Planning differentiated
instruction that provides
opportunities for
supporting and extending
learning is one thing I
believe I am very good at.
I am not perfect, and
there will always be room
for improvement, but I try
really hard to plan in a
way that will successfully
support the diverse
learning needs in my
classroom. I base my
differentiated planning on
the comprehensive
information I am have
gathered and continue to
gather on my students. I
realize that if the content

is not relevant or
accessible to my students,
they will not care nor
learn.

I actively engage my
students in analyzing and
challenging our bias’,
stereotypes, and
assumptions. I think that
my active engagement is
one of the best rapport
building tools in my
teaching. I am white and I
come from a privileged
middle-class family. My
students are 98%
Hispanic or Latino and
they come from
generational cycles of
poverty. I realize that we
have bias’ and
assumptions, and my
open honesty and
engagement with my
students has built
rapport, challenged
stereotypes, and
facilitated powerful
discussion about
stereotypes in the
classroom.

I have continued to
practice planning
differentiated instruction
that provides systematic
opportunities for
supporting and extending
student learning based on
comprehensive
information on students.

My comprehensive
information on my
students has continued to
grow and develop
throughout the school
year and this has helped
me develop in this
category and more
appropriately tailor my
planning to support my
students needs.

I also actively engage

students in the analysis of
bias, stereotyping, and
assumptions. I think the
best way I have done this
is through the open
honesty and examination
of the biases that exist
between the students and
I. I fully admit to them
that I am a white female
who is trying to learn
more about their culture
and language norms. I
also challenge biases I
hear when I hear the
students call each other
stereotypical names that
are disparaging. This
open honesty and
challenging from a place
of love have helped me
build strong rapport and
have some really
powerful discussions with
my middle school
students about race,
stereotypes and biases in
and out of the classroom.

I plan differentiated
instruction that provides
systematic opportunities
for supporting and
extending student
learning based on
comprehensive
information I know about
my students. I know that
my SPED rotation of
students will need more
scaffolding and
differentiation than my
higher achieving student
rotation. I realize that
certain students in my
other rotations will need
me to chunk the
assignments more than
others. I take this all into
account as I plan my
lessons. 10.29.18

I continue to actively
engage my students in the
analysis of bias,
stereotyping, and
assumptions. Every year,
we actively engage in bias
and dialogue about the
different cultures
between my student’s and
I. We talk about
stereotypes and
assumptions and how
harmful they can be. I also
teach about assumptions
when I have the students
work on an activity where
they will not be successful
if they “assume” they

know what to do. They
have to carefully read
instructions and rely on
their partners to succeed.
This assignment works as
a platform from which we
can deeper dive into
assumptions and how
harmful they can be at
times. 10.29.18

students grow and

classroom. 5.10.18

I establish and articulate

learning goals to students
that integrate content
standards’ with students’
strengths, interests, and
learning needs. I do this
by daily reviewing our
learning goals and using
“I” statements. For
example, as I write this,
today our learning goal
was “I will compare and
contrast the change in
potential energy in
repelling and attracting
magnets by completing
the graphic organizer”.
This tells the students

Assessment started of as
a challenge for me, and
now it is a tool I wield
easier and more often,
because I have seen the

improving my teaching

improve in this category,
is to facilitate more

am going to intentionally

activities as I look ahead

My flexibility in the
classroom allows me to
make ongoing
adjustments to plans and
use a variety of materials
as the need arises to
support my students
learning. I do my best to
adjust my plans and
utilize materials that
support a learner-centric
classroom; I do not know
everything as the teacher,
I am only human. I also
try to build my students
self-efficacy and
advocating skills so they
can really “own” and take
responsibility for their
learning in the classroom.
I believe a learner-centric
classroom supports these
goals I have for my
students, and hence I
adjust my plans and
materials to reflect these
goals.

I find that I am constantly

making adjustments to
instructional plans to best
support my students’
learning. Flexibility in
planning is a key to being
a good teacher, in my
opinion. I use a variety of
materials to support my
students learning needs. I
do not think I have every

adapting it to meet my
students’ learning needs,
and to ensure that it
meets learning objectives
that I created that are
tailored to help students
achieve state and content
standards. Adjustments
and adaptations are
critical to support my
students to be successful.
5.10.18

I make ongoing
adjustments to
instructional plans
before, during, and after
lessons. I want to be the
best teacher I can be, and
in order for me to do that
I know that I must make
adjustments like this to
my plans to best serve my
students and advance
their learning. I also use
a variety of materials as
the instructional needs
arise to support my
students’ learning. I want
to make sure my
students’ enjoy learning
and the best way for them
to enjoy learning is to
have access to a variety of
materials that teach the
same concept so they feel
successful in their
learning. 10.29.18
