DURING THE ENLIGHTENMENT

Each group will be given a section of the book that they will study, evaluate, and
present to the class. The sections are as follows:

 Group 1: 576-580 – stop at “Children and Education”

 Group 2: 580-585 – stop at “Popular Culture and Consumerism”
 Group 3: 585-596 – stop at “Religious Authority and Beliefs”
 Group 4: 596-601 – stop at “Medical Practices”
 Group 5: 601-605

You will be given one day of class time to work on the presentation. You will decide
how you will present the information to the class. Prepare a thorough presentation
since the material on these topics will be on the test. Do the best job that you can on
the presentation. These are easily earned points to improve your grade. Think
about what kind of a presentation you would want to learn from? A good place to
start with the presentation structure is the Focus Question at the beginning of each
section. It is what a reader is supposed to be able to answer by the end of the section.

You should prepare a presentation that should span a period of 8-12 minutes. Too
short, and you may not be going deep enough, too long, and I will have to cut you off
before you finish.

Things I will be looking for:

Covers the material Did the group correctly identify the important material
for their section, or just “kitchen sink” everything in the
reading?

Analysis of the material Did the group make connections to the period in which
their section occurs, or to the period immediately before
or after? (CONTEXT) Or, did they simply present the
material as written from the text?

Creativity of assignment: Is the presentation engaging? Are there aids for the
audience to understand the material? Does it feel like
one cohesive presentation, or 3-4 mini-presentations?

Presentation skills: Do the presenters exhibit good presentation skills?

Good eye-contact, volume, articulation and credibility
are critical for increasing a presentation’s utility.

 Have a backup plan in case a member is absent. It

always happens.
