First, run the initialize CBR Design line. This software run as a Microsoft Excel programme.
There are several steps need to follow design the pavement, which are:

Step 1: Insert the % of CBR value as 7% (depends on the type of the pavement)

Step 2: Insert growth rate value as 5 % reconsidered as the annual traffic growth.
Step 3: Next, insert the design life of parameter as 15 years

Step 4: Insert ‘X’ value as 1 because it represent the number of years between last count and
the year of completion of construction in years.
Step 5: Insert 20 cm height of kerb and 1.5 m for width of median.

Step 6: Choose terrain category as rolling / plain.


Step 7: Insert lane distribution factor as 0.75

Step 8: Insert 500 commercial vehicle at last count P in CV/day, 3 for number of lane in right
while 2 for number of lane in left.
Step 9: Insert 3 m for width of each lane and 1.2 m for width of paved shoulder. Next assume
the ratio of horizontal to vertical of pavement layers as 1:2.

Step 10: Click OK to perform the analysis of the pavement design.


All the result that was obtain from the design analysis can compared with the JKR requirement
standard to prove that this software can run. Finally, this software can generate drawing for
each layer of pavement by clicking ‘click here to see drawing’ box.
4.0 CONCLUSION

The purpose of a pavement is to protect the subgrade from shear failure due to the loads applied
at the pavement surface. These loads are applied through tires to the pavement, which spreads
the stresses to the point where they do not exceed the strengths of the various pavement layers
or the subgrade. Therefore, data such as magnitude of load, tire arrangement, the number of
repetitions, and the soil strength are of primary importance for pavement design. Therefore
CBR is very important to be tested because the water content effect the strength of subgrade.
There are many software that can be use to determine the design of subgrade and other. The
most important is the thickness of each layer for road construction that suitable for support the
loading from vehicle. Our group has been used Initialize CBR Design line for design each layer
of the road structure. This software are to generate each layer thickness with all the data are
given and collected such as loading of vehicle, number of lane, condition of weather and others.
All the result we get can compare with standard specification of JKR to approve weather our
design of each layer are acceptable. This software is to make our effort easier rather than
manual calculation. This software also can reduce our time to get the design of each layer.
