working hours will need to be unlimited 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.
Due to the heavy rains, there is an impact in team schedule and time.

Excavation and foundation time frame: 1 year.

4 days of construction per floor.

Budget
The full Project is limited by USD $ 1.6 billion

Design
The exterior design of tower should represent the Islamic culture and be
unique.

Tallest buildings in the world

Geographical
Malaysia is located in the heart of the monsoon Lack of light steels,
tender concrete

Climate
Heavy rain, aggressive weather, strong wind

Structural
Unstable bedrock

9. ASSUMPTIONS
 During the rainy season, cheap labor will be available.
 All-important stakeholders will come to the next meeting.
 The Petronas Towers Project has full support from Malaysia Prime
Minister and government.
 Builders working 24 hours/ 7 days a week is adequate to complete the
project in 6 years since its beginning.
 Materials cost will not increase more than a 10 % in the following 2
years.
