Test #3

Name: __________________ Date: ___/___/_____ Score: _______

There are five Sections of the test including two essay questions at the end. Please follow
the directions and answer to the best of your ability.

In Section #1, circle True or False:

T/F—The Pythagorean Theorem triangle can only be used with right triangles.
T/F—You cannot tell whether the slope of a graph is negative/positive just by looking at
it.
T/F—The rate of change of a graph is the slope.
T/F—You can find the slope of a graph by using two points from the graph.
T/F—The Pythagorean Theorem equation 𝑎2 + 𝑏2 = 𝑐 2 solves for the missing angle of
the triangle.

In Section #2, circle the correct answer:

y = mx + b is the equation for any straight line. In this equation, what does b tell us about
the graph?
a. The slope
b. y-intercept
c. The range
d. x-intercept

What is the length of the third side of the triangle? (round to the nearest whole number)

4in

7in
a. 65in
b. 8in
c. 5in
d. 28in
Which is the correct graph of the equation y = 2x – 7:

a. c.

b. d.

What is the length of the length of the missing side?

12in

14in

a) 8in
b) 7in
c) 10in
d) 5in
Which could be the graph of an equation with a slope of -4:

a. c.

b. d.
In Section #3, write the letter of the term beside the correct definition:

a. Slope g. Graph
b. y-intercept h. Origin
c. x-intercept i. x-axis
d. Positive slope j. y-axis
e. Negative slope k. T-chart
f. Function l. Coordinate

Definitions:
_____ The place where the line crosses the x-axis.
_____ The point on the graph (0,0).
_____ When the graph of a function decreases from left to right.
_____ A relationship represented by variables which for each input there is only one
output.
_____ A set of two values that represent a point on the graph.
_____ The vertical axis on the graph.

In Section #4, solve the equation for y (hint: you want y on one side of the equals and
everything else on the other ex: y = ).
1. 2 + 3𝑦 = 9𝑥 − 4

2. 2𝑦 − 7 = 8𝑥

3. 4𝑥 − 𝑦 = 9
4. 5𝑦 + 4 = −15𝑥

1
5. 𝑦 + 1 = 3𝑥 − 2
2

In Section #5, use 4-5 complete sentences to answer the questions.

Question #1: Describe a real-world situation where you could use the Pythagorean
Theorem and describe how you would use it:
Question #2: Jim is solving an equation for y and graphing the results. He first does it on
paper and then checks his work with technology. He finds that his graph does not line up
with what the technology says. Is Jim’s equation and graph correct? If not explain what
he did wrong and how he needs to fix it.
Jim’s work:
6𝑦 − 1 = 4𝑥 + 2
(6𝑦 − 1) + 1 = (4𝑥 + 2) + 1
6𝑦 = 4𝑥 + 3
6𝑦 4𝑥
= +3
6 6
2
𝑦 = 𝑥+3
3

Using technology, he got:
