Ancient Rome

If you look at a map of Europe you will see a boot-

shaped piece of land that hangs down from Europe. It is
surrounded on three sides by the Mediterranean Sea. This
“boot” is a peninsula. It is a country called Italy. This is
where the city of Rome is located. If you were to travel
back in time over 2,000 years to Ancient Rome you would
find that Rome was much bigger back then. Ancient Rome
was an empire that stretched across land and sea. It
stretched across Europe and into Asia, and Africa.

The ancient Romans loved art and beauty. They

covered the floors with beautiful pictures called mosaics.
These pictures were made with tiny tiles glued to the floor.
They also made many statues of gods and goddesses.
They loved to surround themselves with beauty.

The ancient Romans were great builders. They built

large temples to honor their gods and goddesses. Where
did they get the idea for this? From the Greeks! They
learned about columns from the Greeks. They invented the
arch. They used arches to build the Coliseum. They built
aqueducts that were used to carry water from the hills to
the city. They were also great road builders. They used
lots of simple machines because they were builders.

The Romans made many contributions that are still

useful today. They gave us beautiful examples of art such
as mosaics, statues, and paintings. They showed us how
the arch can be used to make beautiful and strong
buildings. And they gave us an idea about government that
we still use today: representative democracy.
