I. Warm-up
3 minutes

Read the following question and answer. What do you think of


this answer? Is it good or bad? Why?

Q: How would you describe your hometown?


A: Busy. Dirty. I don’t like it.

Hint: You can comment on this answer from the following


aspect: grammar, vocabulary, length, …

II. Exam Tips 4 minutes

Part 1 Speaking tests your ability to talk about everyday topics. It doesn’t
ask you to use complicated sentences, but you should pay attention to
four exam tips:

• Try to give long answers, not just two or three words. (length)
• Speak at a natural speed, not fast and not slow, and without too much

pauses. (pause)
• Use synonyms and a good range of vocabulary. (vocabulary)
• Practice your grammar to help you use the correct forms. (grammar)

So for the answer in warm-up part, we can comment in this way:


The vocabulary is appropriate for the topic, and the grammar is
correct. But, the answer is too short for part 1.

Use the table below to comment on his answer from the four exam
tips. Then, explain why you make these comments to your tutor.

Transcript:
Yes, I like the capital city. I like this very much. I live in the capital
city. I know it very well. It is in the north of my country. It is very
nice. It's got lots of business and lots of tourists. There’s a beach
in the city and you can see mountains. People shop in the city

and people work in the city. I like it because it's my hometown. It
is clean. It is modern. I like living there.

Sample comment:
Length: The answer is not too short.
Pause: There are some pauses in the answer.
Grammar: There are no grammatic errors in the answer.
Vocabulary: Some words are repeated, e.g. capital city, I like, people.

can spend one minute making some notes on the ideas
given below. Pay attention to the four exam tips we

• Location of your hometown and size.


• Positive words to describe a city, town or village.
• Places tourists visit.
• Your opinion and an example to support it.

TI: Give S one minute to prepare for the question. Then, listen to S’s
