COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is intended to provide the basic theory, principles and practice of power system protection and stability.
Techniques to analyze a power system under various fault conditions will be covered. Different relaying schemes will be
discussed for overcurrent, differential and distance protections. The applications of these relays will be explored in the
protection of distribution lines, transformers, bus bars, rotating electrical machines, power capacitors and transmission lines.
Different issues related to the stability of power systems, following a fault, will be discussed. Automatic generation control
in the context of load-frequency control will be introduced, if time permits.

COURSE PREREQUISITE(S)
• EE353 • Electrical Power System

Course Learning Outcomes

CLO1: • Analysis of a power system under all possible fault scenarios and determine the appropriate ratings of
circuit breakers to clear those faults.
CLO2: • Determination of the role of current and voltage transformers in power system protection.
CLO3: • Application of non-directional and directional overcurrent relays, definite time overcurrent and inverse
definite minimum time overcurrent relays.
CLO4:
• Application of differential relays in transformers, bus bar protections and stepped protection of
transmission lines.
Lahore University of Management Sciences
CLO5: • Application and Analysis of different protection schemes to electrical apparatus in industry and industrial
power plants.
CLO6:
• Analysis of the issues related to the stability of a power system after a fault.
