MOBILE CRANE’S SPREADER (MATS) DESIGN

1. Introduction

The purpose of this report is the design for the spreaders (crane's mats) of
the mobile crane with capacity 40 tons which will be working at the
Site. The design ensure the crane stability and taking into
account the ground conditions. More specifically has designed an
integrated arrangement for the crane’s outriggers whitch made up from
sleepers with cross section dimensions 300x300 mm. In overall procedure of
the design followed faithful the CIRIA REPORT C703, BS 5975 and other
associated standards.

2. Soil data
The site is located in Church Crookham along The
development site (Fig.1) has an area of 1.67 Hectares (4.12 acres).

Furthermore, C.B.R tests from the M & H Testing Limited for the soil's surface
mechanical properties took place at the scheduled crane’s positions and
gave minimum:

C.B.R  8 0 0 (1)
And consequently the soil stress bearing capacity qult is equal to

qult  70  C.B.R / S .O.F  70  8 / 3  186.66 KPa (2)

The above correlation between the CBR and the ultimate bearing-capacity
developed by Black (1962).

3. Crane Types

In accordance to lift plan, predicted to use the following types of mobily

cranes:

A) TEREX, AC40/2L with 40 tons capacity

B) LIEBHERR, LMT 1030-2.1 with 35 tons capacity

4. Properties of timber sleepers

Cross Section size: 300x300 mm

Therefore
The moment of the section Z is equal to:

b  d 2 300  3002
Z   4.5  106 mm3 (3)
6 6
The permissible stresses derived from BS 5268 and BS 5975:
Assumptions: - Timber strength class C27
- Dry exposure (sleepers have normally been treated with
creosote or other treatment method which will tend to repel
moisture)
- Short duration loading (equivalent to ‘dead + imposed + snow
+ 15 second wind gust’ in BS 5268
- Stresses in N / mm 2
Bending Shear
(f) (q) Bearing
BS 5268
Grade Stress 7.60 1.10 2.50
K2-Moisture 0.80 0.90 0.90

Therefore the Moment of resistance of the cross section ( M R ) is equal to:

M R  f  Z  10.03  4.5  106  106  45.14 KNm (4)

And permissible shear force ( QR ) equal to:
QR  q  A  2.45  300  300  103  220.5 KNm (5)

MOBILE CRANE’S SPREADER (MATS) DESIGN
5. Sleeper mat design for mobile crane (40 tons)

We examined the crane TEREX, AC40/2L with 40 tons capacity because it is

the worst load case scenario. The size of outriggers pads cycle with diameter =
400 mm and the maximum outrigger load as recommended from (DIN 15019-
teil 1 und teil 2 and from ISO 4305-2014) is equal to:

40 Ton x 1.10 = 44 tns = 440 KN

Consequently the requirement size of Area of mat Areq with S.O.F=3 from

Equation (2) is equal to:

 440 KN  2
Areq     440 /186.66  2.35 m (6)
 qult 
And eventually this area chosen to be square with the dimensions 1800x1800
2
mm = 3.24 m as minimum and as shown at the following Figure 3.

Fig 3.

10
MOBILE CRANE’S SPREADER (MATS) DESIGN
For the upper layer (Fig 4.): we have 2 no sleepers under the outrigger pad and
that gives bearing stress under the outrigger (  p1 ) pad equal to:

FIG 4.

N crane 440  4 1000

 p1  2
 2
 3.5 N / mm 2  4.46 N / mm 2 (7)
 D 3.14  400
4

And the Load per sleeper = 440/2 = 220 KN

This means that the sleeper’s cross section maximum moment (Mmax) is:
PL 220
M max   L  D   1.80  0.40   38.50 KNm  M R  45.14 KNm (8)
8 8
And the Qmax is:

P  L  D  220  1.80  0.40 

Q max       85.55 KN  QR  220.50 KN (9)
L  2  1.80  2 

11
MOBILE CRANE’S SPREADER (MATS) DESIGN
For the lower layer (Fig 5.): we have 6 no sleepers under the sleepers from
upper layer that gives bearing stress less than on upper sleepers.

Consequently the Load per sleeper = 440/6 = 73.3 KN

Fig 5.
This means that the sleeper’s cross section maximum moment (Mmax) is:

PL 73.33
M max   L  D   1.80  0.60   10.99 KNm  M R  45.14 KNm (10)
8 8

And the Qmax is:

P  L  D  73.33  1.80  0.60 

Q max       24.44 KN  QR  220.50 KN (11)
L  2  1.80  2 

From the above analysis we can conclude that the proposed dimensioning
and arrangement of the sleepers mat:
Upper Layer 2 no @ 1800 mm long
Lower Layer 6 no @ 1800 mm long
Is satisfactory.

12
MOBILE CRANE’S SPREADER (MATS) DESIGN

Summary
The above design is satisfactory and compliance with the relatives Eurocodes
and the BS.
The proposed dimensioning and arrangement of the sleepers mat is
For Upper Layer 2 no @ 1800 mm long
And for Lower Layer 6 no @ 1800 mm long
The sleepers should placed carefully and tightly side by side and well bedded
on the flatted ground.
