Thanks to Allah SWT who has given His bless to the writer for finishing the
English Paper asigment entitled “Active and Passive Voice”. The writer also wish
to express his deep and sincere gratitude for those who have guided in completing
this paper.
In arranging this paper, the writer trully get lots challenges and obstructions
but with help of many individuals, those obstructions could passed. Writer also
realized there are still many mistakes in process of writing this paper.
Because of that, the writer said thank you to all individuals who helps in the
process of writing this paper. Hopefully Allah SWT replies all helps and bless you
all. The writer realized that this paper still imperfect in arrangement and the
content. Then the writer hope the criticism from the readers can help the writer in
perfecting the next paper.

ACTIVE AND PASSIVE VOICE

A. Active voice

Active voice is a sentence that the subject is doing something or doing a job.
In Indonesian language lesson, the characteristics of active voice is the verb is
always beginning with "me-" and some start with "ber-". 1

Examples :

a. She calls me.

(Dia Memanggilku.)
b. He Killed a dog.
(Dia membunuh anjing.)

B. Passive Voice

Rules in passive voice:

 Subject in active voice changes position into object in a passive voice.

 Object in active voice changes position into subject in a passive voice.

 C. Conditions to Convert Active Voice into Passive Voice

1. Simple Present Tense

Subject + (is, am, are) + Past Participle

(V3)
Example :
A : She writes a letter.
Dia menulis surat
P : A letter is written by her.
Surat itu ditulis oleh dia.

2. Present Continuous Tense

Subject + have/has + been + Past Participle

Example :

A : He is closing the window.

Dia sedang menutup jendela
P : The window is being closed by him.
Jendela itu sedang ditutup olehnya.

3. Present Perfect Tense

Subject + have/has + been + Past Participle

Example :

A : They have played guitar.

Mereka telah bermain gitar.
P : The guitar has been played by them.
Gitar itu telah dimainkan oleh mereka.

4. Present Perfect Continuous Tense

Subject + have/has + been + being + Past Participle

Example :

A : George has been writing the lesson.

George sudah menulis pelajaran itu.
P : The lesson has been being written by George.
Pelajaran itu telah ditulis oleh George.

5. Simple Past Tense

Subject + was/were + Past Participle

Example :

A : Tracy opened the door.

Tracy membuka pintu itu.
P : The door were opened by Tracy.
Pintu itu dibuka oleh Tracy.

6. Past Continuous Tense

Subject + was/were + being + Past Participle

Example :

A : He was drinking some water.

Dia sedang meminum banyak air.
P : Some water was being drunk by him.
Banyak air sedang diminum oleh dia.

7. Past Perfect Tense

Subject + had been + Past Participle

Example :

A : He had written a letter.

Dia telah menulis surat.
P : A letter had been written by him.
Sebuah surat telah ditulis olehnya.

8. Past Perfect Continuous Tense

Subject + had been + being + Past Participle

Example :

A : He had been riding a motorcycle.

Dia telah sedang mengendarai sepeda motor.
P : A motorcycle had been being ridden by him.
Sebuah sepeda motor telah dikendarainya.

9. Simple Future Tense

Subject + will + be + Past Participle

Example :

A : My mother will make some cake.

Ibuku akan membuat beberapa kue.
P : Some cake will be make by my mother.
Beberapa kue akan dibuat oleh ibuku.

10. Future Continuous Tense

Subject + will + be + being + Past Participle

Example :

A : She will be playing the piano.

Dia akan sedang bermain piano.
P : The piano will be being played by her.
Piano itu akan dimainkan olehnya.

11. Future Perfect Tense

Subject + will + have been + Past Participle

Example :

A : They will have finished that.

Mereka akan sudah mengerjakan pekerjaan itu.
P : That work will have been finished by them.
Pekerjaan itu akan sudah diselesaikan oleh mereka.

12. Future Perfect Continuous Tense

Subject + will + have been + being + Past Participle

Example :

A : He will have been playing tennis.

Dia akan sudah sedang bermain tenis.
P : Tennis will have been being played by him.
Tenis akan sudah sedang dimainkan olehnya.

13. Future Past Tense

Subject + would + be + Past Participle

Example :

A : He would open the door.

Dia akan membuka pintu.
P : The door would be opened by him.
Pintu itu akan dibuka olehnya.

14. Future Past Continuous Tense

Subject + would + be + being + Past Participle

Example :

A : They would be playing tennis.

Mereka seharusnya bermain tenis.
P : Tennis would be being played by them.
Tenis seharusnya dimainkan oleh mereka.

15. Future Past Perfect Tense

Subject + would + have been + Past Participle

Example :

A : She would have finished that work.

Dia akan sudah melakukan pekerjaan ini.
P : That work would have been finished by her.
Pekerjaan itu akan sudah dikerjakan olehnya.

16. Future Past Perfect Continuous Tense

Subject + would + have been + being + Past Participle

Example :

A : He would have been painting the house.

Dia akan sudah sedang mengecat rumah itu.
P : The house would have been being painted by him.
Rumah itu akan sudah dicat olehnya.

17. When the subject in the active voice an unknown person or only mentioned in
general, for examples, people, someone, him, her, them, then if it becomes an
object in the passive voice can be eliminated.

Example :

a. A : People speak English well all over the world.

Orang-orang berbicara bahasa Inggris dengan baik di seluruh
dunia.
P : English is spoken well all over the world by people.
Bahasa Inggris dipergunakan dengan baik di seluruh dunia oleh
orang-orang.

English is spoken well all over the world.

Bahasa Inggris dipergunakan dengan baik di seluruh dunia.3

b. A : Someone stole my motorcar.

Seseorang mencuri sepeda motorku.
P : My motorcar was stolen by someone.
Motorku telah dicuri oleh seseorang.

My motorcar was stolen.

Motorku telah dicuri.4

18. Objects in passive voice must be written if the action is of course the person.
For examples, by George, by Billy.

Example :

A : Billy painted the door.

Billi mengecat pintu itu.
P : The door painted by Billy.
Pintu itu dicat oleh Billy.

19. If the active voice using Auxiliary Verb (Kata Kerja Bantu)

Subject + auxiliary + be + Past Participle

Example :

A : He can paint the house.

Dia dapat mengecat rumah itu.
P : The house can be painted by him.
Rumah itu dapat di cat olehnya.5
