The broad scopes of work for assessment of aging turbine foundation are as under

Review of documents:

1. Existing TG Foundation Design Calculations and Drawings (concrete outline, reinforcement

and embedment drawings).

2. Existing TG Foundation Dynamic Calculations Report. Vibration norms against which the
existing TG Foundation is designed for.

3. Geotechnical Investigations Report used for the design of existing TG Foundation.

4. Loading diagrams and equipment GA for the existing TG.

5. Year in which existing TG Foundation was designed along with corresponding wind and
earthquake loading standards used.

6. NDT /Semi-destructive tests results already carried out.

7. Loading diagrams, equipment GA, embedment details, vibrations norms, design criteria, etc.
for the new TG.

Testing and Analysis:

The existing concrete foundation shall be subjected to semi destructive and Non-destructive
testing for assessing the integrity and strength of concrete. We propose the following tests to be
carried out:

1. Visual inspection for cracks, bulging, change in dimension etc.

2. Field tests to be carried out are

a) Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Test on RC foundation at random to assess the strength /
quality of in-situ concrete.
b) Rebound Hammer Test on RC foundation at random to assess the strength / quality of
concrete
c) Half-Cell Potential measurement test to assess the status of corrosion in embedded
rebars in concrete members.
d) Carbonation test on concrete to assess the loss of alkalinity in concrete.
e) Extraction of core samples from foundation pedestals.
f) Capo-test on r c members to assess the in-situ strength of concrete.
g) Covermeter test on R C members at random to determine the cover provided to rebars.
h) Chloride penetration and Sulphate content test and determination of pH value on RC
members at random to assess the depth of carbonation, chloride and Sulphate concrete
in concrete.
i) Test for Potential Alkali Reactivity of Cement-Aggregate Combinations
j) Measurement of crack width in RC members

3. Lab tests to be carried out are Compressive strength and density

4. Detailed dynamic analyses to assess the dynamic behavior of the TG Foundation using the
properties arrived after field / laboratory tests and initial refurbishment scheme. Dynamic
analyses results will be checked as per OEM requirements. Dynamic analysis will be carried
out using FE program Ansys 14.2 with 3D solid elements
5. Carrying out detailed static analysis and design of TG foundation under the combined action
of various loads (short circuit, blade failure, bowed rotor, etc.) for the current strength of
materials as described in NDT report.
6. Based on the dynamic analysis, static analysis and design, suggest strengthening measures
if members do not meet the design requirement.
7. A detailed report along with recommendations for strengthening measures submitted
