SUBJECT: MBA236 OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT

Trimester: II

Duration: 3.0 Hours / Week No of Credits: 3

Course Description

This is a core paper offered in second trimester of MBA degree. This course provides students, insights
related to Strategy, Planning, Manufacturing and Control aspects of Operations. It prepares students for
careers in the area of Planning, Production and Control functions in Manufacturing, as well as, in
Service sector. The concepts learnt in this field are applicable to all specializations including, Marketing,
Human Resources, Finance, Business Analytics, Lean Operations and Systems, and also in other fields.

Course Objectives

The course objective is to equip students with knowledge which prepares them for careers in the area of
Planning, Production and Control functions in Manufacturing, as well as, in Service sector.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the course students should be able to:

Knowledge

• Gain expertise in the concepts of Operations Management such as Inventory Management,


Project Management, Supply Chain Management, Total Quality Management for effective
utilization of resources and meeting customer expectations
• Develop Operations strategies to ensure manufacturing companies and service companies are
locally, regionally and globally competitive.

Skill
• Use Analytical skills in solving problems of Inventory Management, Project Management,
Supply Chain Management and Total Quality Management.
• Use Report Writing skills to make reports for Management.

Attitude

• Develop understanding of goals of other departments, overall goals of organization, and to align
operation department goals to suit organizational goals.

Pre-requisite

• Prior understanding of general management principles is a pre-requisite for this course.

Employability

This course teaches students about improving their skills & knowledge in the area of Operations
Management (OM) in production, as well as, in services sectors. Students learn about efficiency, as
well as effectiveness. Knowledge of OM can be applied to all specializations. Applied knowledge of
OM makes students more attractive to employers.

The course is facilitated by


1. Class lectures to drive the fundamental concepts of Operations Management.
2. Case study discussions to analyze the situation and to apply relevant concepts for problem
solving.
3. Student presentations, and class room discussions, on applications and use of concepts of
Operations Management in industry.
