Reflection (Comparing Hurricanes and

Tornadoes).

This is the fifth lesson of the Hend Alyammahi


Natural disasters’ unit. The
Lesson students must compare the Student
unit/page creation and effects of tornadoes teacher
and hurricanes within a Venn
diagram.

Overall aim and context of the lesson

The students will be able to compare hurricanes and tornadoes using their knowledge from pervious
lessons.

Where did the lesson take place? at the classroom.

What were you trying to achieve in your lesson?


In this lesson the students will use their knowledge from previous lesson, to compare hurricanes and
tornadoes.

What did the students do?


The students did drama activity to recap on the formation of hurricanes and tornadoes. Then, they
watched a video (comparison between hurricanes and tornadoes). After that they filled in a Venn
diagram to compare between the two disasters.
Analyze (A):
Why do you think the students responded the way that they did?
I think the students benefit from the drama activity at the beginning of the lesson. This showed me
that they understand the steps and memorized them by heart. Then, the video was really useful and
gave them general comparison. Moreover, by me modeling the Venn diagram on the board they got
the idea and what they have to do. Finally, they were more confident with the job when I send them
off to tables.

How well did your teaching relate to the students’ prior understanding?
When I built my lesson plan, I aimed to start the lesson with a revision of what we did in the last two
lesson. Then I chose a video that summarizes the key differences and similarities. This will help the
students to have general idea and to connect their prior knowledge together.

How well did you engage the students?


The starter activity was very motivated to the students and useful as a recap. The video was simple
and clear. The worksheets were differentiated and appropriate to each level.

Explain the nature of the experience from the students’ perspective


All the students liked the drama activity and they worked very hard on their performance to compete
with other groups. They are used to the Venn diagram, so their self-esteem increased while they were
working.

Did your lesson meet your teaching goals?


My teaching goal from last lesson was to write clear learning objectives as suggested by my MCT. My
learning objective was clear and included what they students had to do and how. Also, my it was
approved by my MST.
Transform (T):
How might you enhance student learning of this lesson in the future?
In the future it would be great to take the students to the library, so they can conduct the research
themselves. Or even I could bring them books about both disaster and they can search though them.

What are the implications for your professional practice?


After achieving my goal with LO. I think will move to work on my confidences and to be able to assign
teacher assistant to help me.
