Dear Dr. Bruce,

ENG 360 has given me an opportunity to refine my technical writing skills. By completing a
diverse assortment of writing assignments in this course I have mastered the six student learning
outcomes (SLOs) outlined in the syllabus. To exemplify my competence of these SLOs I have compiled a
portfolio of four writing assignments. This portfolio includes this cover letter, Team Zephyr’s group
charter, writer’s notebook entry #6, and my revised iFixit progress report.

This cover letter to an instructor shows my ability to conduct formal correspondence with the
intent of persuading her of my knowledge of the six SLOs. This letter is specifically crafted for Dr. Bruce,
demonstrating audience awareness and rhetorical focus (SLO 1). To convince you of my SLO mastery, I
will verify all claims with concrete evidence (SLO 3).

I selected my progress report for this portfolio because it demonstrates mastery of four SLOs
(SLO 1, 3, 4, 5). The properly formatted heading shows my awareness for my audience and my ability to
properly organize a formal report (SLO 1 and 4). My ability to properly organize this document is
demonstrated by the proper use of headings, sub-headings, and tables. The good grade I received on
this document indicates that I successfully persuaded Dr. Bruce that my team was on schedule (SLO 3).
The language and design used in this document demonstrates my ability to write a well-structured
memo style report (SLO 5). The language is concise, and the style lends itself to interpretation.

Writer’s notebook #6 provides an example of my ability to write with concision (SLO 5) in an


informal setting (SLO 1). The language used is succinct, to the point, and flows well. This writing sample
is a personal reflection on my writing process. I explore my use of outlines and meaningful language in
my writing.

The Team Charter from my team’s iFixit project was included because it demonstrates my ability
to cite ethically (SLO 2) and collaborate with others (SLO 6). I cite both text and web sources using MLA
citations which is consistent with the citing methods used in my field. This document was a group effort
that required teamwork and compromise.

The portfolio is displayed on my Weebly page. Except for the cover letter, my writing samples
are organized in chronological order. Upon reflection I realize how much this course has contributed to
the development of my writing skills. I have overcome the intimidation I once felt when presented with
writing tasks. I now have a skillset I can carry forward in pursuit of my MS degree and career.
