OBJECTIVE: Journalism B.3F GRADE LEVEL: 10-12

Objective/Purpose:
Journalism B.3F The student is expected to: evaluate and confirm the validity of background information from a
variety of sources such as other qualified persons, books, and reports.

Instructional delivery:

The instruction will include a variety of instructional methods, group centers and direct instruction.

● Students will arrive to class and be seated in theree groups of three or four.

● There will be 4 examples shown in a PowerPoint presentation of headlines/articles/magazine

covers which show news (fake/accurate), using small cards placed in table students will raise

their checkmark card or their x card when they think its fake news or real news.

Model (EXPLAIN): 7min

● Students will watch first 5 minutes 30 seconds of video

● Teacher will explain the four different activities they will do in their groups. Written instructions will be
provided in the groups as well.

Independent Practice (ELABORATE): (List the assignment(s) that will be given to the students to ensure they

Each group will be assigned an article (fake or real). They will be given 2 minutes to read and analyze the
article as a group. They will then proceed to activities on the group centers.

There will be 4 different group activities on which students will acquire some skills to spot fake news.

Activity 1 (5 min)
Video and Fill in the blank- Students will watch video while completing fill in the blank worksheet.

Activity 2 (5 min)
Fake v. Real Activity:Students will use white boards around the classroom they will divide the whiteboard into
one side real one side fake. Using the sticky notes provided with different key words they will place each were
they think they belong.
Activity 3 (5 min)
Fact checking websites: Students will be introduced to websites they can use to check their news, sources and
information. After reviewing these websites they will take short quiz and share results with group members.

Activity 4 (5 min)
After completing the activities, each group will have to analyze their article again in order to demonstrate if it
was fake or real using the following checklist sheet.

Instructions for activities

Activity 1: (5 minutes)
Watch the following video on Fake News, while watching it complete the fill in the blank worksheet.

Activity 2: (5 minutes)
Fake v. Real: The white board is divided into real v fake. Using the sticky notes provided with different
keywords place each were you think they belong.

Activity 3: (5 minutes)

Fact checking websites: Review the fact check websites that can be used to check news, sources and
information. After reviewing these websites take the following short quiz and share results with your group
members.
