PART – C

1. A 3 phase induction motor has a starting torque of 100% and a maximum torque of 200% of the full
load torque. Determine:
i) Slip at which maximum torque occurs.
ii) Full load slip

2. A three phase, 25KW, 400 V, 50Hz, 8 pole induction motor has rotor resistance of 0.08Ω and
standstill reactance of 0.4Ω. The effective stator/rotor turn ratio is 2.5/1. The motor is to drive a
constant-torque load of 250N-m. Neglect stator impedance.
i) Calculate the minimum resistance to be added in rotor circuit for the motor to start up on load.
ii) At what speed would the motor run, if the added rotor resistance is (A) left in the circuit, and (B)
subsequently short circuited. (8) [A/M 2017]
3. An induction motor has an efficiency of 0.9 when the shaft load is 45KW. At this load, stator ohmic
loss and rotor ohmic loss each is equal to the iron loss. The mechanical loss is one-third of the no-load
losses. Neglect ohmic losses at no-load. Calculate the slip. (8) [N/D 2017]

4. The active power input to a 415V, 50Hz, 6pole, 3phase induction motor running at 970rpm is 41Kw.
The input power factor is 0.9. The stator losses are 1.1KW and mechanical losses are 1.2KW. Calculate
line current, Slip, Rotor copper loss, Mechanical power output and efficiency. (13)

5. An 8 pole, 3-phase, 50 Hz induction motor runs at a speed of 710 rpm with an input power of 35Kw.
The stator copper at this operating condition is 1200 W while the rotational losses are 600W. Find i)
Rotor copper loss ii) Gross torque developed iii) Gross mechanical power developed iv) Net torque and
mechanical power output. (13)

PART – C

1. The rotor of a 4 pole, 50Hz slip ring induction motor has a resistance of 0.3 Ω per phase and runs at
1440 rpm at full load. Calculate the external resistance per phase which must be added to lower the
speed to 1320 rpm, the torque being the same as before.
2. A 4 pole induction motor and a 6 pole induction motor are connected in cumulative cascade. The
frequency in the secondary circuit of the 6 pole motor is observed to be 1.0Hz. Determine the slip in
each machine and the combined speed of the set. Take supply frequency as 50Hz.

3. A 4 pole, 50 Hz, 3 phase slip ring induction motor when fully loaded runs with a slip of 3%.
Determine the value of the resistance to be inserted in series per phase in the rotor circuit to reduce the
speed by 10% and the new slip. The rotor resistance per phase is 0.2Ω.

4. A 4 pole, 50 Hz, 3 phase induction motor develops a maximum torque of 162.8N-m at 1365 rpm.
The resistance of the star connected rotor is 0.2Ω/phase. Calculate the value of the resistance that must
be inserted in series with each rotor phase, if the starting torque is equal to half the maximum torque.
