Nutritive Values of Fish Catla catla from Inland

Abstract: Abstract: The fish samples of Catla catla were collected from local markets of
Nellore city from January to December 2017. In the present investigation the nutritional
parameters of fish includes proteins, fats, moisture and ash contents were analyzed in powder
sample (dry sample). The average percentages of the proteins, fats, moisture and ash contents
were identified as 20.34±1.01, 1.69±0.29, 77.83±1.01, 1.0±0.09 respectively.

Introduction
Triglycerides which are present in the fish oil have some clinical applications and they can
minimize the blood glucose levels as supplemented in human diet (Boberg, 1990). Suganthi
et al., (2015) stated that three polyunsaturated compounds like EPA, DHA
(Eicosapentanaeoic acid, Docosahexaenoic acid and Ω-3 fatty acids) are much prominent
components for proper growth, which helps in preventing some cardiovascular problems in
children in particular coronary heart disease.

Ojewola and Annah (2006) stated that fish proteins used as alternative source in dietary
supplements to the pigs and leading to enhance their body weight as well as meat yielding
capacity. Limited research reports are available on nutritional value of fresh water fish
species Catla catla. Hence in this research work an effort was made to know the biochemical
components in fifteen different samples of the fish and the average values were recorded.

Materials and Methods


The collected samples were kept in icebox containing ice with a fish in the ratio of 1:2 and
brought to the laboratory. The collected samples were stored in -200C freezer until laboratory
analysis. Before starting the experimentation the freeze samples were taken out from the
freezer, after thawing, the samples were washed with distilled water and dissection was
performed by using clean stainless-steel knife. Head and viscera were removed and the flesh
in good condition was selected and make into tiny pieces (2/3g of the tissue was used for the
experimental analysis).

Moisture and ash estimation
Association of Official Agrichemicals, AOAC method (1990) adopted.

Estimation of Protein
Lowry et al., (1951) method was employed for the estimation of protein content.

Fat estimation
Bligh and Dyer method (1959) method was used for the estimation of fat content.

For the present experimentation the percentage (%) of moisture, proteins, fats and ash were
analyzed by adopting the following formulae.

For moisture
Moisture percentage (%) = (weight loses/original weight of the sample) × 100

For Proteins
Crude Protein (%) = percentage (%)of total amount of nitrogen× 6.25
N2 (%) (Titration-blank) × acid strength×100/5 × 100/ sample weight
Nitrogen values were multiplied with conventional factor 6.25 to find out the protein content
in the given sample.

Calculation of fat
Percentageof fat (%) = (extract weight/ sample weight) × 100

Calculation of ash
Ash (%) = ash weight/sample weight × 100

Data Interpretation
The experimental values were noted, and the mean and standard deviation values were
subjected to statistical analysis.

Results and Discussion


Nutritional status of the fresh water fish Catla catla, was investigated during the year 2017 in
fifteen different samples irrespective of their sexes and the observed values were tabulated
(Table 1).

Proteins
The observed average protein content of Catla catla in this study was 20.34±1.01.
Ravichandran et al., (2011) reported protein content in two fresh water fish species namely
Catla catla and O. mossambicus the values were ranged from19.72 to 22.84%. Maruf
Hossain Minar et al., (2012) reported 18.68±0.27% of protein in Hilsa fish (Tenualosa ilisha)
in laboratory conditions. Whereas in the studies of Osibona (2006) the protein content in C.
gariepinus was 19.64% Mridha et al., (2005) reported 19.74% of proteins in Cirrhinus reba.

Fats
The observed average fat content recorded in this study of Catla catla was 1.69±0.34, which
was nearer to the observations of Ravichandran et al., (2011), whose fat content was
observed as 1.2%. The estimated fat content in three different fishes namely Ophiocephalus
punctatus, Heteropneustes fossilis and Channa striatus were 0.64%, 1.08% and 1.23% in the
observations of Qudart-I-Khuda et al., (1962).

Moisture
The average moisture percentage recorded in this study was 77.83±1.01.The finding of the
study coincides with the observations of Ravichandran et al., (2011) in Catla catla. Ali et al.,
(2005) reported the moisture content in Labeo rohita, Catla catla, Cirrhinnus mrigala as
72.10, 68.84, 69.50 respectively.

Ash
The observed average ash content was 1.0±0.09. Devadsan et al., (1974) studied the ash
content in various fresh water fish species i.e. Catla catla, Labeo rohita, Cirrihinus cirrhosus,
Labeo calabasu, Mystus seenghala and Wallagu attu recoded as 1.31%, 0.93%, 1.40%,
1.02%, 0.91% and 0.72% respectively.

Conclusion
In the present investigation the proximate content of fresh water fish Catala catla have been
analysed with special emphasis on proteins, carbohydrate and fat content. In this context
future research work should focus on the nutritive parameters in fresh water fishes might be
useful to overcome malnutrition problems in India to some extent.
