PROPOSAL
Design and Layout
Computer Lab Design and Layout
In this proposal we would UITM to have modern interactive lab. We provided modern
enviroment with latest modern technology. We also provided one system that can be
access by the lecture to moniture the student whlie they are in the lab. The student can
also access direct to the lecture by using the computer.

The computer lab will be comprised of 30 computers, 1 computer will be a dedicated

instructor’s station. It includes:

 Smart board with integrated LCD  Information board

 Projector  Cabinets
 Air conditioner  Floor carpet
 Fire extinguisher

The lab will be arranged in rows (refer to Layout) tables against each. There will be
four (4) columns on each rows and set in pair to accommodate 30 students as shown
in the picture below. One each rows ,there will be a set of four(4) table on the right
and left. The tables are adjustable and the student can change the high of the table. We
have selected a comfortable and modern chairs for the student. The lab is carpeted in
the seating areas and this will reduce the noise generated from chairs moving around
on the floor.

In overall the proposed computer lab design is intended to meet the needs of students,
including those with disabilities. It is design to be secure, with much of the hardware
cabling and connections under the wall to protect the hardware from heavy traffic and
protect students from trip and fall injuries. Lessons can be performed at the one-on-
one learning, through the individual workstations for self-study, or through
demonstrations via the Smart board. Students should be able to move around in this
interactive learning environment with minimal risks to themselves or the equipment.

LAN Network

We use LAN network. A local area network (LAN) is a group of computers and
associated devices that share a common communications line or wireless link to a
server. Typically, a LAN encompasses computers and peripherals connected to a
server within a distinct geographic area such as an office or a commercial
establishment. Computers and other mobile devices use a LAN connection to share
resources such as a printer or network storage.

HUB

6
Star Topology
Star topology is one of the most common network setups. In this configuration, every
node connects to a central network device, like a hub, switch, or computer. The central
network device acts as a server and the peripheral devices act as clients.

Floor Plan

7
Advatages star topology
 Centralized management of the network, through the use of the central
computer, hub, or switch.
 Easy to add another computer to the network.
 If one computer on the network fails, the rest of the network continues to function
normally.

Benefit of Computer Network

 Computer networking can help your business grow

A good computer networking solution can be very beneficial for your business. It lets
you store important business data in a centralized location. This allows the various
computers in the network to retrieve important data from the main location. Additionally,
computer networking lets you access the data from the other computers on the same
network, and modify it according to your needs. Computer networking enables
employees to share ideas more easily and work more efficiently. It increases their
productivity and generates more income for the company. More importantly, computer
networking improves the way companies offer their services to the world. Let’s now
talk more specifically about how computer networking can help you, and your business.

 Cost-effective resource sharing

By creating a computer network and sharing the hardware you already have. Let us
say that your company has a number of unconnected computers. Let’s choose printers
as an example of “hardware that you want employees to share”. The employees
wouldn’t be able to print documents unless you buy a separate printer for each
computer. Buying additional printers for each of the unconnected computers costs you
money that you can invest in other things. When you network all of your computers
and printers, you make life easier for your employees as well. They don’t have to plug
in a USB drive, copy the files, and then walk over to a computer with a printer, repeating
the process. They would simply use the network to connect to the printer directly. File

8
Sharing is also a breeze Speaking of walking around copying files to USB drives – with
a computer network this will be a thing of the past. Your employees will be able to
simply copy files to and from any other network computer as if it were on their own
computer.

 Improving storage efficiency and volume

First of all, you get the combined storage volume of all the computers in the network.
To illustrate this in simple terms, let’s do some simplified math. Let’s say that your
business has 20 computers with 2 terabyte drives each. When you network these
computers, you can say you now have 40 terabytes of combined storage. This is
important because in a lot of businesses data gets used by multiple employees. Let’s
say there you have some generic branding graphic files. Each of your 20 employees
might use these files at different times. Without a network, you’d have to store a copy
of these files on each of the 20 computers. With a network, you only need to store the
file on one of those 20 computers, or a central server. Thereby reducing storage use
by 2000%. Obviously, some date will be unique to an employee, and some will be
central data that others will and should access. A good IT provider will help you figure
this out when setting up your network. They will also help you decide if you need a
centralized server solution or a basic peer-to-peer network.

 Access flexibility
The beauty of modern networking comes in its flexibility. You can take your tablet in a
meeting, and start a document. Then, you may move onto your own office computer
and continue working in the document, exactly where you left off. As your colleagues
invite you for a break, you may show them your document from your smartphone. All
of this is possible if the document resides on a central file server, and your network
includes a wireless connection.

3.0 SOFTWARE AND OPERATING SYSTEM CONSIDERATIONS

Software, an essential component of computer systems, enables the hardware to do

useful work for users. In this section, the discussion about software for computer
systems is organized into the following three categories:

1. Operating System (OS) software for client and server computers.

2. Basic computer application software, including software for word processing,
spreadsheets, presentations, and graphics.
3. Internet-related and -delivered software, including browsers, Java applications,
and interactive tools on Websites.

Operating System Software

Decisions about what operating system software to use on client or end-user

computers are usually based on the type of hardware purchased. If Apple computers
are purchased, then Apple’s OS, which comes with the computer, will likely be used
on client computers. If computers with Intel or Intel compatible CPUs are purchased,
the computers likely will come with a version of the Microsoft Windows OS. In contrast,
decisions about what software should be used to operate networked computers are
not as easy or predetermined as they are with client system software. Basic Apple and
Windows operating system software comes with the capability to enable computers to
be connected together to manage small networks. However, larger and more robust
networks that may need to be managed securely will require special network operating
system software installed on the network’s server to manage the functions of the
network, including links to printers and other peripherals, e-mail, file sharing, security
functions, and communication among linked computers.

There are different options for network operating system software. For Apple
computer systems, two main options are available: Apple’s own network operating
system and Linux. For Intel-based computers, the three main options are Microsoft
New Technology such as Windows 10, Novel Netware, and Linux. It is beyond the
scope of this chapter to present a detailed comparison of these network operating

24
system software options. However, there are several important questions that should
be addressed when deciding which network operating system to use, including:

i. It is technical support available and what does it cost for the different options?
ii. What types of network operating system software are most common in schools,
businesses, and government agencies in Malaysia?
iii. What types of network operating system software are used already?
iv. How much money is available to cover the costs of installing, maintaining, and
upgrading network operating system software?
v. Are there local user communities (face-to-face or Web based) that can be used
to access local technical support for different network operating system
software systems?
vi. Is the network operating system software available in a language version to
match languages commonly spoken by technicians and users?

Open Source Software (OSS)

One of the most hotly debated topics today deals with the question of whether
it is better to use open source software (OSS) or commercial software products for
client and server operating systems. There are no simple answers to this question
since they involve policy, commercial, technical, and educational concerns. For
education systems, the education functions that need to be supported and the needs
of students and teachers are the most important factors in making technology
decisions. If the software and hardware solutions do not ultimately serve the teaching
and learning process, then even “inexpensive” or “free” options can be very costly
educationally. If key educational software programs cannot be used on computer
systems with “free” OS software, then the “free” solution could become very
expensive. Similarly, educational uses and needs for computers are often quite
different from corporate needs and decision making about technology choices for
schools needs to reflect these differences.

Windows is a series of operating systems developed by Microsoft. Each version

of Windows includes a graphical user interface, with a desktop that allows users to

25
view files and folders in windows. For the past two decades, Windows has been the
most widely used operating system for personal computers PCs. Microsoft Windows
is designed for both home computing and professional purposes. Past versions of
Windows home editions include Windows 3.0 (1990), Windows 3.1 (1992), Windows
95 (1995), Windows 98 (1998), Windows Me (2000), Windows XP (2001), Windows
Vista (2006), Windows 7 (2009) and Windows 8 (2011). The current version, Windows
10, was released in 2015.

The first business-oriented version of Windows, called Windows NT 3.1, was in

1993. This was followed by Windows 3.5, 4.0, and Windows 2000. When Microsoft
released Windows XP in 2001, the company simply created different editions of the
operating system for personal and business purposes. Windows Vista and Windows
7 have followed the same release strategy. Windows is designed to run on standard
x86 hardware, such as Intel and AMD processors. Therefore, it can be installed on
multiple brands of hardware, such as Dell, HP, and Sony computers, as well as home-
built PCs. Windows 10 is a major version of the Microsoft Windows operating system
that built on the Windows NT kernel and follows Windows 8.

Part of the reason Microsoft decided to name the 2015 release "Windows 10"
(and skipped "Windows 9") is because the operating system is designed to be a new
direction for Microsoft. One of the primary aims of Windows 10 is to unify the Windows
experience across multiple devices, such desktop computers, tablets, and
smartphones. As part of this effort, Microsoft developed Windows 10 Mobile alongside
Windows 10 to replaces Windows Phone – Microsoft's previous mobile OS. Windows
10 also integrates other Microsoft services, such as Xbox Live and the Cortana voice
recognition assistant. While Windows 10 includes many new features, it also brings
back the Start Menu, which was dropped in Windows 8. The new and improved Start
Menu provides quick access to settings, folders, and programs and also includes tiles
from the Windows 8 interface. The bottom of the Windows 10 Start Menu includes a
search bar that allows you to search both local PC and the web.

Another major change in Windows 10 is the introduction of the "Edge" web

browser, which is designed to replace Internet Explorer (IE). While the OS still includes
IE, Edge is the default browser in Windows 10. Other new features include Continuum,

26
which automatically optimizes the user interface depending on whether you are using
an external keyboard or touchscreen, and Action Center, which is similar to the
Notifications bar in OS X. Windows 10 also supports multiple desktops on a single
monitor and provides Snap Assist, a feature that helps organize windows on the
screen.

Basic Computer Application Software

All computers are required a basic set of software applications to be useful for
computer literacy programs and to be integrated effectively into routine programs
based on specific task. These applications generally include software for word
processing and manipulating numeric data such as spreadsheets, presentation
software, and graphics software, and the increasingly important software to create
Websites and HTML documents. As with operating system software, commercial and
public domain options are available. Major commercial applications often are
purchased because they are the types of software used in businesses and government
offices, and it is often important to prepare students to use computers and applications
that are common in the workforce. Application software is specific to the task it is

27
designed for and can be as simple as a calculator application or as complex as a word
processing application. The basic computer application software that should have in
every computer in the lab is shown as below along with their function.

A Web browser, or simply browser, is an application specifically designed to

locate, retrieve and display content found on the internet. Google Chrome browser is
an open source program for accessing the World Wide Web and running Web-based
applications. The Google Chrome Web browser is based on the open source
Chromium project. Google released Chrome in 2008 and issues several updates a

29
year. It is available for Windows and others operating systems. The Google Chrome
browser takes a sandboxing-based approach to Web security. Each open website runs
as its own process, which helps prevent malicious code on one page from affecting
others (or the computer operating system at large). The browser also supports Web
standards such as HTML5 and cascading style sheets (CSS).

Google based the look of Chrome OS, its operating system for Web-based
applications, on the Chrome Web browser. Chrome was the first major Web browser
to combine the search box and the address bar, a feature that most competitors have
since adopted. It also allows users to sign in with their Google accounts, which enables
them to sync bookmarks and open Web pages across multiple devices. In 2010,
Google launched the Chrome Web Store, an online marketplace where users can buy
and install Web-based applications to run inside the browser. These apps are available
as either browser extensions or links to websites.

Internet-Related and Delivered Software

One of the most important benefits of Internet- and Web related software is that
most of it can be used regardless of the hardware and software installed. The “platform
independence” of the Internet reduces the costs involved in using the Internet and
enhances its benefits. One key area of Internet use is access to a variety of Internet
and Web-based software applications, much of it freely available in different languages
that can be used in a variety of ways, including:

i. Browser and search software that enables to carry out information on the
Internet.
ii. E-mail software that allows users to send and receive communication from
others and Websites.
iii. Listserv or e-mail distribution software that allows groups of users to form and
communicate easily by e-mail.
iv. Web-based discussion forum software that allows users to engage in ongoing
dialogues in which the topics or themes are linked to form discussion threads.
v. Interactive Web-based publishing tools that allow user to publish their thoughts,
comments, experiences, pictures, suggestions, etc., instantly on Web pages.

30
vi. Internet- and Web-based chat and instant messaging software that allows users
to engage in live text-based discussions.
vii. Easy-to-use Web page construction and publishing tools.
viii. Voice and video software applications that allow user to participate in
synchronous audio- and videoconferencing, if sufficient bandwidth is available.
ix. File storage and retrieval software that allows users to share digital files easily,
including documents, presentations, images, data, and music, with other users.

The existence of these online or Web-based software applications that enable

users to communicate at a distance has given rise to opportunities for collaborative
and project based learning that were not possible before the Internet. The important
category of Internet-related software includes applications, many of which are freely
available, that enable users to construct and publish Web pages and HTML
documents on the Internet. In addition, the Internet’s “platform independence” helped
give rise to a variety of software applications, including JAVA, FLASH, and
Shockwave, which can be used to create learning applications that simulate simple
and complex processes and concepts. These programming languages can be used
by user, and mediated learning specialists to create simulations that can accelerate
understanding of complex concepts and demonstrate scientific activities that normally
would need to be carried out in expensive labs.

5.0 Security and Safety
The computer laboratory is a very important and delicate environment that require strict
safety and maintenance. For this to be ensured, we have follow and adhere to a set of
computer laboratory rules. These rules are introduced to make sure the computers and
the people have a long and protected lifespan. Taking a broader view of IT security
reveals that it goes beyond purely logical and technical security. In addition to firewalls,
virus protection and storage concepts, it is essential to protect IT structures from
physical damage. Regardless of the required protection class, ranging from basic
protection to high availability with minimum downtime, it is essential to work out a
requirement-specific IT security concept. Cost-effective IT security solutions are modular
so that they can meet specific requirements in a flexible manner. They are scalable so
that they can grow in line with the company and, most of all, they are comprehensive to
ensure that in the event of any hazard, the protection is actually in place. It is therefore
paramount to know the potential hazards beforehand, as a basis for implementing specific
security solution.

5.2 Types of extinguishers - a detailed guide

5.2.1 Water Extinguishers

Water extinguishers are the most common fire
extinguisher type for class A fire risk. Most premises will
require either water or foam extinguishers.
Label Colour : Bright Red
Use for Organic materials such as:
Paper and cardboard,Fabrics and textiles,Wood and
coal
Do not use for:
– Fires involving electrical equipment
– Kitchen fires
– Flammable gas and liquids

How water extinguishers work:

The water has a cooling effect on the fuel, causing it to burn much more slowly until the
flames are eventually extinguished.

45
Types of premises/business who may need water extinguishers:
– Buildings constructed of wood or other organic materials
– Premises where there are organic materials to be found such as:
Offices
Schools
Hospitals
Residential properties
Warehouses
In fact most buildings need either water or foam extinguishers.

Where to locate water extinguishers:

– By the exits on a floor where a Class A fire risk has been identified

Water spray extinguishers – what’s the difference?:

Water spray extinguishers are equipped with a spray nozzle, rather than a jet nozzle,
meaning a greater surface area can be covered more quickly and the fire put out more
rapidly.

Water mist extinguishers – what’s the difference?:

Water mist extinguishers have a different type of nozzle again which releases
microscopic water particles. These particles ‘suffocate’ the fire and also create a wall of
mist between the fire and the person using the extinguisher, reducing the feeling of
heat.

46
5.2.2 Foam Extinguishers
Foam extinguishers are most common type of fire extinguisher for Class B fires, but
also work on Class A fires as they are water-based.

Label Colour : Cream

Use for : Organic materials such as:
o Paper and cardboard
o Fabrics and textiles
o Wood and coal
Plus: Flammable liquids, like paint and petrol
Do not use for:
– Kitchen fires
– Fires involving electrical equipment
– Flammable metals
How foam extinguishers work:
As with water extinguishers, foam extinguishers have a cooling effect on the fuel. On
burning liquids, the foaming agent creates a barrier between the flame and the fuel,
extinguishing the fire.

Types of premises/business who may need Foam extinguishers:

– Buildings constructed of wood or other organic materials
– Premises where there are organic materials to be found such as:
o Offices, Schools, Hospitals, Residential properties, Warehouses
– Buildings where flammable liquids are stored
In fact most buildings need either water or foam extinguishers

Where to locate foam extinguishers:

– By the exits on a floor where a Class A or Class B fire risk has been identified

47
5.2.3 Dry Powder Extinguishers
Standard dry powder extinguishers are also called ‘ABC’ extinguishers because they
tackle class A, B and C fires, however they are not
recommended for use in enclosed spaces. This is because
the powder can be easily inhaled, and also the residue is very
difficult to clean up after. ABC powder extinguishers can also
be used on some electrical fires. Specialist dry powder
extinguishers are used for flammable metals.
Label Colour : Blue
Use for: Organic materials such as:
Paper and cardboard
Fabrics and textiles
Wood and coal
Plus: Flammable liquids, like paint and petrol
Plus: Flammable gases, like liquid petroleum gas (LPG) and acetylene
Plus: Fires involving electrical equipment up to 1000v
Specialist dry powder extinguishers are only used on flammable metals, such as
titanium and magnesium.
Do not use for:
– Fires involving cooking oil
– Fires involving electrical equipment over 1000v
– or in enclosed spaces, such as offices or residential properties

How dry powder extinguishers work:

Dry powder extinguishers smother fires by forming a barrier between the fuel and the
source of oxygen.

48
Types of premises/business who may need Dry Powder extinguishers:
– Businesses using flammable gases for chemical processes
– Premises where welding and flame cutting takes place
– Garage forecourts
– Liquid petroleum gas (LPG) dispensing plants
– Premises with large, commercial boiler rooms

Where to locate Dry Powder extinguishers:

– Place dry powder extinguishers near to the source of the fire risk.

Specialist Dry Powder extinguishers – what’s the difference?:

Specialist dry powder extinguishers work in the same way as standard dry powder
extinguishers but are for use with flammable metals only. There are 2 types of specialist
dry powder extinguishers – ‘L2’ which only tackles lithium fires, and ‘M28’, for all other
flammable metal fires.

49
5.2.4 Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Extinguishers

Overview:
CO2 extinguishers are predominantly used for
electrical fire risks and are usually the main fire
extinguisher type provided in computer server
rooms. They also put out Class B fires (flammable
liquids, such as paint and petroleum).
Label Colour :
– Black
Use for:
– Flammable liquids, like paint and petrol
– Electrical fires
Do not use for:
– Kitchen fires – especially chip-pan fires
– Combustible materials like paper, wood or textiles
– Flammable metals
How CO2 extinguishers work:
CO2 extinguishers suffocate fires by displacing the oxygen the fire needs to burn.
Types of premises/business who may need CO2 extinguishers:
– Premises with electrical equipment, such as:
Offices, Kitchens, Construction sites, Server rooms
All work vehicles should also carry a smaller 2kg CO2 extinguisher.

Where to locate CO2 extinguishers:

– Place near to the source of the fire risk and/or near the fire exits.

51
5.3 Step on using fire extinguisher

Automatic sprinkler systems are the most widely used suppression system. These
systems function by discharging water as a cooling agent to suppress fires in the early
stages of fire growth. The design of automatic sprinkler systems can vary based on the
property protected and the available water sources. Typical systems used to protect
computer equipment areas include wet pipe and pre-action systems.
- Sprinkler system
i. Sprinkler is some if fire system that function when it detected by heat or smoke.
ii. Heat detector is the equipment that sticks on the wall to detect the exceptional
heat.
iii. It will reduce water so that it can control the fire.
iv. We have to check this tool to make sure it in good condition.

Determine the Security Feature

 We need a few security features like the usage of CCTV to monitor

the lab condition from burglary and damage controls.
 We can also install an alarm system for safety precaution from thieves
 Lab rules and relegation needed for authorization so that not everyone can simply
go in and out from the lab at will means strict orders. Create a Log Book.

52
- First Aids System.

A first-aid kit is a collection of supplies and equipment for use in giving first aid. First-aid
kits contain a variety of equipment that may include bandages for controlling bleeding,
personal protective equipment such as gloves, a breathing barrier for performing EAR
(expired air resuscitation) and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), and sometimes
instructions on how to perform first aid.
