The Blower`s Daughter Analysis

General
Tempo: 65-67 bpm
Style: Ballad
Instrumentation: Vocals, Steel Acoustic Guitar 1, Cello, Bass, Steel Acoustic Guitar 2, Electric
Guitar, Back-up vocals.
Key: E major. Modulates to F# major from bridge to ending.
Time signature: 4/4
Outstanding Features: One of the main features of this song is that it sounds personal, not
massively produced of altered by digital tools. This is achieved by the usage of sometimes out
of pitch vocals, as well as using steel acoustic guitar as main harmonic instrument. This dotes
the song of a human character. It is also notable that only one cello seems to accompany the
song, providing melodic lines throughout the entire piece.

Melody
Ending: Open ending by lyrics “ ‘Till I find someone new”, does not end in the root note.

Lyrics
Type of Lyrics: Love song, personal point of view. Written as If it was sung directly to someone
present.
Quality of emotion: Not entirely sad, the song is rather melancholic.
Rhyme scheme:
Verse: ABBC ADDC
Chorus: E
Verse: ABBC AFFC
Chorus: E
Bridge: EEG
Chorus: E

Figurative Language: The song is written in colloquial language, works as a conversation but at
no point the lyrics become metaphoric or hide a deeper meaning. The lyrics are then written as
if speaking to somebody that will understand them, due to past interactions and conversations
had between both participants. However, the lyrics work beyond its initial precursors mainly
because the subjects treated are common in human condition, are likely to appear in numerous
human conversations.
Harmony and Arrangement
Chord Progression: The chords move as it follows
Verse: I-IV-V-IV-vi
Chorus: IV-iii-ii-I-IV-V-IV-V-I
Verse, Chorus (Same as before)
Bridge (Modulation to F#): I-IV-ii-V-vi
Chorus: Same as before, taking the modulation.
Harmonic Moves:
Memorable music moves: It is interesting that the chorus repeats the same rhyme
continuously. Varying it only for the last one. During said chorus the melody is shared between
voice and cello. The bridge is made by the usage of backup singers in a higher pitch than the
rest of the song, leading to a 3rd and final chorus, whether it is effective is up for debate.
Personally, I would continue with the main vocals at least being part of the bridge, instead of
completely dropping during it.

Structure
The song structure goes as follows: Verse, Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Verse, Bridge, Chorus, Fade
out.
By the end of the second chorus the song modulates up a whole tone to F#. It is also notable
that the second and third chorus are less energetic when in comparison with either the verse or
bridge that precedes them. Working as waves that never really crash. The cello increases both
in range and presence throughout the song, alike the instrumentation that also gradually
becomes fuller and fuller. Adding second and third guitar, as well as backup voices.

What to use

The main element that need to be translated from the song is its human character, the usage of
out of pitch vocals, as well as simple instruments in addition with personal lyrics that deal with
subjects that seem unique to the person that writes the song and that for whose it is. Building
on this, the lyrics should be written as if spoken directly to someone, as if the whole song was
meant for only one person to hear it.

A leit motif might be proper, as mimicking the idea carried by the cello in the song. It might add
to the structure to the song itself. Carrying better the message.
