Centre on Public Law & Jurisprudence (CPLJ)

Dear Friends and Distinguished Colleagues,

Greetings from India!

We are pleased to announce that the Centre on Public Law and Jurisprudence (CPLJ) has
successfully completed its first year of operations. Our major inquiry in the first year involved
structural failures and delays in the Indian Courts. Our next two years promise vigorous
engagement with various issues including legal pluralism, ethical dimensions of law, post-
colonial rights discourse (with an International Conference in Sept. 2011), and critical
development law issues (with an International Workshop in Sept. 2012).

ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM THE CPLJ:

1. Our first year concentrated on structural failures and delays in the Indian Courts. Last week
Chief Justice Balakrishnan released our report "Justice without Delay" edited by Prof. Vik
Kanwar, with contributions from the academic staff of Jindal Global Law School and external
experts, including Professors Marc Galanter Jayanth Krishnan and Peter Schuck. The report
will be presented next week in comparative perspective at Osgoode Hall. Order a hard copy
for your library.

2. We also produced a special issue of the Jindal Global Law Review on "The Globalization of
Legal Knowledge." A complimentary copy is attached. Please forward this to your law
librarian, and recommend a subscription. The next issue (on Transformations of Asian Law)
is due in January 2011. Submissions may be directed to jglr@jgu.edu.in.

3. Our Year Two Project is “Public Law Dimensions of Legal Pluralism: State, Non-State and
Multi-State Justice Systems” (or more simply, the "Legal Pluralism Project"). Like this past
years Delays Project, the Legal Pluralism Project will make visible interventions in India and
internationally, organizing multiple events and publications.

4. CPLJ's academic head Prof. Vik Kanwar, in anticipation of our Year Two project (and the birth
of his second child) will be visiting the United States this Spring and available as a Visiting
Professor to a U.S. institution between Jan 15 and May 7th 2011. Prof. Kanwar is qualified to
teach diverse courses in public and international law, including two multi-jurisdictional
courses developed by the CPLJ:

· "International Law of Armed Conflict" This course is based on bridging U.S. and international
practice, introducing other forums and comparing enforcement systems.

· "Legal Pluralism: Non-State and Multi-state Justice Systems": This course surveys materials
in legal sociology and anthropology, and public international law. The core case studies will
involve India's struggle with informal justice and lethal violence.

If your institution is able to host a global scholar, or if these courses would add value to your
curriculum, please contact the Professor directly (vkanwar@jgu.edu.in). Model syllabi and
course materials are also available.

International Affairs (JSIA) in August 2011, and are currently seeking an inaugural faculty, on
admissions to the Masters degree programmes (MA in Diplomacy, Law and Business and MA
in Global Governance), recruitment of bright, highly qualified young PhDs as full-time faculty
members, including Faculty Directors (appointed as Executive Director or Assistant Director
based on experience in the field) for the following Research Centres:
