Gotter,Ana. “EMDR Therapy: What you need to Know.”

Healthline. December 15, 2017

In this article the author talks about EMDR therapy. Eye Movement Desensitization and

Reprocessing Therapy is an interactive psychotherapy technique used to relieve psychological

stress. It is an effective treatment for trauma and PTSD. During the sessions of treatment, you are

relieving traumatic or triggering experiences in brief doses while the therapist directs your eye

movement. The therapy is treated in 8 sessions. It was also proved through a study of 22 people

that EMDR therapy helped 77 percent of individuals using the therapy to treat PTSD.

After reading this article I believe that this therapy is worth the try. I feel this way because

there aren’t any medications being prescribed. A form of therapy would work any day better than

medications that are controlled substances. The article was medically reviewed before being

published. Therefore, all information attested to is true.

This source would relate well to my research paper on PTSD. When I begin to discuss the

types of medical treatments available, I can discuss EDMR Therapy. I can go into detail about this

and have the information to back it up.

McClelland. “Hearts and Minds: PTSD is already at epidemic levels among returning vets. And

now it’s spreading to their families.”

Mother Jones Jan.-Feb.2013: 16t. Opposing Viewpoints in Context. Web 24 Oct 2018

This article explains how families are affected when their loved ones return from active

duty suffering with PTSD. Families talked about how they had to adjust their everyday lives to

accommodate their loved ones. Noise such as the alarm clock, air conditioner, and a cat paddling

triggered their PTSD and they couldn’t tolerate it.

It hasn’t been very easy for Vets to cope with PTSD. Families are falling apart because of

the effect’s PTSD has caused for their loved ones. The information is very reliable it’s coming

for the Vets and their families. However, I feel the Veteran’s Affairs should offer mental

examinations to those Vets. They’ve served our country and they should be afforded any services

they need.

This source is very informative to my topic. It coincides well with other articles, because

after compiling all the facts at hand it gives you a better understanding of PTSD. I would use this

source to tell how PTSD has affected the Vet and their families.

Parekh, Ranna, M.D., M.P.H. “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.”

(DSM-5) American Psychiatric Publishing, 2013.

In this article it is explained that PTSD is a psychiatric disorder. It occurs in people who

have experienced or witnessed traumatic events. PTSD has also been known as “shell shock”

discriminate it can affect any ethnicity, nationality or culture, and any age. PTSD affect about 3.5

percent of U.S. adults, about one in elven people will be diagnosed within their lifetime. Women

are twice as likely as men to have PTSD.

PTSD is well explained and defined. It is well stated that PTSD doesn’t just affect one race

it effects any creed. I totally agree with this article because it gives information. These are numbers

that if we feel are not true, we can go back and research them ourselves.

This information will go hand and hand with all other gathered materials. PTSD is discussed

by many individuals. Therefore, this information could be grouped by Vet, Vet’s Family, and Vet’s

Physician.

complex her life was and how she became a prisoner in her own apartment. After being properly

diagnosed she was no longer at the mercy of PTSD and she was properly treated and medicated.

Her words of encouragement were it’s never too late to seek help.

The author shares a personal testimony. This is an eye opener and wake up call for someone

who is suffering silently with PTSD. This author wants to raise awareness about PTSD. Because

she has seen for herself what the illness can do to you if untreated.

This article is like the meat and potatoes. You’ve been told all about PTSD and its effects.

This article gives you an overview from someone who has PTSD. This article coincides well
because if there is anyone still doubting PTSD is an illness, you have a living witness who can

In this article trauma is defined as the response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event
that overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope, causes feelings of helplessness, diminishes their
sense of self and their ability to feel the full range of emotions and experiences. There are 5
emotional signs associated with trauma, that may lead to nightmare, insomnia, difficulty with
relationships, and emotional outbursts. Common physical symptoms are nausea, dizziness, altered
sleep patterns, changes in appetite, headaches and gastrointestinal problems. Psychological
disorders have been labeled as PTSD, depression, anxiety, dissociative disorders, and substance
abuse problems.

In assessing this article, we find out trauma has many faces. As you explore more you learn
that PTSD has been labeled as one of the psychological disorders of trauma. I have concluded that
PTSD and Trauma, possess some of some traits and they both have similarities.

This information in this article, is very helpful. Its information that can be used in many ways
when writing the paper. I could write a paper on PTSD or Trauma and they both would get the
point out about these two disorders being illnesses.

Robinson, Ann. “Seven Ways to Deal With PTSD.”

The Guardian, July 23, 2018

In this article PTSD is defined again. The most important part of this article is it break

downs ways to deal with PTSD. Alcohol and medication are common props but trying to blot out

the trauma can make it harder to deal with. PTSD is not a sign of weakness, anyone can be affected.

The article goes on further to discuss treatments and other approaches to dealing with PTSD. There

is a lot a person goes through mentally that wears and tears them down. However, not everyone

copes and deals with things the same.

This is very beneficial information. It makes the reader aware of ways to deal with PTSD.

Also provides the reader with examples and brief illustration about PTSD. Gives warnings also

about can be affected.

This article would be great to help sum up ways of dealing with PTSD. This article

elaborates seven different ways to cope and deal with PTSD. All the other articles have given

informative information at PTSD. This article makes the reader aware of how to deal with PTSD

and brings the article to a close when you have discussed how to deal with PTSD.

Satel, Sally. "The Iraq War Has Not Increased the Number of Veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress

Disorder." Behavioral Disorders. Ed. Louise I. Gerdes. Detroit: Greenhaven Press, 2010.

Opposing Viewpoints. Rpt. from "Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Iraq Veterans: Testimony

before the House Committee on Veterans Affairs." American Enterprise Institute. 2004. Opposing

Viewpoints in Context. Web. 24 Oct 2018

In this article Sally Satel a physician is arguing that PTSD is a real disorder and that the

numbers of reported returning vets with the disorder is exaggerated. Satel believes doctors should

promote rehab rather than disability. Satel believes if that was done there would be less Vets

returning suffering with PTSD. She also asserts it is unfair to pass on to the Vets the Legacy of

Vietnam.

Doctors should thoroughly exam these Vets upon return. Vets are being prescribed meds

but are not being diagnosed correctly. Before any meds are prescribed there should be a complete

examination followed up by a second opinion. These vets should be examined the same way mental

patients are. At least two out of 3 doctors should be able to determine whether its PTSD or War

Trauma.
This article would help shade light to my topic. In this article the reader can see how many

Vets are misdiagnosed and not treated for the correct illness. It fits in because it breaks down the

facts that show how individuals malinger. However, not everyone who portrays symptoms of

PTSD have PTSD.

In assessing to article, the writer is very informative. The reader makes it to where the
person just reading or the person with PTSD can understand. The information in this article
shouldn’t be avoided it is very beneficial.

This article would help my research paper greatly. The information here in this article

“PTSD: growing Epidemic.” NIH Medline Plus.

Winter 2009 Issue: Volume 4 Number 1 Pages 10-14

In this article the facts about PTSD are discussed. PTSD has affected 7.7 million adults.

PTSD can occur at any age. Women are more likely to develop PTSD than men. PTSD is often

accompanied by stress, substance abuse, or other anxiety disorders. Many have seen combat. Many

have been shot at, seen buddies killed, or witnessed death up close. These are types of events that

can lead to PTSD.

After reading this article about the facts of PTSD. Many of these individuals have been

affected, directly, indirectly, or 3rd party. The things that they have been affected by have been

very tragic and horrific. It’s hard to pick up and carry on when you have witnessed such horrible

events.
This article would be a great asset to my paper. This article is full of facts about PTSD and

information provided by the Veterans Affairs. This information is coming from very reliable

sources.
