WORKSHEETS No. 1
1. Environmental engineering
Environmental engineering is the branch of engineering that is
concerned with protecting people from the effects of adverse
environmental effects, such as pollution, as well as improving
environmental quality. Environmental engineers work to improve
recycling, waste disposal, public health, and water and air
pollution control.
2. Air pollutant
An air pollutant is a material in the air that can have adverse
effects on humans and the ecosystem. The substance can be
solid particles, liquid droplets, or gases. A pollutant can be of
natural origin or man-made.
3. Global warming
Global warming which is also referred to as climate change, is
the observed rise in the average temperature of
the Earth's climate system the global surface temperature is
likely to rise a further 0.3 to 1.7 °C in the lowest emissions
scenario, and 2.6 to 4.8 °C in the highest emissions scenario.
4. Greenhouse effect
The greenhouse effect is a natural process that warms the
Earth's surface. When the Sun's energy reaches the Earth's
atmosphere, some of it is reflected back to space and the rest is
absorbed and re-radiated by greenhouse gases.
5. Renewable resources
Renewable energy refers to the provision of energy via
renewable resources which are naturally replenished fast
enough as being used. It includes e.g. sunlight, wind, biomass,
rain, tides, waves and geothermal heat.
6. Non-renewable resource
A nonrenewable resource is a resource of economic value that
cannot be readily replaced by natural means on a level equal to
its consumption. Most fossil fuels, such as oil, natural gas and
coal are considered nonrenewable resources in that their use is
not sustainable because their formation takes billions of years.
II. Answer the following questions:
1. List three aspect of our natural world that environmental engineers are
working to care/or restore.
Air environment
Water environment
Land environment
4. Write down five major air pollutants and their chemical formula.
Carbon monoxide (CO)
Sulfur dioxide (SO2)
Nitrogen dioxide (NO2)
Volatile organic compounds (VOC)
Ozone (O3)
a. Renewable resources
