Los primeros pobladores del municipio de Río San Juan, fueron los indios
Ciguayos, pertenecientes al cacicazgo de Maguá, quienes llamaban al Río Cumíti,
al que más tarde se le dio el nombre de Río San Juan, en honor a un cacique
procedente de Puerto Plata, el cual fue bautizado con el nombre de San Juan.
Las actividades comerciales eran realizadas por vía marítima, principalmente con
la ciudad de Puerto Plata.
Clima
En Río San Juan, los veranos son largos, muy caliente y mayormente nublados;
los inviernos son caliente, ventosos y mayormente despejados y está opresivo
durante todo el año. Durante el transcurso del año, la temperatura generalmente
varía de 21 °C a 31 °C y rara vez baja a menos de 20 °C o sube a más de 32 °C.
Cultura
Rio San Juan es rico en cultura y tradición. Cada febrero nuestros pueblos se
visten de alegría y salen a las calles a celebrar el carnaval.
Máscaras, disfraces, desfiles, diversión, imaginación… una fiesta que saca el “lado
loco” y creativo de los dominicanos.
Hay un municipio en la costa norte que tiene el único carnaval marino del país. Se
trata de Río San Juan, en María Trinidad Sánchez.
Todos los años, desde 1998 y durante cuatro días, desarrollan el
“Carnavarengue”, una expresión cultural de sus habitantes.
La tarima la ubican dentro de la hermosa Laguna Gri Gri, así como el desfile de las
comparsas sobre botes. Un despliegue de belleza y creatividad hay en los trajes
de los comparseros, quienes se inspiran en la vida marina.
El espacio alrededor de la laguna sirve como un anfiteatro natural, lo que facilita la
vista de los espectadores.
Las espectaculares playas que adornan al municipio se suman al seductor
carnaval y atraen durante estas fechas a cientos de visitantes de otras provincias y
extranjeros.
Religión
En Rio San Juan las personas de ese lugar la religión que predomina es la católica
y son creyente de la virgen de la piedra desde su evangelización por los colonos
españoles, el país cuenta con una populación mayoritariamente católica. El culto
de la virgen, en particular, es muy popular: el 21 de enero es el día de la Virgen de
la Altagracia, protectora del país; el 24 de septiembre es el día de la Virgen de Las
Mercedes.
Medio de transporte
El medio de transporte en Rio San Juan son vehículos como, guagua, coche,
taxis, Caribe tours, las guaguas designan sobre todo los microbuses que circulan
de una ciudad a otra.
Los autobús son confortables, climatizados, y los enlaces son frecuentes en todo
el país. Hacia o desde Río San Juan, es la compañía Caribe Tours que asegura
un transporte confortable y seguro.
Taxi privado
Existen numerosos taxis privados. Usted puede por ejemplo ponerse en contacto
con la central de taxi Río San Juan Cabrera. Los chóferes son organizados en
sindicato, los precios son predefinidos según el trayecto.
Economía
The first settlers of the municipality of Río San Juan were the Ciguayos Indians,
belonging to the cacicazgo of Maguá, who called the Río Cumíti, which was later

elevated to Municipal District, by presidential decree. At that time there were no
roads, only a neighborhood road communicating with the municipality of Cabrera.

Plata.
Rio San Juan is a city with approximately 15,000 inhabitants.
Climate
In Río San Juan, the summers are long, very hot and mostly cloudy; winters are

Culture

The stage is located inside the beautiful Gri Gri Lagoon, as well as the procession
of comparsas on boats. A display of beauty and creativity is in the costumes of the
comparseros, who are inspired by marine life.
The space around the lagoon serves as a natural amphitheater, which facilitates
the view of the spectators.
The spectacular beaches that adorn the municipality add to the seductive carnival
and attract hundreds of visitors from other provinces and foreigners during this
time.
Religion
In Rio San Juan the people of that place the religion that predominates is Catholic
and they are believers of the virgin of the stone since their evangelization by
Spanish settlers, the country has a mostly Catholic population. The cult of the
Virgin, in particular, is very popular: January 21 is the day of the Virgin of
Altagracia, protector of the country; September 24 is the day of the Virgin of Las
Mercedes.
Transport

city to another.

Cabrera taxi station. The drivers are organized in a union; the prices are
predefined according to the route.
Economy
Traditionally, the economic production of the municipality of Río San Juan is based
on livestock, fishing and agriculture and was carried out by sea with Puerto Plata.
Then in the 80s with the implementation of tourism activity produced a large
displacement of the rural population to the city, agricultural production declined
considerably projecting the economy of the municipality towards consumerism and
not production which allowed them to concentrate the riches in tourist and
commercial companies.
