LESSON PLAN #1
What is a Family?
Tuesday November 13th
Grade: 1/2 Lesson Title: Different Types of Families Lesson Duration (mins): 30 minutes
Overview of lesson
Throughout this lesson the students will begin to learn about families. While doing so, the students will learn that there
are many different types of families and that no two families are the same, but that is okay because that is what helps
make each persons family so unique and special to them. I will be reading a book to the student’s that showcases a
variety of different types of families. Following the reading, I will be asking the students to tell me some of the types of
families they heard/saw in the book. I will write these, and any others they come up with, on a sheet of paper or the
white board. Following this we will be having a group discussion about how families are different and how that is okay.
To end this discussion, the students will receive time at the end of class to draw a picture of their families. This will help
the students visualize the many different families that are just within their classroom. I will begin this by having an
example picture of my family that I drew to model what the students are to do.

Learning Resources
Lesson Procedures
Introduction ( 2 min.):
To Begin:
Ask the students to please come sit on the carpet quickly and quietly.
Once all students are settled, tell them about how today “we are going to be learning about all the different
kinds of families.”
Tell the students how you are going to read them a book and afterwards we will have a discussion on it.

PSI Social Studies Grade One Fall 2018
Body ( 26 min.):
After reading the book, ask the students all the different types of families they heard from the book. Tell them you will
only be picking students who are sitting quietly with their hands up.
- write these down on the white board, or on a big post it note.
Ask the students if there are any other types of families that they can think of that might not of been in the book?
- write these answers down on the white board
- If they are stuck, over suggestions such as:
Single mom, single dad, only child, multiple children, two moms, two dads, big families, little families, etc.
Afterwards, tell the students how everyone family is different, no two families are going to be exactly the same. Give an
example of this from the class. Ask a student to share how many people there are in their family (pick a student who is
quiet with their hand up)
- After the student shares their family, I will share how my family is different from that student’s family as an
example.
Explain that it is okay that no one family is the same, because that’s what makes everyone’s family so unique and special
to them!
I will then tell the students that they will be drawing a picture of their families. I will start this by showing them a drawing
I did of my family, so that they know what I am looking for.
I will then hand out a blank sheet of paper to each student and explain that on my signal they will draw their family. This
must include how many members are in their family (ie- mom, dad, me and my sister and my dog) and any pets they may
have! Make sure to add color to your pictures as well!
Closure ( 2 min.):
Have the student’s hand in their drawings to me and have them clean up their area.
Tell the students to wait until further instructions from Mrs. Wolter’s.
(AFTER CLASS – if there is space on the wall somewhere, hang up an “All families are different but special” and
then hang the student’s drawings of their families up on the wall. Leave this wall up for the rest of the family unit.)
