Grade: 11th Subject: US History - Colonial Foundations
1. Standards a. 11.1a Contact between Native American groups and Europeans occurred through cultural exchanges, resistance efforts, and conflict. b. 1c Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways. 2. Lesson Objectives a. Students will be able to explain how Christopher Columbus was both a hero and a villain. b. Students will be able to navigate different activities on the SMART board. 3. Introduce the lesson a. Lesson objectives will be on the title slide and briefly discussed by the teacher in the first few minutes of class. b. The teacher will explain that the students will be navigating various SMART board activities throughout the lesson. The various interactive SMART board activities, where student are coming up to and interacting with the board in basically every slide, will act as the motivator. 4. Provide Information a. Slide: Title, introduction to objectives and lesson b. Slide: Do now. Students are given a story that they just moved out of the home their family has lived in for a long time. Students are asked to brainstorm and jot down reasons for their move, one good thing that happened in their new neighborhood and one bad thing that happened in their new neighborhood. c. Slide: Choosing who writes on board with card application. d. Slide: Four students writing their answers to the do now on the SMART Board. Discussion of answers e. Slide: Presents information about Columbus being a Hero/Genius f. Slide: Presents information about Columbus being a Villain/Fool g. Slide: Interactive Vocab activity h. Slide: Students coming to board and writing down different natural resources that explorers came to Western Hemisphere looking for. Teacher discussing which resources will play a large role in the development of North American Society. i. Slide: Review of how Columbus was a Hero and Villain j. Slide Exit Slip/homework: Students will be asked to write a paragraph in which they argue whether they feel he more of a hero or more of a villain, using supporting evidence from the lesson. 5. Provide Knowledge of Results. a. Teacher will guide students through the various SMART board activities, which allow students to be both introduced to information and given an opportunity to practice the information. b. Students will be given an exit slip/homework assignment that will be collected the next day in class and graded by the teacher to assess students knowledge.Provide Practice 6. Provide Practice a. After information is presented to students, students will have interactive SMARTboard games/activities to complete, which will be a means for students to practice vocabulary and the information presented in the lesson. b. Student use of the markers and the board itself will act as practice with using the technology. 7. Methods of Assessment a. Student content knowledge will be assessed while they complete the content and vocabulary SMARTboard activities. The Exit Slip/Homework assignment will be used to assess student writing skills and content knowledge b. Students will be assessed on their use of the SMART board when they come to the board to touch, drag, or write anything on the board. 8. Review a. Students will review the content of the lesson in the second to last slide titled “Columbus Review”. They will also review the content while they are writing up the Exit Slip/Homework assignment.
